Web Seminar: Engaging Employees Across Generations
Denise Fields, HR Program Manager, FINRA
December 13, 2018
Launching A Generations-Focused Employee Resource Group (ERG)• Our Challenge/Opportunity …..
– Challenge/Opportunity: With five generations in FINRA’s workforce, we recognized generational differences can create communication barriers and other workplace concerns.
• Our Solution …..– Solution: A new multigenerational ERG was launched to break down
generational silos and facilitate cross-generation teamwork and collaboration.
• Our Results …..– Results: Although just recently launched the summer of 2018, the
ERG has established its brand, developed a business plan with clear goals and objectives, is trusted in the organization as a valuable and knowledgeable resource, and enrolled almost 300 members since its launch date.
Things to Consider When Launching a Generations-Focused ERG• Things to Consider:
– ERG Structure and Support• Does my organization have the support, funding, need and established structure?
– Standalone ERG or Multigenerational Approach• Should my organization establish a multigenerational ERG or separate ERGs based
on each generation? What challenges will be better managed and/or solved with the creation of the group?
• Have you established a benchmark against other organizations that have done well in this arena to understand lessons learned and success along the journey?
– Goals and Business Impacts• What goals and objectives will this ERG help accomplish?• What does success look like in the organization?
The FINRA Multigenerational Employee Resource Group Exchange (MERGE)
• Our Solution….– The FINRA Multigenerational Employee Resource Group Exchange
(MERGE)• Kickoff: Senior panel with executives across the organization and live-streamed
throughout the organization.• Structure: Executive Champion and at least one (1) Management Committee from
each generation.• Feedback: Support, feedback and employee attendance has been very satisfactory.• Immediate Business Impacts: Allows for cross generational interaction,
understanding and better awareness of similarities and differences between groups, and further shows the organization’s inclusion efforts.
– Types of Programs: • Outreach/Recruitment• Education and Awareness• Professional Development
