Work done as Head, Dept of PHT(1.7.2004-25-8-2004)
As Head of the Department of Postharvest Technology for a brief period (1-7-2004 to
25-8-2004), took several iniatives especially for the growth of the department, in
addition to the routine administrative work as listed here:
Introduced Gift Pack Scheme and initiated steps to make the C.C.S. rules.
An area was carved out in the Department of Postharvest Technology, to
serve out as a ‘Juice Bar’ to increase the sale of the products prepared in the
Processing Plant of the Dept
Proposal to start analytical services to the food industry were prepared and
submitted during 2004.
During this time, efforts were made to get research projects for the department
accordingly some projects were got prepared and submitted by the scientists of
the department. These include Mini Mission -1 HP under which a project on
wild apricot utilization was submitted while another was submitted to HP
Science and Technology Council on value addition to apricot and wild
apricot. Both the projects have now been sanctioned.
AICRP project on PHT was also sanctioned during this time and made
operational.
Work done as Head of the Departmentof PHT/FST(1.3.2008 - till date)
Took over as Head of the department of Postharvest technology w.e.f. Ist March,2008,
and performed the following work especially in addition to the routine administrative work
of the dept.
Streamlined the teaching, research and extension of the department keeping in
view the rules and regulations in letter and spirits.
Made attempts to earn money by way of training of students, accordingly
students from several institutions viz; Punjabi university Patiala and Engineering
college ,Kernal, Lovely professional university were trained.
Made efforts to increase the income of fruit processing unit.
Took up the case of internet on- line journals with the appropriate authorities
and as a result an international journal of Springer is on the on line computer of
the University.
Upgraded the computer of the office and that of the scientists and got their
cases approved from the central development scheme.
Got processed the cases of books for the library out of the grant of CDA as a
result several books on PHT/Food Science technologies are now available in the
University Library.
To help rationalize the course load of the teachers, a committee of teachers
was set up to look into the various aspects of the problem and accordingly the
courses are being allotted..
Strengthened and got innovated the laboratories under, Quality control
laboratory, Fermentation technology lab,Computer networking lab and AICRP
project on PHT.
Made efforts in getting more space for the department and the laboratory
allocated to the department is now being renovated as computer networking lab
while the has been developed as Quality control lab.
Under the Ministry of Food Processing Industries project, a spray drier, gas
analyser ,pulveriser, vacuum dehydrator etc has been purchased and got installed
in the laboratory. Purchases for more equipment is being made under the project.
Got installed and made functioning, the CA storage systems in the dept under
the experiential learning project of ICAR.
The experiential learning programme for BSc Hort students has also been
started in the department.
Made efforts for the needy purchases under the central assistance program of
the ICAR under the Dean, College of Horticulture .
Got prepared a project proposal on FIST and the same has been short listed for
presentation.
Got prepared a project proposal on health food and submitted the same to the
NAIP programme during 2008, and another on PHT management to Govt of
Himachal Pradesh.
As results of efforts made 2 projects submitted by the scientists of the dept
one oil and another on Pomegranate have approved by Novod and DST, Govt of
India for funding while that submitted by me to ICAR mini mission has been
sanctioned and made operational.
Made efforts for patenting the technologies developed by the department. Out
of eight technologies submitted, 2 have been approved for commercialization by
NRDC, New Delhi.
Under the FIST project made efforts to purchase the equipment like HPLC and
renovated the lab.
Departmental library has been developed and under the projects books worth
two lacs have been purchase and are being used by the deparment scientists and
students.
The PHT club under operation in the dept had been reactivated and is
operational now.
Made efforts and now there is a chapter of AFST in the department and as a
result the faculty and students become aware of developments in the food science
and technology.
Due to awareness created , two of our PhD students have been awarded the
DST scholarships under Inspire programme.
