Education about sustainability:
– is an awareness lesson, or the technical knowledge and skills about sustainability
– is not necessarily oriented to achieving change.
Education for sustainability:
– is the use of education as a tool to achieve a sustainable future
– EfS is focused on empowering people to take action
– EfS includes elements of education about sustainability.
We learnt about ...........
Using the principles of EfS
• participation
• envisioning the future
• transformation and change
• systems thinking
• critical thinking and reflection
• partnerships for change
• life long learning
We learnt .......
• to embed EfS into our learning strategies
• to build a culture that incorporates EfS
• to work constructively with other worldviews

responses to
sustainability leading to
commitment to sustainability
practices

Reflecting, critical analysis
In pairs explore, discuss and record: • How your mobile phone was produced (energy consumed in
production)
• What natural resources were used in the production
• How it was transported to you (and associated energy use)
• How it was packaged?
Your mobile phone….
How will it be disposed of?
Will it be thrown away?
Where is away?
