M2M Service for Trace and TrackVisibility. Manageability. Control
IIn the competitive world of fleet manage-
ment, there are multitudes of ways to stay
ahead of the competition. A key factor is the
ability to gain real time knowledge of every
vehicle in a fleet, providing companies with
round-the-clock control over their assets.
In order to stay up to date with competitors
around the country, our location Tracking
and M2M Services incorporate our Ready
Business model, helping your company
achieve operational agility and optimal
utilization of resources.
By using our M2M services, fleets provide
businesses the crucial intelligence they need
to maximize their efficiency, while reducing
costs. Vodafone’s tailored services ensure
customer satisfaction, supply chain optimiza-
tion and the potential for new revenue
streams.

The market for these services is only growing
every day. During April-November 2011, the
domestic commercial vehicle (CV) industry
posted a growth of 20.0 %( Source: SIAM,
ICRA’s Estimates). We at Vodafone recognize
this and the subsequent increase in the need
for M2M communication and by incorporat-
ing our exceptional Vodafone Network
Technology seek to provide simple,
cost-effective solutions for commercial,
private and government-owned vehicles
across the country.
Our robustly built M2M connectivity service
helps businesses monitor the location of
assets such as vehicles, machines and
consignments. Efficient tracking ensures
timely distribution of goods, resulting in
proficiency in business and a control-ready
environment.
Introduction
While this industry is both burgeoning and
highly competitive, it is also very fragmented.
Currently, out of all the vehicles operational
in India, 1.2 million are heavy and medium
commercial vehicles (H&MCV trucks); with
the average fleet owner owning only 5
vehicles. Large businesses have to depend on
aggregators to provide fleets for their
fluctuating needs. There is very low technical
knowledge penetration and the need for
technical sophisticated tools is minimal, due
to limited Key Performance Indexes (KPIs) for
fleet owners.
There are little or no options in India for the
tracking of cargo or fleet. The onus lies solely
on business owners, whose goods are being
transported, adding another liability to their
heavy logistics workload.
As a result, there is reluctance to invest
CAPEX in fleet owners and transporters. None
of the concerned parties are willing to invest
in hardware needed for these services, due to
high costs and frequent upgrading or
maintenance needs.
Challanges of traditional telemetry
Traditionally, trace and track services are
rooted in industrial telemetry, which tracks
the locations of moving assets.
These services are expensive, not regularly
updated and therefore not always reliable.
Without a warranty on the hardware, a
tracking system based solely on GPS proves
to be uneconomical. By incorporating a
communication based GPS model, spending
of companies is reduced, hardware is at par
with the latest technology and businesses are
provided with a fixed contract value for a
certain number of vehicles, per year.
Trace and Track needs innovative business
models that would be mutually beneficial for
everyone in the value chain.

On an average, it takes about 25 days to
activate an asset for tracking. With a
pre-tailored pre-configured plan, this time
can be reduced to 5 days, saving precious
time and energy.
An average asset being tracked consumes
about 50 MB of data per month, while being
in dormant mode (stationary) for upto 5 days.
Clearly, the market need is to have plans with
more flexibility and limited data limits to
prevent misuse and wastage of resources
used to access telecom services.
A typical asset remains with the same service
provider for an average of 23 months, with
attrition happening only in case of poor
service levels. The customer loyalty is high
in case of superior and proactive response
time to business critical asset recovery.