Academic:
Restored the academic atmosphere of the Department resulting more number of
students are taking interest to get their degrees from this department. Even the
B.Sc./M.Sc./Ph.D. students of outside institutions are also taking guidance as well as
conducting their research work in the Department. In this direction following steps have been
taken:
Laboratory Development:-
On personal efforts, got financial assistance from Central Development Funds and got
renovated the following laboratories to make them as Modular Labs in the Department to
conduct the research and students practical with the modern facilities with equipments:-
Computer Networking Laboratory under the FIST Project.
The Fruit Technology Laboratory has been made as Modular Laboratory out of funds
from Central Development Assistance as per the estimate made.
Fruit Processing Unit is being modernized with the pilot scale equipments/instruments
so as to meet out the demand of processed fruit products of the employees/students of
the university as well as the surrounding people.
Under the project FIST programme being run in the Department of Food Science and
Technology being PI of the project, purchased the following items to facilitate the
teachers, students and researchers of the Department:-
Books purchased with the total cost of Rs.1,24,129/- in the MOFI,New Delhi.
Purchased and installed successfully HPLC with the cost of Rs.14,56,714/-
Made renovation of Lab with the cost of Rs.5,00,000/- for computer networking.
Under the Ministry of Fruit and Processing Industries (MoFPI) Project got
procured/placed order/approved the case during 2010-2011:-
Pulverizer worth Rs.4.20 lakh
Vacuum Drying Unit worth Rs.3.50 laks
Freeze Dryer worth Rs.16.0 lakhs
CO2 /O2 analyser
Books on Postharvest Technology/Food Science Technology
Made efforts and got financial assistance from FIST to renovate a laboratory to make
computer Net-working laboratory in the Department @cost of Rs 5.49 lakhs which
are deposited with the office of Estate Office.
More efforts are being made to equipped the Fruit Processing Unit to produce the
prepare fruit and vegetable products on pilot scale so as to meet out the requirement
of the employees/students of the university as well as the surrounding people which
will certainly increase the domestic income of the Deptt.
Course Development:-
By the extensive efforts made to develop the course curriculum introduced in the
University/College under New PG programme developed by the ICAR. Further, keeping in
view the change of nomenclature of the Department of Postharvest Technology to the
Department of Food Science and Technology both M.Sc. and Ph.D. programme have been
introduced and implemented successfully.
Teaching innovations/aids:-
Books (worth about Rs. 1,00,000/-) have been purchased under the project entitled,
“To strengthen the post-graduate teaching and research facilities in the Department”
under FIST Programme implemented in the Department under my supervision and
procured in the University Library for the use of teachers/researchers and students of
the University.
Under central developments scheme, an interactive board had been installed in the
Quality Control Laboratory recently developed in the department as Modular Lab.
LCD to display the teaching material to the students/trainees in the Department has
been purchased and being used for projection activities.
A lecture room has been allotted to the Department. It has been renovated and
interactive board has been installed. The LCD Projector and Computer has been
installed so the seminars are conducted smoothly with computer coupled LCD.

ANNEXURE
Routine work of Department as Head of Department
As Member of the Selection Committee for the post of Assistant Professor/Equivalent
in the discipline of Postharvest Technology conducted the interviews of the
candidates during its meeting fixed on 31-07-2010 .
As member of the Selection Committee, conducted the interviews of the candidates
for the post of Senior Research Fellow under the DST Project being operated in the
Deptt. of PHT fixed on 10-02-2010.
Attended the meeting for award of fresh and re-award of University Merit Scholarship
with the Dean, COH fixed for 10-03-2010 during the Academic Session 2009-2010.
Attended the meeting on 09-09-2010 with the Director of Research regarding
revision of sale rates of the fruit products being processed in the Dept. of PHT.
Conducted the visit of Accreditation team of ICAR to the department during the in
2009 visit to the University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni. Discussed the
various courses and programmes run by the department of PHT.
