EUROPEAN SUPERCHANNEL LAUNCH FRENCH TV PROGRAMMINGSERIOUS RIVAL TO SKY CHANNEL MORE ON MUSIC AND CLIPS
by Peter Jones and Nick Robertshaw
Britain's 16 commercial TV compa-nies have decided in principle togo ahead with plans for an
entertainment -led European Su-
perchannel in competition toRupert Murdoch's Sky Channel, which recently reported losses of8.6 million pounds for the year toJuly 1985.
The decision has yet to be en-dorsed by the board of directors ofeach company, but the Indepen-dent TV Contractors' Associationsays it will be 'very disappointed' ifall 16 do not participate in the ven-ture, which is expected to cost
around 20 million pounds. The scheme was devised fol-

This Disco/Dance section will be on page 6 next to the New Talentpop/rock section. Eurotipsheet will also feature in detail some Hot 12inches which are recommendable for programming and are about tobe released in Europe. Wnergikertekwy we print telephone numbersas well, in order to make our service as complete as possible.
MALIBU PROMO ON CREOLE TOURby Peter Jones and Nick Robertshaw
Kid Creole and the Coconuts' self-styled 'tropical blend' and Malibu'stropical coconut drink: it soundslike a sponsorship marriage madein heaven, and so it proved duringthe group's European tour thissummer, which played to packed
houses in ten countries. For other would-be sponsors
it's going to be a hard act to follow.Instead of just having a name onthe programme, Malibu's productwas built into the actual stage set, with a real Malibu bar complete

the UK chart last wee t the high position ofno. 9 is also receiving good airpla , as isDavid Grant & Jaki Graham's lastweek's Hot Radio Add. The greatest suprise inthis week's chart is the new entry by Wham!(I'm Your Man) straight in at no. 2. Climbingfast are Dionne & Friends (19-33):, the newLionel Richie:, Say You Say Me (14-34) andDee C Lee's See The Day (18-38).

GERMANYStarship's We Built This City is picking up verygood airplay as is local singer Sandra with thefollow-up to Magdalena, In The Heat Of TheNight. The newly released Fine Young Can-nibals' Blue is bubbling under (what a greatsingle, by the wa)together with BlackFoeoess' Bye Bye Love. Although TheGerman Top 3 remains static, several singlesare rushing up the which El-ton John's Nikita (5- ock Robin's WhenYour Heart Is Weak (18-35) and ColonelAbrams' Trappe 2-48). New entries thisweek for Two Of lack Foeoess and KateBush with Cloud usting.
FRANCEVery little change airplay -wise in France thisweek, though Jean -Jacques Lafon's Le GeantDe Papier and Pierre Bachelet's LAn DeuxMille Un are both picking up well. Century
tops the charts yet again with Loverwhile Madonna has risen two notches toreach second position with Groove. Fastmovers include Jm-Jacques Goldman's JeTe Donne (11-1Stevie Wonder (15-25):,with A -Ha (28-51) rising dramatically.
BENELUXSimple Minds are again topping the Benecharts, followed by Sandra and Grace Joboth having risen one place each. Followingthe pattern throughout most of Europe, thefastest climbers are Elton John (8-21):, Di-onne Warwick (17-40) and Lionel Richie(21-47) with UB 40's Don't Break My Heart(25-52) also doing well in the Benelux.
Airplay -wise, Grace Jones is best playedsingle in Holland this week, followed by theever -more popular Cloudbusting by KateBush. Other strong airplay for Dire Straits'Walk Of Life:, Madonna's Dress You Up andlocal teeny band Roberto Jacketti's So I Say.
ITALYSimple Minds has replaced Madonna fromthe no. 1 spot in the Italian charts. She is nowin 2nd place, followed by Arcadia rising to no.3. There are 2 dramatic increases for Kingwith Alone Without You (6-28) (in the UK theTaste Of Your Tears single is faring well) andMadonna's Gambler (10-32):, while other clim-bers include Propaganda and Matt Bianco.
