You cant pounce on your own Q. ( well, why would you ? )

The ___________law is a mathematical principle which describes the relationship between the volume and the area as a shape's size increases or decreases. This principle states that, as a shape grows in size, its volume grows faster than its surface area. When applied to the real world this principle has many implications which are important in fields ranging from mechanical engineering to biomechanics.

It helps explain phenomena including why large mammals like elephants have a harder time cooling themselves than small ones like mice, and why building taller and taller skyscrapers is increasingly difficult, and also why the largest animals to exist on earth have been aquatic in nature.

Either gimme the law or the fictitious place which is often cited as a reference to it.

THE SCIENCE OF LILLIPUT

___________ is a form of medical ventilator that enables a person to breathe when normal muscle control has been lost or the work of breathing exceeds the person's ability.

Rows of ________filled hospital wards at the height of the polio outbreaks of the 1940s and 1950s, assisting the breathing of children and adults (mostly children) with bulbar polio and bulbospinal polio. A polio patient with paralyzed lungs could spend up to a week inside _________ .

When Neils Bohr was awarded the Order of the Elephant, the highest civilian order of Denmark, in 1947, he was asked to create a family coat of arms as per the customs.

He chose something that supposedly represented two incoming colliding heavy ions with quarks in the nuclei.

What could have been his choice for the crest ?

THE YIN-YANG

From time immemorial, __________has been a prominent character in folk-tales and legends. The first authentic studies were published as early as 1500’s.

However, the image of a live adult could be captured only in 2004, and the first filming of this elusive-enchanting-mysterious-blah-blah creature happened only in 2012, off the coast of Japan.

The footage was shown on Discovery Channel's show X Is Real on 27 January 2013, and on X : Filming the Impossible –Natural World Special on BBC.

The use of N (numerus) for X and of Q, C, etc., for _______, is found in Xylander's edition of Diophantus of 1575.

In 1627, Camillo Glorioso, in a work published at Naples/ wrote N, q, c, qq, qc, cc, qqc, qcc, and ccc to represent _______.

But the usage of X became popular after Descartes in 1637 in his work La geometric, where he used these without any formal comments as such, and we all have followed suit from that day.

X

He was an American microbiologist who developed over 36 vaccines; an unparalleled degree of productivity. Of the 14 vaccines routinely recommended in current vaccine schedules, he developed eight: those for measles, mumps, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, chickenpox, meningitis, pneumonia and Haemophilusinfluenzae bacteria. Thus, he is credited with saving more lives than any other medical scientist of the 20th century. After his death Ralph Nader wrote, "Yet almost no one knew about him, saw him on television, or read about him in newspapers or magazines. His anonymity, in comparison with Madonna, Michael Jackson or an assortment of grade B actors, tells something about our society's and media's concepts of celebrity; much less of the heroic.“In 2007, Paul Offit published a biography, entitled “Vaccinated: One Man's Quest to Defeat the World's Deadliest Diseases.”

________uses four standardized encoding modes (numeric, alphanumeric, binary, and kanji) to efficiently store data. The system was invented in 1994 by Denso Wave to track vehicles during manufacture, but now has become popular outside the automotive industry due to its fast readability and greater storage capacity.

The use of Reed–Solomon error correction makes this system very flexible, usable even when damaged and gives room for artistic inputs.

What system ?

The epitaph on his tomb initially read,“1st Muslim Nobel Laureate”

On the orders of a local magistrate, the word “Muslim” was later erased, and it now read a nonsensical,“1st Nobel Laureate.”

DOROTHY ‘CROWFOOT’ HODGKIN

In 1861 Alphonse Louis Poitevin, a French chemist, found that ferro-gallate in gum is light sensitive. A coating of this chemical on a paper or other base may be used for the purpose.

The best known method is probably a process using ammonium ferric citrate and potassium ferricyanide.

The result of either of the two processes gave the famous name to this techinque.

What technique ?

The swiftness of the process is the main culprit for this undesired effect. Light, when passes through the pupil, reflects off the fundus at the back of the eyeball, and comes out through the pupil. The _______ is caused due to the ample amount of blood in the choroid which nourishes the back of the eye,. The eye contains several photostable pigments which absorb all the short wavelength regions, and hence the undesired effect takes shape.