Conducted the visit of Shri Ram Subhag Singh, Secretary (Horticulture), Govt. of HP
on 24th October 2009 during his visit to University of Horticulture and Forestry,
Nauni.
Conducted the visit of the members of Himachal Pradesh Council of Agriculture,
Horticulture and Forestry Education and Research under the Chairmanship of Chief
Secretary, HP Government during their meeting held in the University campus on 20 th
February 2010.
Edited one Special Issue of Natural Product Radiant published by NISCAIR, New
Delhi on Production of Wine from Non Grapes- fruits.
Appointed as Member of the Committee constituted by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor
to explore the possibilities and feasibilities for creating multiple college(s) within the
jurisdiction of the University.
Attended and participated in the State Level Shoolini Fair organized at Thodo Ground
and explained the activities of the Department to the Hon’ble Minister and Visitors by
putting exhibition on the install provided to the University on 19-06-2009.

An invited lead article on Stone Fruit Wines sent o Dr.R.K.Sharma, Sr.Dy.Director,
NHB for its presentation during the National Seminar-cum-Exhibition on Stone Fruits
held on 8-9 June, 2009 at CSK HPKV,Palampur (HP).
Imparted training to visiting team from Afghanistan to this University w.e.f. 1-15th
June, 2009 and delivered lecture on stone fruits and grape wines.
The Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor has allowed me to work as member of the Scientific
Panel entitled “Contaminants in the Food Chain of Food Safety and Standards
Authority of India, New Delhi.
A technology on ‘Production of baker’s yeast from apple pomace’ submitted for its
presentation at NRDC, Delhi during its meeting held on 16th September, 2008.
As directed by the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor attended a meeting with consultant for
the Biotech Park of HP Govt. at Shoolin Institute of Life Sciences and Business
Management, Solan on 19-02-2009.
Attended the meetings of Research and Extension council during 2010 and 2011 and
interacted with the members with respect to department of PHT and FST.

Chairman, Equal Opportunity Cell/ Nodal Officer for the welfare of the persons with
disability
The Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of this University has appointed me as Nodal Officer,
Welfare of Persons with Disability, Dr Y.S.,Parmar University of Horticulture and
Forestry, Nauni.
Identified different posts in the department where the physically handicapped persons
can work without compromising the quality of the work.
Took up the case of making ramp in the administrative building, railing in the DEE
building, identified the posts where reservation for the handicapped has been made
and the post have been filled up in the university.
Case of the scholarship to physically handicapped students being taken up.
Case of enhancing the conveyance allowance to the handicapped persons taken up
with the authorities.
Efforts are being made to set up the office of the cell under the guidance of the Dean,
college of Horticulture ,and with the cooperation of the members of the cell .

Under the welfare of unprivileged members of Society , a programme has been
formulated to impart training to the students of these categories in particulars and
students in general for preparing to NET/ARS examinations of ICAR under the

Books worth more than Rs.20,000 have also been purchased for the conduct of said
training. Lecture schedule and details of the training etc have also been
prepared .Advances have also been drawn so that the training is conducted in a proper
manner.
Establishment of fruit processing unit in the dept. Of PHT
Helped to set up and renovated the Fruit Processing Unit in the Dept.of Postharvest
Technology which has been granted licence by Fruit Product Order Authorities,
New Delhi for commercialization.
Remained Incharge of the Fruit Processing unit and started commercial production
of fruits and vegetable products.
Established and operated a community canning service (CCS) to cater to the needs
of processing products of villagers and university staff.
Fairs/Kisan mela
Participated in the Kisan Mela held on 4.12.97 in the University as Incharge of sale
unit with the help of staff sold the products prepared in our processing unit
During 1997-98, got made/replaced some new products for the exhibition. Arranged
the exhibition during visits of various he dignitaries to the campus.
During 1999-2000 got arranged exhibition on the campus or provided exhibits,
attended to the exhibition on the occasion of visit of VIPs.