SWITZERLANDWith A -Ha still on top and other Euro-productions following it (Cheri at 2, RoundOne's In Zaire at 6, Falco at 8 and JenniferRush's Destiny at 10) it is more than clear thatEuro-records dominate the Swiss charts.Highest new entry for Elton John's Nikita andArcadia is new at 21.
AUSTRIANo change this week in the Austrian Top 3, butseveral new entries: Round One (In Zaire):,Bad Boys Blue (Pretty Young Girl) and MidgeU re. Tina Turneris a popular choice with 2 sin-gles in the charts at the moment, her Heroand new in at 24, One Of The Living.
Airplay -wise Kool & the Gang have bestplayed single with Cherish and increased air-play for Dire Straits' Money For Nothing andMatt Bianco's Yeh Yeh.
SPAINThe Spanish top 10 is almost completely takenby non -Spanish artists; with Stevie, Tina andMadonnaon top, and the rest of the top 10filled by either European or American artists, the position of Sergio Y Estibaliz at 9 is arather lonely one.
DENMARKThe Top 3 in the Danish charts again featurethe two African -Aid charity singles, both by lo-cal artists and both called Afrika. Highest en-tries this week for A -Ha in at 12, Katrina & TheWaves's Que Te Quiero (14):, Belouis Some'sImagination (25) and the new Paul HardcastleJust For Money (26).
SWEDENLocal product Tone Norum's Can't You taya likely contender for the no. 1 spot in the nearfuture, having risen to no. 2 from 15. There ishowever strong competition, with ModernTalking's Cheri Cheri Lady climbing steadily(6-9) and A -Ha leaping to no. 4 from 12.Highest new entry this week for Thewith Cheerio followed by local bandin at 13 with Briggen Blue Bird. As weSwedish Metal Aid charity single the chartsnow feature a second one with the new entryof Dionne & Friends.
Sam Cooke - Life At The Harlem SquareClub '63 (RCA)One of the most legendary soul artists in a re-release of RCA. A magnificent live set featur-ing hits like Bring It On Home To Me, inGang, Twisting The Night Away and Cvery well recorded and backed up by a .odlive band. A historical recording that shouldbe part of any record collection.
crirLA pcluninu u
knee deep in the hoopla
Starship - Knee Deep In The Hoopla(Guant/RCA)Strong collection of AOR-type of material ofwhich the single We Built This City is currentlyno.1 in the US. Produced by 6th band mem-
Peter Wolf, the band hines best in trackslike Rock Myself To SI Joan Jett like an-them, the power ballad sperate Heart andthe rock song Private Room.
Joni Mitchell - Dog Eat Dog (Geffen)Probably Joni's most commercial and acces-sible effort to date. This is not to say howeverthat fans of the old star will be disappointed asher unique style of songwriting has lost noth-ing of its impact. Produced by Thomas Dolby, she is joined by Ralph McDonald on the trackGood Friends and other keycuts includeShiney Toys and Tax Free.

TEENAGE KICKSLots of moves and changes mark the Europe-an Hot 100 Album charts this week. DireStraits and Madonna continue their fight forthe no. 1 spot; this week Dire Straits again atno. 1. Simple Minds make a dynamic move tono. 3 (from 6) and Iron Maiden's double live -album creeps up 2 notches (5-7). Last yearMaiden were able to have their album Powers -lave charted 1 week at the no. 1 spot.
With new positions in France, Belgium,Switzerland and Sweden and remaining toppositions in the UK (still no. 1):, Germany, Hol-land and Denmark, Sade's 2nd albumPromise jumps in its 2nd week straight to no.7 and this makes the album of all the highestalbum entries in 1985 (Tears For Fears andAlan Parson's) the fastest mover (in their 2ndweek Tears For Fears were stuck at no. 13while Alan Parsons only moved up 1 place). The album airplay on the Promise album con-tinues and she is still the favourite album onthe European album shows. The sophisticat-ed sounds continue to fill European radio andthis will be prolonged in the coming weeks.