What are we talking about ?

THE RED-EYE EFFECT !

FERMAT’S LAST THEOREM

Ek Doctor Ki Maut [1990] is a critically acclaimed film by Bengali director Tapan Sinha, which depicts the bureaucratic negligence, reprimand and insult of a doctor and his research, instead of recognition.

The film is loosely based on the life of Dr.SubhashMukhopadyaya, who faced a similar insult & harassment from the Govt., and eventually committed suicide in 1981.

What was his achievement in in 1978, which would have made him the 1st in the world to do so, had it been 67 days earlier ?

HE WAS THE BRAIN BEHIND THE 1ST TEST TUBE BABY IN INDIA

In 2004, a 2m statue of __________ was unveiled at CERN. The statue was given to CERN by the Indian government to celebrate the research center's long association with India.

A special plaque next to the statue explains the significance of the metaphor with quotations from Fritjof Capra.

“ Hundreds of years ago, Indian artists created “visual images of ______________in a beautiful series of bronzes. In our time, physicists have used the most advanced technology to portray the patterns of the cosmic dance. The metaphor of the cosmic dance thus unifies ancient mythology, religious art and modern physics.”

What was our gift to CERN ?

An ___________ is a microfluidic cell culture device, developed by scientistsat the Wyss Institute, Harvard, that contains continuously perfusedchambers inhabited by living cells arranged to ___________. These devicesproduce levels of _______ functionality not possible with conventional 2D or3D culture systems. They also enable high-resolution, real-time imaging andin vitro analysis of biochemical, genetic and metabolic activities. In thecontext of drug discovery and development, it should be especially valuablefor the study of molecular mechanisms of action, prioritization of leadcandidates, toxicity testing and biomarker identification.

X & Y have been in world news recently, for different reasons.

Y’s popularity outside the scientific community could be attributed exclusively to Z, a much discussed topic in the past few months.

X, Y, Z …………..

X – STEPHEN HAWKINGY – KIP THORNEZ – SCIENTIFIC ADVISOR FOR Interstellar

During his visit to the Wallops center, NASA Maryland, X observed a painting that was hung in the reception lobby, depicting a battle scene between Y and Z.

X was amazed that Y was being honoured at NASA, whereas he was being forgotten in his homeland, inspite of being a pioneer of the technology depicted in the painting..

Y - CHIMERA

In one of the most crucial scientific races ever, X, already a legend in multiple fields, put forward a proposal, which was later proved wrong .

The eventual winners of this race were also inclined towards the same incorrect proposal, but they were vehemently diverted by Y, a bitter rival of X.

Instead, Y suggested them to take help from the work of Z, and the rest is history. Z is one of the least credited scientific personals ever.

Funny thing is that, X had a chance to visit Z, which he didn’t, and that proved to be decisive in the end.

Name the 3 persons involved.

The ‘jungle gym’ is a fun ride found in almost all parks and recreation centres round the world. Its invention is attributed to one Mr.ABC in ____.

As a matter of fact, it was his father who built the very 1st

jungle gym when ABC was a kid, with a very specific aim in his mind.

But ABC didn’t popularize these with that original aim, and hence, we all know them as they are known today.

What was the original purpose behind their making ?

Dermestidae are a family of beetles with a number of species and common names, including the larder beetle, carpet beetle and khapra beetle.

These beetles are considered pests due to their proclivity to attack wool, silk, cotton, linen, fur, feathers etc., rendering them a plague of the wardrobe – one species is known as the ‘bow bug’ because they feed on violin bow hairs.

However, these beetles are also important to a particular function required by scientists, and are found at various natural history museums – the National History Museum in London, for example, has a dedicated ‘beetlecam’ on its website to allow aficionados to follow them.

What function do they serve at these museums?

Flesh-eating beetles strip whole animal carcasses down to skeletons – use of chemicals can eat into bones and change their structure, but the beetles clean skeletons naturally by stripping off the flesh and leaving the bones and collagen untouched.

Before coming up with the name Intel, Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore wanted to give their company a different name. However, they decided against it, owing to the fact that it would be an ill-suited name for an electronics company.

What name and what was the reason behind the switch ?

MOORE NOYCE = MORE NOICE
