Hello Everyone,
Daylight savings is over. No denying that Winter is on its way now boo
hiss. The upside though is the kids go to bed so much easier with the sky
being dark!!
TTT Horse Trials entries need to be in to me by 17th of April at the latest,
so if you are looking at joining a team please get them in sooner rather
than later. Send them to megstaf@iprimus.com.au or 70 Harberts Road
Don Valley 3139.
Well, we have bought a new Show jump trailer!! I’m sure you have all
walked past our current trailer and wondered what the hell was keeping
the sides from falling off. It was beyond repair, so it has been replaced by
a newer, shinier version. A member of your committee is travelling up to
NSW to pick it up this Wednesday, so it will be there at the next rally for
you to all check out.
I sent out the question via email and in the last newsletter why people are
not attending rallies. I have had a rather dismal response which is a
shame. Remember – if we don’t know what’s wrong, we can’t fix it!! The
answers so far consist of cost/ lack of funds (x2), lame horse (x2), compe-
titions conflicting (x2), too busy (x3), prefer private lessons (x1).
Does anyone else have anything to add? 10 responses out of 58 is pretty
slack just quietly!!
As mentioned in the last newsletter we are looking at holding a competi-
tion later in the year (Aug/Sept time). We are proposing a show and a
freshman’s show jump competition. As soon as more information comes
to hand, we will pass it on to you.
From my front, Andy has been plugging away quietly. We have mainly
been doing EA stuff, but did a comp at Neerim on the weekend. He did
well in one test, but we retired in the second after he had a meltdown
about a kid twanging the fence wire next to the arena. I feel more de-
sensitizing coming on (either that or a swift slap to a stranger’s child!!).
In the meantime,
I hope you have all had a very HAPPY EASTER, and are quietly eating
through a mountain of chocolate!!

Rally Day
1st April 2012
A Lesson with Caroline Coleby…… ….by Sharyn Symonds Sit Trot……without stirrups……did I hear that prop-erly??? Well many of you know I haven’t been to club for a while and after today’s effort I may not be able to walk tomorrow but they do say no pain, no gain!! And even though the instructor was quite tough and didn’t suffer fools lightly I actually learnt quite a lot!!! I was quite looking forward to club and it was proba-bly the fact that I had a new four legged friend to take along by the name of Flash. Flash is a Clyde/WB/TB cross and hasn’t done a lot of work of late so when the schedule came out and I saw that I was having a private lesson with Caroline I did wonder how Flash & I would cope with an intense hour with Caroline. I had heard on the grapevine that Caroline is a great instructor but she can be quite tough. Lucky for me Meg Stafford decided to join me which gave me some breathing space as Caroline worked with Meg and Andy. Transitions were the flavour of the lesson and we worked on transitions and making them
from engaging the abdominal muscles instead of kicking, flapping or however else you get your horse to trot and then making the down-ward transition in the same way. We basically had to leave their heads alone and ride from our core. So being the hard task master that Caroline is she made us ride on the buckle so that we have no choice but to stop and go by engaging muscles. It is quite amazing that when you actually get it right how little effort it takes as a rider to make your horse trot or canter.

Rally Day
1st April 2012
I have only had flash for 1 week and every time I rode him I always felt that I worked harder than he did so for me learning this was a great tool in getting him to move forward. Just when I was starting to get the hang of engaging muscles that haven’t been used in a while Caroline yells out “ok you girls I want you to cross your stirrups”……….I am thinking “oh what”, did I hear that right……bugger me this is my 7th ride on this horse and I kinda like having pedals!!! For fear of being yelled at I lose my pedals and suck it up and get on with the job. More transitions and this time sit trot. Sit trot is not a very strong point and Caroline picked up on this and gave me a really handy tool to help develop the sit trot. In the past I would have sat a few strides and then when it got all awkward and out of sync I would have risen a few strides and then gone back to sitting. Instead of doing it that way, Caro-line had me sit a few strides and then do a transition to walk and then after 2 strides of walk go back to trot……this way you not only get time to reorganise once your balance is out of whack but you also practice another transition (something that Caroline is very big on!!!) well what can I say…..it worked a treat and by the end of the lesson I was sit trotting nearly the whole perimeter of the arena……something that I have not been able to do be-fore today without bouncing and getting tense and gripping. The other highlight for me was the beautiful drawing that Mary Newham had done whilst I was deep in concentration trying to master those transitions and the sit trot. It is just beautiful. Mary comes to club often to sketch and her work is amazing!!! What is even bet-ter still is the fact that she shaved about 10kgs off me!!! Well what can I say……it was good to be back at club and I enjoyed every minute even though it was hard work, but no pain no gain!!! See you all next month and in the meantime cross your stirrups even if it’s for 5 minutes, it does make a huge difference!!!

No thoroughbreds, please… Dear All,
After thirteen wonderful years with my beautiful TB girl,
I'm looking for something else…a very quiet gelding! Not too big (15 to 16 hh)
and not too old (8 years and under) with good movement and an impeccable tem-
perament. I currently ride HRCAV Level 3 and although I will mostly focus on dres-sage, I would like to think my jumping days are not entirely over.
If you could please forward this to anyone who has anything to do with horses, I would very much appreciate it. I figure someone somewhere must know the right
horse…
Many thanks!!!