The Dire Straits album remains a fave air-play album as well and the Straits Sounds mixvery well with Sade and are frequently playedin conjunction with each other.
Grace Jones in her 3rd week up to no. 12and Elton John in his 2nd week to no. 13 (from31). Highest entry this week for Echo & TheBunnymen:, their compilation Songs To LearnAnd Sing (Korova) is new at 55. The album isa classic set of all their English hits (hardly anyof them actually crossed over to the Conti-nent) including Seven Seas, The Killing Moon
and their latest Bring On The Dancing Horses. The album has a splendid package, includesa lyric book and the initial quantities of cas-settes contain 4 extra tracks.
Feargal Sharkey has 2nd highest entrythis week, his self -titled debut album is new at58. The career of the ex -Undertones singerhas taken a strange course. In '79 The Under-tones were responsible for a string of cheerfuland innocent popsongs like Teenage Kicksand Here Comes The Summer. The groupbroke up in '83 and now Feargal Sharkey isback on his own with a commercially ar-ranged and very accessible white soul album. In a production by Dave Stewart (of Euryth-mics fame) Sharkey's current work is a com-plete deviation from the past and the rebellionhas grown into more of an Adult Contem-porary stance.
Bubbling under the Album chart (no. 102)is the debut album by L.A. based band CockRobin. Their music is not directly related to thecurrent boom of AOR coming from America(Starship, Mr. Mister):, but definitely comesinto that direction and could have a goodchance to crack Europe. There are many new good albums out in Eu-rope at the moment. The 2nd album by LloydCole & The Commotions:, Easy Pieces (Poly-dor) is a fine set of acoustic based composi-tions. The production of Langer & Winstanley(Madness, Costello) surely helps make this avery accessible and commercial LP. The Ever-ly Brothers have a new one, Born Yesterday:,again produced by Dave Edmunds. Other tipsinclude the new Ray Parker Jr., Joni Mitchelland Magnum.

deoVIDEO NASTIES RECLASSIFIEDJust three months after Britain's Video Recordings Act, designed to out-law so-called video "nasties" was actually set in operation, the authori-ties in London admit it could take up to three years to clear and classifythe backlog of films * At least 12,000 films, of all kinds from musicalsto horror, are involved. The classification board is issuing certificates toup to 80 films a week and is training new staff to cope * The problemis that under the law the "censors" have to look at all films which are nowon video release, even though they've previously been classified forcinema showing * The act doesn't allow a cinema certificate to covera video release. One official says: "We hope that in three years, we willhave covered the backlog and about 3,000 new titles. We should haveclassified about 20,000 films by then." The reason for the slow progressis that some films are subtly altered for the video market, with maybeviolent scenes recut to have more impact. Around five in a hundred aregiven classifications different to those for the cinema versions * Theclassification board charges 4.60 pounds Sterling a minute for newEnglish -language films and 2.30 pounds Sterling a minute for thosepreviously classified for the cinema *

MIDEM-CREATION OF ROGER WHITTAKERINTERNATIONAL BUREAU
An international record and musicpublishing market is to be held inCannes at Midem between 27-31thJanuary 1986. During the con-gress, the creation of an Interna-tional Audio Productions Bureau(B.I.PS.) will be announced. Thebureau will centralize and publicizepropositions coming from all par-ticipants in order to help themnegotiate contracts, exchangeprogrammes and reach co -
productions agreements. Theprogrammes will be broadcastover Minitel to all the stands and to
various meeting points within thePalais des Festivals.
A programme catalogue willalso be published and providedfree of charge to all Mip-radio par-ticipants. In order to give this radioprogramme market the means re-quired for its development and in-ternationalization, Midem will thisyear be inviting for the first time 50programme directors from all overthe world, as well as media direc-tors from advertising agencies andmajor advertisers.