Helped organized the arrangement of Kisan Mela on the campus from 9 to 10 Jan,
2000 and as in charge of sale, processed fruit products were got prepared and sold
during the Kisan Mela.
Remained incharge of sale centre during the Kisan Mela ,held on 9.1.2001
Participated and got organized as HOD, the exhibition in the Shoolini Fair on 25 to
28th June, 2004 at Solan.
The activities of the Deptt. are duly exhibited during the Shoolini Fair at Thodo
Ground, Solan w.e.f. 25-06-2010 to 27-06-2010 and explained the activities of the
Department and technologies developed to the farmers, orchardists and industrialists
for their benefits.
Departmental activities duly exhibited during the two days Kisan Mela at the
Regional Horticultural Research Station, Neri, Distt. Hamirpur on February 26-27,
2010 and all the facilities whichever is desired are duly provided for the purpose.
The representatives of Mushroom Growers Association of India, Shanti Niwas, Sunny
Side visited the department and a detailed discussions for organizing the trainings on
processing of fruits/mushroom was made. A proposal alongwith the fee structure was
also communicated to them by this Department during the month of March 2010.

In addition to the above, the Department has been associated with the Directorate of
Extension Education to conduct the various trainings organized by them time- to- time.
Court Case:
A long standing court case with the University v/s Private Agency (Ms Occeania Pvt.
Ltd., Ambala) on non supply of equipment has been decided in the favour of University on
my active participation and the supply of the equipment made to the Department.
Payment of Arrears:
On the revision of pay scales to the University Employees and its further notification
from the Comptroller, the cent-percent arrears to the Teachers as well as Class IV employees
of the Department released well in time.
Nomenclature of the Department:
On the proposal for change of nomenclature of the existing Department i.e.
Postharvest Technology to that of Food Science and Technology and proper justification
given to the Acadmic Council as well as to Board of Management, got changed the
nomenclature of the Department duly notified by the Registrar vide Notification
No.UHF.REgr./GA/5-1/(82)10/-17697-17744 dated 03-09-2010. Made efforts by proper
circulation/interaction among the concerned Departments all over the country .
Scientific Democracy:
Made efforts to provided scientific environment to the faculty of the Department
resulting increase in productivity in terms of research, teaching and extension
activities generated by them in the shape of books, journals and newspapers
articles ,awards,for wide publicity of t Made efforts to renovate the processing unit.
Already advance has been drawn and the work would start shortly.
Boiler has been got repaired in the processing unit so as to increase the efficiency of
the unit.
Hplc has been installed in the quality control laboratory and is in working order
under the project FIST.
Pulveriser has been procured , installed and is in working order. It was purchased
under MFPI project .
Automatic juice processing line has been procured and installed in the processing
unit.
Vacuum dehydrator and exhaust box have also been got procured and installed.
A freeze dryer has been purchased under the MFPI project has been purchased and
being installed in the fermentation laboratory.
A pick up van has been procured and being made as a refrigerant van for carrying out
studies on the fruit and vegetable storage and transportation.
Procured glassware, chemicals and stationery under the Horticulture Mini Mission,
ICAR.
Under the Central Assistance got chemicals and other materials for conducting the
practical examination as per the requirements of various teachers.
Summer School
Organized a summer school entitled “Advances in fruit and vegetable preservation
and processing” for the training of scientists and teachers of SAU and ICAR
institutes. It was for the first time that such a school has been organized by the
department. The trainig was organized w.e.f 25 th June to 15th July,2012 . Dr
V.K.Joshi ,was the course Director. The participants numbering 25 were from several
parts of the country. The course included both theory and practical aspects of the
subject. The course outline included postharvest losses, loss reduction technology,
handling, maturity indices, postharvest treatment, processing aspects, juice
processing, drying, extrusion cooking, osmotic dehydration, fermentation technology
for wine production, lactic fermented beverages, enzymes in food processing.
