What It’s All AboutAlan S. ChartockWAMC President and C.E.O.
Wow, there are some days that the first hour of The Roundtable gets almost too hot to handle. As you know, we try to keep things moving, switch out the people on the panel, and read e-mails so that everyone can have a say.
Of course, there are always problems. Some people just can’t handle what one of the panelists has to say about a particular subject and even though three others on the panel hold the opposite view, the letter writer says things like, “Since you allowed her or him to say what she did, I will never again listen to or support WAMC.” Then there are a few name callers. They use words like Nazi when in fact their own inability to let others express a point of view is closer to the very model they are objecting to. It’s also incredibly frustrating when the writer claims that someone on the panel said something that, in fact, they never said. Once in a while, someone takes us to task for not addressing a particular subject, just like the rest of the news media. I always wonder just how that person heard about the subject. When someone says that on Vox Pop, I will ask how they

Well, WAMC’ers, even though the dog days of August are upon us, it doesn’t mean we can’t have some outdoor fun. We have nine more live Tanglewood broadcasts, and they are not to be missed.
Personally, when I can’t make it to Lenox, MA --which is something that should be done at least once a summer -- I love to have the broadcast on at home and prepare an outdoor picnic for my sweetie and I. Of course, the cat and dog join us, too. Below you’ll find some of the highlights for the rest of the season.
On Saturday, Aug 1 at 8:30PM, the amazing pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet will take to the stage with a Beethoven and Shostakovich program. Now if you haven’t heard Thibaudet play, Google him, people! You’ll be so enchanted, the next thing you know your playlist will be filled with his work. Then to make it a double-whammy, the Sunday 2:30PM concert features the incomparable Yo-Yo Ma. I know many of you will be there in person thanks to the Fund Drive, and will enjoy the Haydn, Dean and Strauss selections throughout the afternoon.
We have the perennial Tanglewood on Parade performance on Tuesday, Aug. 4 at 8PM. It’s starting a half-hour early and we will have a pre-show with interviews. This performance will feature conductors Stéphane Denève, Keith Lockhart, and Andris Nelson appearing together.Always a highlight of the season, the day includes a wealth of afternoon activities and ends with the

heard about it, since ostensibly nobody is covering it. Usually you get them cold on that one.
We have established rules so that everyone gets a chance. We ask people to write very short letters. That way we can get more letters into the queue. We all know that it is possible to get the nut of your thought into a paragraph – former President Dwight D. Eisenhower reportedly used to insist that it all be committed to a single paragraph. It can certainly be done.
So the plea here is to understand what the program is supposed to be. The first hour was designed to be a bridge between what people have just heard on the combined WAMC/NPR Morning Edition and Joe Donahue’s wonderful work on the other two hours of the show. I love hearing what everyone thinks about the Greek debt crisis or the Iran nuclear problem. We have a lot of very bright people listening to WAMC and quite frequently they offer insights that make me think. Often, people will mull over a previous story and then write a letter even though we are on to the next segment of the show.
We know it is succeeding because we get hundreds of letters saying that The Roundtable is their favorite program. People can disagree with what they have heard but they still provide affirmative feedback about the show. Naturally that makes us feel very good because that is what it’s all about.
Much of what I have said also applies to Vox Pop, especially when we are discussing political subjects on a Tuesday. I sometimes get letters asking why I don’t give people more time to express their beliefs and pet theories. Same answer -- I really do want to give everyone a chance to have their say. It’s obviously a very popular program. The whole idea is to have people give their views without monopolizing the full hour. Our Medical Monday show is very popular but some folks want more than they can possibly get. Put yourself in my place. Someone calls and says the same thing two or three times. When I hear it coming around yet another time, I figure it’s time to shut it all down. My colleague Ray Graf does Wednesdays, Thursday and Fridays and is particularly adept at managing the calls. In each case, Ray has a guest to explain things and he is really good at keeping things moving and in motivating the guest to keep it short. So let me thank you all for your positive feedback and for all you do to move the shows along.

Should You “Pull Back” From a Bull Market?Provided by RBC Wealth Management and Thomas E. Brockley
In early 2015, the current bull market hit a milestone when it became the fourth-longest run-up since World War II. But such a long-running rally presents investors with a dilemma: Should they stay invested and hope for more profits, or cash out to “lock in” gains?
That isn’t an easy question to answer — and it’s especially hard this time around, when the investment gains have been so substantial. Consider this: The Standard & Poor’s 500 index has more than tripled since it bottomed out in early March of 2009, which means that a $10,000 investment at that point would now be worth more than $25,000. So, if you owned an equity portfolio that mimicked the S & P 500 during that period of time, or even just held a diverse group of stocks, you probably did pretty well over the past six years.
Furthermore, the key factors that have contributed to this bull market — low interest rates, low inflation and generally strong corporate earnings — are still at play. But change appears to be on the horizon. Although economic growth has been slower than anticipated in recent months, expectations are that it will again speed up, allowing the Federal Reserve to raise short-term interest rates later this year. Uncertainty over the timing of this rate has been unsettling for both stocks and bonds.
Given the sheer length of the bull market, it’s not surprising that some analysts think we are overdue for a “correction” (a 10 percent decline in the market over a relatively short period of time). Yet, it’s almost impossible for anyone — even the so-called market “experts” —to predict when it will happen. And since that’s the case, you’re better off not worrying about when, or if, you should pull back from the market to consolidate your gains. Instead of trying to “time” the market, ask yourself some basic questions:
• Am I properly diversified? You can’t control the external events that affect investment prices — but you have total control over your own portfolio. And the best way to position your portfolio for all markets is to ensure that it’s properly diversified. At any given period, stocks may be moving up while bonds are down — or vice versa. If you only owned stocks, and the stock market stumbles, you will likely face big losses. But if you spread your investment dollars among domestic and international stocks, different types of mutual funds, corporate, municipal or government bonds and other vehicles, you can reduce the impact of volatility on your holdings and give yourself more chance of success.
• Am I taking on too much risk — or too little? If you consistently become frustrated by short-term declines in the financial markets — and the accompanying results on your investment statements — you might be taking on more risk than the amount with which you’re comfortable. If that’s the case, it may make sense for you to shift part of your portfolio from growth-oriented stocks to other vehicles, such as bonds or slower-growing, dividend-paying stocks. This move may provide you with some peace of mind, but you will also have to accept that your overall returns are likely to be lower. Conversely, if you are unsatisfied with your portfolio’s performance, and you know that you need more growth to achieve your long-term goals, you might need to shift some assets from more conservative investments into more aggressive ones. Ultimately, you need to balance your risk tolerance with your hoped-for returns.
It’s a good idea to ask these two questions in any economic environment. In doing so, you keep your focus on the “basics,” such as diversifying your holdings, being aware of your risk tolerance, owning quality investments, and so on. This way you can continue making progress toward your long-term goals — in up, down and “sideways” markets.