MALIBU(continued from page 1)
with bartender on stage for the mu-sicians to use between numbers.
To the band, Malibu's supportmeant the difference between los-ing money and making a modestprofit on the tour. To the drinkscompany it meant Europe -widepublicity and, as marketing direc-tor Elaine Laws frankly admits, away round some of the restrictionson alcohol advertising in Europe.
Apart from the 250,000 fanswho actually watched the con-certs, there was a ten million TV au-dience for a two-hour Spanish spe-cial on the band's open air Barce-lona show, national TV coverage inDenmark of a publicity stuntpromoting the tour, an hour-longvideo recording made at the Zenithin Paris, and much more in the wayof personal appearances by KidCreole and other members of theband at party nights, disco events, talent contests and the like, all con-tributing to the overall exposurelevel for the tour and for Malibu.
To Angela Davies and Arch Dy-son of the Promotion Company,
which negotiated and co-ordinated the sponsorship deal, the tour demonstrated how impor-tant it is to bring sponsor and artisttogether at an early stage. Toomany such deals, they believe, come down to little more than acompany credit on a tour pro-gramme note.
In the last few years tour costsfor major bands have rocketed. With many tours running at a loss, big company sponsorship has be-come increasingly common, rang-ing from Malibu's relatively modestinvestment in the Kid Creole tour toPhilips seven -figure backing of theyear -long Dire Straits trek.
"Quite a few companies aregetting on the bandwagon," saysAngela Davies. "Our fear is that itmay lead to overkill and affect thewhole image of this kind of spon-sorship. You can't insult the public:we want sponsorship to be seen asbeing mutually beneficial, not justas a way of making money. Toursponsorship is not a kind of musi-cal advertising campaign, it needsa responsible approach and a lotof careful planning."
Sire act Kid Creole and The Coconuts- European tour sponsored byMalibu.
GERMANY'S MILLION SELLERRoger Whittaker, born in Kenya, es-tablished as a hit -making popsinger in England and unable tospeak German, has become WestGermany's most popular and suc-cessful recording artist singing inthe German language.
In recent months, he has soldover 3.5 million records in Germanin this country, his last four albumsall reaching gold or platinum sta-tus. "Typisch Roger Whittaker"sold over 900,000 copies, "EinGlueck Dass Es Dich Gibt" morethan 1.1 million (and in the chartsfor eight months), "WeihnachtenMit Roger Whittaker" more than400,000. And his current LP, "DuGehoerst Zu Mir" went gold before
going on sale, with advance ordersof 400,000 -plus.
Whittaker records his Germansongs phonetically, parrot -style.His run of English -language hits inGermany, and other Europeancountries, started in the late 1960's,and his first two chart -topping al-bums were in English.
He started recording in Ger-man in 1979 and says: "It pays towork on a territory -by -territory pat-tern. It makes sense to record indifferent languages." His new al-bum is being produced in Lon-don's Abbey Road Studios, in En-glish as a starter, by Bruce Welchof the Shadows.
RAVERA CONTRACT WITH SAN REMOMusic business veteran GianniRevere recently renewed his con-tract with the Italian San Remo Fes-tival for another 3 years. This yearthe festival will be held from 13 -15thFebruary 1986 and it will bepresented by Pippo Baudo. 20 es-tablished artists and 6 new artists(chosen from 40 entries) will bepresented to the audiences and all
the artists in the race will sing liveon backing tapes. There will alsobe 10 special guests, of which 5foreign.
Last year the San Remo Fes-tival (broadcast by national chan-nel RAI) reached a peak of 90 mil-lion viewers. Ravera has been inthe music business for 45 years ofwhich 22 as festival organizer.
SUPERCHANNEL(continued from page 1)and will carry the best of Britishbroadcast television's output, mak-ing it a serious rival to Sky Chan-nel, whose programme mix hasbeen criticised for over -depen-dence on bland American series.Unlike Sky however, Superchannelwill not originate any of its ownprogramming.
