Brainstorm: from what you currently know about the time period of 1300-1600, think of

reasons why a European country would want to explore and what they would need to

explore

1. The Renaissance

• New spirit of adventure and curiosity• Marco Polo’s adventure to China

– People were fascinated by other cultures• Ask the question: what else is out there?

2. Religion

• Catholic Church – Missionaries - Jesuits–Need to get new converts

since Protestant Reformation

–Spread its power–Compete with the

Protestant nations

3. Monarchies - Power• After Renaissance/Reformation,

monarchies have more power in their country

• Goal: to expand their nation’s power

4. Wealth/Trade• Trade from Asia had shown what

resources were out there–Nutmeg, ginger, silk, fabrics, sugar,

pepper, etc…– http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DtpuBsLHMd8&feature=youtu

• Goal: Need to find a way around the ME– Quicker and cheaper route

Reasons for Exploration

• The Three Gs–God (religious)–Gold (resources)–Glory (curiosity/fame/power)

How? – Technology/Innovations

the wind.• Portolani – accurate maps• Compass• Astrolabe – determine a ship’s

latitude
