Transcript of Van Norman & friends 18th Annual Production Sale Catalog
18th Annual
Welcome to the 18th Annual Van Norman and friends Production
Sale
For the last few years, this sale has focused on modifying its
selection by
decreasing breeding stock and increasing riding horses. This
purposeful change is in
response to the industry’s ever-changing needs. With that in mind,
this year, more
than ever, you are being offered a wider selection of riding horses
with exceptional
value that you won’t find on every corner. This is a ranch horse
select sale.
Our goal from the beginning has been to showcase quality animals.
We go
to great lengths to ensure that you are being presented with the
area’s best. It is
our intent to offer horses that will adhere to the best of ranch
standards. Most of
the bloodlines represented are among the very best in the industry
for ranching and
working cow horse. Many of them have been raised and trained on
local ranches
which contributes to the development of many beneficial
attributes.
If you are in the market for a good all-around ranch horse, you
have come
to the right place. If you are looking for breeding stock, be sure
to notice the jam-
packed pedigrees and the individual appeal of the horses
presented.
We invite you to tour the catalog with confidence that what you are
seeing
is a respectable product. Don’t forget to check out the web preview
that has videos,
pictures, pedigrees, and notes. And as always, if you have
questions, please feel free
to contact the consignor or the sale management. Hope you enjoy,
and please come
join us live or on the web in September!

Freckled Lil Pepto, a 2005 red roan stallion is our latest star.
“Preacher” is a really well-proportioned stallion with an amazing
temperament and oodles of cow. He is as comfortable in reined cow
horse shows as he is weaning calves in the fall or branding calves
in the spring. He was trained and shown to several victories by
Flint Lee who has to fight with Sharon and Cowboy to get him back
to prepare for show season. Both Sharon and Cowboy love to ride
him. He is that neat of a horse. Needless to say he is showing a
lot of promise as a reined cow horse, a dependable ranch horse, and
as a sire. Colts are eligible for the Nevada Stallion Stakes.

“Pistol” embodies the old chestnut, “Dynamite comes in little

in power, athletic ability, and heart. He was the Nevada Stallion
Stakes Open Snaffle Bit Champion in 2009 and won the 4-year old
event at the Harney County Fair. He was 4th in the Nevada Stallion
Stakes in 2010 and Reserve Champion Two Rein at Kalispell, MT in
2010. He is definitely making his mark in both the Shelman and
Bunch breeding programs. Standing by private treaty. His first
colt-Pepinics Lil Playgun aka Pete recently sold in the Shelman
Summer Sale for $17,000 as a five year old. Cory’s daughter Sydney
and son Cory use him to brand calves. He is passing his great

tend to be bigger than their sires.

No need to hype this pedigree. It speaks for itself. As a sire Nick
produces athletic attractive colts with lots of action and brains.
They seem to be very versatile. One of his sons is successfully
running barrels with Paty Raine in California. Casey Bieroth of
Mountain City, NV is having a lot of success in local shows on his
Nick gelding. Others are on ranch payrolls and surely earning their
keep. The oldest colts are now six so he has a long way to go. Nick
is so full of cow that to relieve his boredom away from breed- ing
season, he keeps his pen free of intruders by working the
blackbirds and ravens who foolishly invade his space. He is
affectionately referred to as “The Mustang” because of his long
mane and tail and often scruffy appearance.

This is an excellent up and coming sire out of a top producing Van
Norman bred mare and by Sophisticated Catt (a three time AQHA world
champion with lifetime earnings over $192,000 in cutting.) JP
Colonel Blackcatt is very cowy and super quick on his feet! He
possesses many substantial Colonel Freckles personas including
trainability, good bone, a nice big eye – to name a few. Plus this
guy is built to stop. He is very smooth and pretty. Ty started JP
Colonel Blackcatt and quickly decided to further his training. In
2012 the young sire was in reined cow horse training with Clayton
Edsal. He has been shown at local stock horse events with plans to
finish his training into the bridle. Now back at the ranch, the
upcoming feature horse is pulling double duty as a sire and a stock
horse. This horse doesn’t have the size to be an ideal head horse,
but no doubt has everything to make a perfect heel horse, reined
cow horse, and ranch horse.

The Van Norman Quarter Horses believes this to be one of the best
ranch horse blood- lines. The Colonel Freckles bloodlines are not
as available as they once were – but their outstanding qualities
have stood the test of time – making them more valuable than ever.
It truly is the backbone of the Van Norman Quarter Horse breeding
program. JP Rolling Thunder carries a lot of bone and muscle and is
very athletic for his size. He has a super disposition and is a
true gentleman. His offspring repeatedly reflect his easy going and
friendly disposition, combined with athletic ability and stamina.
Thunder is doing a marvelous job of perpetuating the Colonel Zippo
Pine legacy for Van Norman Quarter Horses. Year after year, return
buyers come to the sale looking for Thunder colts.

Van Norman Quarter Horses bought this horse from the Lapkes in Iowa
in 2009. He had a brief but promising career in working cow horse
and reining, accumulating 45.5 AQHA points and qualifying for the
World Show. Due to an injury, he never proceeded with his show
record. Peptos Playboy is an outstanding horse, not only on his
papers – but in the arena and on the ranch as well. Along with
using him at ranch rodeos and branding competitions, Ty also began
heading and heeling on him which he took to with no problems.
Six-year-old Anna was riding him on the ranch – now ten – she shows
him in youth stock horse classes. He is gentle, kind, easy to be
around and be- haves like a gelding. At 15.2 he is strong, cinches
deep and is stout on a rope. His first foals for the program are
just now in training with favorable results.

Van Norman Quarter Horses bought Wrangler in August 2011 from Lacey
Livestock of California. He has won over $40,000 in NRCHA, NCHA and
NRHA events. He placed 3rd and 5th at The World’s Greatest Horseman
event. He is an awesome heading horse and some of his get are doing
well in barrel racing competitions. His full brother is Starlights
Wrangler owned by Dell Hendricks – an accomplished reining
competitor. He has the size, disposition, and conformation
necessary for a good ranch horse. His first foals for this program
are on the ground, and they show his same speed and agility. He is
a proven performer in reined cow horse, cutting, and reining, as
well as a ranch sire. Van Norman Quarter Horses has been very happy
to have him. Unfortunately this past winter, we were forced to geld
him due to an injury so there will be no more Wrangler colts to
look forward to. We have kept back a number of yearlings and
weanlings for future offerings, however.

A grandson of Freckles Playboy! Here’s a colt with the kind of
pedigree that’s harder to find these days, with some older, more
classic cow horse breeding on both top and bottom. We were blessed
to have his sire for his final breeding season, and this guy is the
only stallion of the foal crop. His dam came from Bunch’s program,
by Starlite Starbrite (by Greys Starlight). He can’t help but be a
good one.

Bill Van Norman bought this mare as a yearling through the Van
Norman sale in 2002. She was started as a two year old with just 10
rides on her before she was put in the broodmare band. She has
consistently raised stud colts. Several of them are currently being
used on the ranch. The ones we have kept have a lot of travel and
are good using horses: great for ranching and roping and do- ing a
job. They are good-natured, but have a lot of go. Can’t beat them
if you have a job for them. Service sire for 2015 foal: JP Rolling

calves to yearlings. He will go any direction you might need on the

Take a look at this flashy red roan filly. The dam is nice to be
around, super, super gentle, stout and pleasant to ride. The sire
was very athletic, stout and muscular. Ty thinks she will make a
very nice all around horse – one that you will be proud to own.