Despite its accumulated lossesof 17 million pounds, Sky Channelhas built an audience of aroundfour million cable homes in Eu-rope, half of them in Holland, andhopes to reach seven million by theend of the year. Advertisingrevenue, though modest, is stillgrowing, and British televisionchiefs have watched the progressof the pioneering service withsome anxiety.
Because it will be supplied freeto cable networks, Superchannelwill be dependent on advertisingsales for income, and no one is yet
sure whether there will be enoughEuropean advertising to go round. In fact it seems likely that Sky,which has done all the hard workin persuading major multi -nationalcompanies to advertise on cableand is just beginning to see thefruits of its efforts, will be the one tolose out, though Sky's chief execu-tive Patrick Fox has said he wel-comes the competition.
For Superchannel's backersmuch remains to be done. A chiefexecutive has to be found, formalapproval from the IndependentBroadcasting Authority must besought, satellite transponder ar-rangements have to be finalised, and agreement with the talent un-ions has to be reached. In additionthe exact composition of the18 -hour -a -day service must bedecided. No details are available, but it seems certain that the sched-ule will include a music segment tocompete with Sky's 'Sky Trax'strand.
FRENCH TV'S(continued from page 1)rock programming. Antenne 2 hasa couple of very popular musicprogrammes. First of all the 1 hourand 45 minute programme C'EstEncore Mieux A Midi, the weeklySuper Platine (produced by a.o.Catherine Puech):, the daily Ge-orges Lang produced Bonsoir LesClips (a half hour of music videos):,plus the renowned Les Enfants DuRobk, a production of Blanc-Francard, (including the special
sections Rockline and SexMachine).
Canal Plus is headed by Mr.Rousselet and the artistic directoris Pierre 12Escure. By far the mostpopular programme on the CanalPlus channel is the Top 50, theFrench national Top 50 producedin co-operation with Europe 1 andthe Tele 7 Jour television weeklymagazine. Other popular pro-grammes include 4C+ (a dailymusic programme with live artistsin the studio) and the daily Zenith.

LOST IN THE STARSA&M's latest project Lost In The Stars is an interesting multi -artist interpretation of the works of asingle composer, the legendary Kurt Weill, of The Threepenny Opera fame.
Born in 1900 in the Jewish community of Dessau, Germany, Weill was steeped in music fromhis childhood. He was already writing symphonies and operas by his early twenties. His famousassociation with Brecht began when Weill, commissioned to write a one act opera, set to musica series of Brechtian poems. From that moment, their partnership, with the poet's social and topicalissues put to Weill's simple, melodic music; was a tremendous success. The political situation washowever worsening and Weill soon had to flee the country, for fear of arrest by the Gestapo. Hisnew life in America, on Broadway, brought him success after success.
Lost In The Stars:, a Broadway "musicaltragedy":, was received enthusiastically in theStates. And now, in the '80's the appeal ofthese moving and charming songs has notlessened. Lost In The Stars is an interestingblend of classical, jazz and folk music. Thesounds at times appear harsh and even dis-sonant, but the lyrics are compelling, emo-tional and strangely haunting.
The album is made up by such diverse ar-tists as Lou Re0:, arianne Fait ull TomWaits and Sting. ou Reed's version of Sep-
tember Song is an unusual and striking ren-dering of the well-known ballad. Mac TheK from The Threepenny Opera, originallya h or Louis Armstrong, is here interpretedby Sting in a smoother, more melodious ren-dering than is usual for this song with its harshlyrics. The contrasts continue throughout thismusically varied album. There is much tochoose from for all tastes- from MarianneFaithfull's insistent rendering of the Ballad OfThe Soldier's WC,.to the lyrical, violin -filledsounds of Youkali Tangfo:, performed by the
Armadillo String Quartet. There are thesophisticated jazz sounds of Lost In TheSt,;`).nd the more contemporary rock in-terpretation of Alabama Song.
All in all, Lost In The Stars is a unique horn-mage to Weill's remarkable musical flexibility.
