1) General
With drastically increased income, customer’s need for displaying gadget has
become diverse since the generalization of color TV, following black and white
TV.
Especially, the success of PDP, LCD and DLP which solved TV’s limitation,
hugeness, has brought Renaissance of display product.
Each display method has its strong and weak points and many efforts are
aimed at improving weak points.
Unlike the time when there were only CRT TVs, customers now have broader
choice and have higher expectation. Sometimes various options can be even
confusing. For this reason, comparing different type of display can help general
understanding before looking into CRT TV.

2) Comparison between display product The quality of CRT TV, PDP and LCD products has become dramatically higher since their lau
nching. The comparison will be made based on the present condition, not considering different time of release. Braun TVs are distinct from others by their inexpensive price. However, Braun TVs are heavy. Also purity and image can be easily affected by geomagnetic field.LCD TVs are thin and leave more space. However they are expensive and imperfect in the aspects of gradation stain, response property and viewing angle. PDP’s hugeness can be appealing to the customers but high power consumption and price are the limitations. DLP is relatively inexpensive for its size, but still have the problem of lamp life. Many companies are putting enormous effort in reducing these limitations and make products more satisfactory to the customers.Every display product is under the continuous progress to meet higher expectation of customers.

Braun Tube (Cathode Ray Tube:CRT) : A vacuum tube which transforms electric signals into optical images such as shape and letter by electric beams. Braun tube was named after the inventor Karl F. Braun and generally called CRT (Cathode Ray Tube)

• Phosphor : Material which emits visible rays. For color CRT, three
phosphors of red, green and blue are used.

1) Electron gun produces image. It varies the amount of electron beam according to the electric signal of three primary colors, red, green and blue
2) Light will come out when the electrons pass through the shadow mask.
Shadow mask is an iron plate with thickness of 0.15mm, placed in front of the phosphor about 10mm ahead. This plate has holes with the diameter of around 0.3 ㎜ . Electron beams from an electron gun pass through this hole and collides onto the dots on the phosphoric surface and radiate red, green and blue.

6) Deflection Principle
There are several ways of deflecting electron beam and the one uses magnetic
field is called electric deflection. In this method, coil is placed where the electron
beams pass through, to form a uniform magnetic field. This magnetic field lead the
electrons to different route as in Fleming’s left hand rule.
This is the basic principle of Braun CRT deflection.

- Geometrical Distortion (Item : NS distortion, EW distortion)
- Cause
As the screens (inside of the panel) become flatter and slimmer, the curvature center of the screen does not coincide with the deflection center of DY
Due to this, the three electron beams which focused to the center are diverted and crossed.
