Working together, we made people from around the world feel happy and comfortable in our own home. This event helped us to strengthen our community and build strong relationships with each other, as well as the rest of the world!”

“As the dust settles from WYD, I continue to marvel at the commitment, enthusiasm and love for the Lord we share. This enriching experience allowed me to completely embody and emulate Christ’s message. As educators, our spiritual mission is to continue being role models for our students by spreading the salt to preserve and enrich their faith and shine a light to guide their way.”

Fighting uphill battle Asthma won't slow Rengifo By JASON PAUL Wed, October 29, 2003, Toronto Sun

Running long-distance races are a challenge for any athlete. But Michael Power/St. Joseph's Catholic runner Chris Rengifo has had to battle with an even tougher problem this cross-country season after developing asthma this past summer. The Grade 12 student has been one of the top middle-distance runners in the Toronto area for several years -- last year he was the metro track and field junior champion in the 800 and 1,500 metres -- but things caught up to him while training in the summer when he began to struggle with his breathing.

"I couldn't take any deep breaths," said Rengifo, 17, who first noticed it while out for a casual jog. "It was pretty hard in the summer, but I couldn't do anything about it."

After seeing a specialist, all the tests came out normal, so he has continued running without the use of any medication. "I'm trying to fight through it," said Rengifo, who has been running as a senior in cross-country events since Grade 10. "I don't go out as hard at the beginning as I used to. I go out slower and then pick up the pace so I can keep my breath."

While running "sprints" of 800 and 1,500 metres (Rengifo's specialty track events) don't pose a problem for him, the cross-country distance of seven kilometres poses a more difficult task.

At the Cardinal Carter Invitational a few weeks ago, Rengifo was running fourth in the senior boys' race but, three kilometres in, he decided to pull out but because the weather conditions were interfering with his breathing.

"He has good days and bad days," Michael Power track/cross-country coach Ed Raposo said. "He's just rounding into shape as he deals with the asthma."

Rengifo had little trouble advancing to the OFSAA cross-country championships -- this Saturday in Renfrew -- by winning the TDCAA title last Friday, beating the entire field by almost a minute in 24:44 in the 7K race.

"Tons of kids have asthma, you just have to deal with it at the elite level," said Raposo, 46, a former 2:22 marathon runner. "Depending on the change of weather, you may have to approach your race differently."

Rengifo is now the leader of the Power team after being a part of a fast group last year that won an OFSAA silver medal as a senior boys' team and also knocked off long-time power St. Michael's at the TDCAA championships.

Rengifo, who has competed at the Canadian junior and track and field championships the past year, is hoping to crack the top 10 at OFSAA with hopes it carries into his track season. "I think I have a good opportunity at coming in first in the 800 (at OFSAA)," said Rengifo, who has a personal best time of 1:56 (and 4:08 in the 1,500). "I'm trying as hard as I can this year to get faster times."