JUST FOR MONEYPaul Hardcastle had an enormous hit earlierthis year with 19:, which, in addition to beingnumber 1 in the UK charts for five weeks, alsostayed 26 weeks in The European Hot 100(reaching highest position of no. 3). He hasnow come up with a new single Just forMoney:, this week new in the European Air-play Top 50 at 42.
Paul began working on it while 19 was stillat the top of the charts. After researching hissubject matter - The St. Valentine's Day Mas-sacre and The Great Train Robbery -
thoroughly for several weeks, he then setabout finding the right voices to play the vari-ous parts written into the Script' - and much tohis delight, two of his heroes, Bob Hoskinsand Lord Laurence Olivier both accepted thechallenge happily. In fact Lord ,Olivier hadheard 19 and had said that he would like to beinvolved in a similar kind of pop record! Sohaving recorded the very distinctive voices ofHoskins and Lord Olivier in two separate ses-sions in London and Newcastle, Paul set
about putting the whole lot together. Theresult is Just For Money:, a veritable pot-pourriof noises which chronicles the events sur-rounding the two infamous crimes in question,
and gives a wry comment on the things thatsome people will do... just for money. BothJust For Money and 19 appear in his new al-bum, Paul Hardcastle just out on Chrysalis.

LONDON CALLINGby Howard Marks
No sooner do I mention hot import trackMr. DJ by Concept in the last issue, than it getssnapped up for UK release by Fourth &Broadway. The record should be in the shops,as you read this word. Also check out a greatlittle reggae record that gets it's UK releasehere this week. The record is called GirlieGirlie by Sophia George. It could do as well asAlthia & Donna did some years ago. Well donethat man. The man in question is radio Oneproducer, Jeff Griffin, he produces the AndyPeebles show on a Friday night. The show re-cently went up to Manchester to catch crick-eter Ian Botham on a nationwide charity walkto raise money for research into Leukemia.Jeff walked twenty miles with Ian, and helpedto raise some money. It is rumoured that cer-tain Record Pluggers have actually openedtheir wallets for the first time in years, to let themoths out, and give Jeff some money towardsthe charity.
Radio One producer Phil Ward Largeleaves the Beeb at the end of the year to be-come programme director at Radio Luxem-bourg, he replaces Richard Swainson. RadioOne producer Dave Tate moves to BBC WorldService at the end of the year. All the best toboth in their new positions.
Former BBC radio publicity officers DanKirby & Alan Monohan have formed their ownPR company. Problems between SpandauBallet, and Chrysalis Records still abound. Itseems that Chrysalis broke a high court rulingnot to TV advertise the 'singles collection' bythe band. While on the subject of courts,Whaml's George Michael was cleared in courtof nicking one of Barry Manilow's hits of yearsgone by for the Wham biggie "Last Christ-mas". As the saying goes: Where There's a hit, there's a writ. Finally, Tears For Fears havebeen doing the rounds of radio interviews, and maintain that they will be keeping a lowprofile in the UK during 1986.

"Hithouse is a mixture of black music andTop 40 material with a feature of a 12" ev-ery day (chosen by the listeners). Sixty per-cent of my programme is dance -orientatedand the rest is filled with Top 40 material. I
think this mixture really appeals to my tar-get audience which is not older than 25. Atthe moment black music has a similarstimulance to the German youth com-pared to that of The Stones and The Bea-tles in the 6T's. In my youth, music had afunction of shocking one's parents, themore they liked a particular record, themore we disliked it. Nowadays you can'tshock your parents with the Hooters orSandy Marton, but if you play e.g. Doug EFresh they probably won't like that. And asthe kids are constantly looking for some-thing new, black music still has this func-tion of rebellion.Very often I'll have artists live in the studio. My recent guests included a.o. HueyLewis, Boy George, Robert Palmer, Stingand Dio. In these 1 hour specials the artiststalk about their favourite records and whyin particular they like that record. As my programme is on TV prime time Iface a rather heavy competition, but recentratings indicate that our eveningprogramme attracts one million peopleplus a shadow audience from East Germa-ny, Austria, and Switzerland. When it
comes to trends, it is rather obvious thatdanceable rock is coming up. Mainly therecent flood of American AOR-material isvery striking with examples of Starship andMr. Mister. It is quite striking to see here in Germanya new generation of producers. Producerslike Harold Faltermeyer, Michael Cretuand Gunther Mende (Jennifer Rush) areall German producers who grew up withmodern UK and US music and for the firsttime ever they can compete with foreignexamples. One of the most promising newacts according to me is Charlie Sexton, a17 year old guy from LA who debutes onthe MCA -label with an album produced byKeith Forsey.

