TWO THINGS TO NOTE:1. Nowhere are spiritual gifts predicated on gender
2. No list of spiritual gifts are exhaustive
EPHESIANS 4:7, 11-13 (NRSV)But each of us was given grace according to
the measure of Christ’s gift…The gifts he gave were that some
would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers,
to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,
until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity,
to the measure of the full stature (presence) of Christ.

“The gifted leaders, together inmutual submission to each other’s gifts,
discern the mind of Christ for each situation. This is collaborative leadership…
The leadership group is not a democracy. It is a pneumatocracy (governed by the Spirit).
Each person must lead out of their giftingand submit their proposals to the rest of the body for further development
and eventual mutual assent.”
DAVID FITCH (emphasis added)
“Whereas hierarchy tends to centralize authorityand push power in and up to the person
at the top, a church based on the Spirit’s gifts,as founded in the discipline of the fivefold ministry,
decentralizes authority, pushes power down, and disperses it out. The fivefold ministryempowers people on the streets to do the
ministry of the kingdom. Thus Christ’s authorityand reign flourishes in all the circles of our lives.”

MATTHEW 6:9-13 (KNT)Our father in heaven, may your name be honored,
may your kingdom come, may your will be done as in heaven, on earth.
Give us today the bread we need now;and forgive us the things we owe,
as we too have forgiven what was owed to us.Don’t bring us into the great trial,
but rescue us from evil.
THE LORD’S PRAYER (New Zealand Anglican Prayer Book)
Eternal Spirit, Earth-maker, Pain-bearer, Life-giver,Source of all that is and that shall be,
Father and Mother of us all,Loving God, in whom is heaven:
The hallowing of your name echo through the universe! The way of your justice be followed
by the peoples of the world!Your heavenly will be done by all created beings!
THE LORD’S PRAYER (New Zealand Anglican Prayer Book)
Your commonwealth of peace and freedom sustain our hope and come on earth.
With the bread we need for today, feed us.In the hurts we absorb from one another, forgive us.
In times of temptation and test, strengthen us.From trials too great to endure, spare us.
From the grip of all that is evil, free us. For you reign in the glory of the power that is love,
now and forever. Amen.

“…prayer’s primary task is toalign us with God and (God’s) purposes. It brings us into a relationship in which
we become participants in (God’s)work to change the world.”

BENEDICTION (Mark 12)One of the scribes…asked him,
“Which commandment is the first of all?” Jesus answered, “The first is:
‘Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God
with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’
The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’
There is no other commandment greater than these.”
