The variations are based on an unnamed Leicestershire folk

tune.

The piece aims to provide experience of registration and

performance in a variety of styles.

Theme – Presented in a hymn-like 4 part texture

Variation 1 – A dance-like movement in 2 parts, manualiter

Variation 2 – A light-hearted variation with the melody harmonised

and accompanied by delicate arabesques

Variation 3 – A lyrical aria with gentle diatonic dissonance

Variation 4 & 5 – A piquant French-style toccata, preceded by a brief

3-part fugato and episode