A new no. 1 in the European charts! After 8weeks the Norwegian duo A -Ha have accom-plished it; with top positions in 12 Europeancountries they put Stevie Wonder back to no.2 this week, making it the 3rd time this yearthat a Euro-production is ruling the charts.
Earlier this year Opus' Life Is Live was for6 weeks the no. 1 in Europe (only once inter-rupted by Duran's A View To A Kill) and Bal-timora's Tarzan Boy (8 consecutive weeks atno.1) was the other Euro topper. There are noserious competitors at the moment, the differ-ence with Alive And Kicking and Nikita is still
iderable (although Jennifer Rush's ThePower Love - yet another Euro production- is a very s dy climber to the top: this weekmoving to no. And with the Take On Me sin-gle for the 5th week being the best played sin-gle in Europe as well, the Norwegian domina-tion of Europe is complete.
And talking about duos, last week Wham!had the highest entry in the European AirplayTop 50. This week they have highest entry inthe Hot 100: with new entries in the UK(straight in at no.2!):, Holland and Ireland, I'mYour Man enters at 27. With this new single,Wham! continue their blue-eyed soul interpre-tation of the Motown sound, making it themost copied pop sound in the world.
With duet of Collins & Martin:,Separat- currently on its way to the topof the Ame charts (no. 3 at the moment):,Europe has stayed a bit behind so far. Andalthough the success in Europe will not hap-pen on the same scale as in the States, thesultry ballad is this week's 2nd best entry at 62(due to good positions in the UK, Italy and
ay) other entries for Whitney HoustonMichel Sardou:, (87) Cock Robin(88)
Round One (89).Moving over to the European Airplay it was
to be expected that the new Lionel Richie sin-gle would be the hottest addition on all Euro-pean stations this week. A Hot Radio Add lastweek, Say You Say Me now highest entry inthe European Airplay Top 50 at 16. Especiallythe UK stations have nearly all added the newNik Kershaw single entitled When A Heart
( ife;;;:, his week new at 36. No doubt it will
big jump next week when the Beneluxand German stations have added it as well.Other entries for Paul_ ardcastle (see-,separate article on pag oug E Frf(inc, )Chrysalis act Go West:, S e (new single'Dd.You Believe In Miracles); the single has adefinite x-mas feel all over) and another HotRadio Add of last week, Grant & Graham withtheir 2nd duet Mated (a Todd Rundgrencover).
A very likely candidate for next week's en-try in the European Airplay charts (and Hot100) is the new McCartney single Spies LikeUs. Not all our correspondents howeverseemed to be keen on this one. Many think it
sounds too raucous and chaotic for their for-mats, although they have no other alternativethan playing it. Yet others think this is McCart-ney's best rock & roll effort as to date.
With the recent negociations betweenReagan and Gorbachov, the Sting single Rus-sians will be the exact single to accompanydocumentaries and news items, we sincerelyhope however Sting will not be the only onewho will profit from this top meeting.
Italian artist Claudio Baglioni has a no. 1
album in the Italian charts at the moment. Asingle from that album (Strada Facendo) hasjust been released on CBS outside Italy. Hiswarm and sensual vocals could also do well inthe rest of Europe, we think.
