Cisco Blade Servers Processors:

Quantity, number of cores, speed, and memory are determined by processing needs

All blades use the Virtual Interface Card (VIC) mezzanine card

Blade servers can be half width or full width Half Width requires a

single server slot (up to eight per server chassis)

Full Width requires two server chassis slots (up to four per server chassis

Virtual Interface Card (VIC) Each blade server includes a mezzanine card IO controller (Full width

blades have 2) Dual-port 10 Gigabit Ethernet connection to chassis Connects to Fabric Extenders (which are part of the blade server chassis)

Vblock Systems use the Virtual Interface Card (VIC) Provides multiple dynamically configured PCIe bus virtual interfaces Storage connects with Fibre Channel

Cisco IP Switches

Each Vblock System model includes two Cisco IP switches

Provide IP connectivity from the compute layer to the site network and storage layer

They support low latency line-rate 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) and Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE)

FCoE connectivity on up to 32 ports

A unified port expansion module provides an extra 16 ports of 10 GbE or FCoE connectivity

Ports are licensed on an on-demand basis

© 2012 VCE Company LLC, All rights reserved. GLOBAL TRAINING PRACTICE

Cisco SAN Switches SAN Switches in the aggregation layer provide Fibre Channel links

between the compute layer and the storage layer

In a unified storage configuration, this connection also supports SAN booting of the blades in the compute layer

Ports are also reserved for special Vblock System services such as SAN backup connectivity and aggregation uplinks.

Vblock System Storage: File and Block File level storage

File storage is presented to the host as a file system and accessed over an IP network

Protocols: Network File System (NFS) for Unix, Linux and

VMware Common Internet File System (CIFS) for Windows

Easy to setup and share access across multiple servers

Block level storage Storage presented to server as a LUN (Logical Unit) Typically access using Fibre Channel protocol in a

Vblock environment
