Assembly and operating instructions “Valves”
1. General
VAG valves are designed and manufac-tured in accordance with the state-of-the-art and are operationally safe. Despite this, valves may be hazardous ifthey are not used properly or for theintended purpose.
Anybody at the user’s company who isinvolved in the assembly, operation orservicing of the valves must read andfully comprehend the operating instruc-tions (UVV, VBG1 § 14 and others). It is recommended that the user obtainswritten confirmation of this (UVV VBG1§ 7, sec. 2).The pipeline section should be depres-surised and made free of hazards beforeprotective fittings are removed or beforework is commenced on the valves; ifnecessary, reduce the drop weight. Unauthorised, incorrect and unexpectedstarting or hazardous movementscaused by stored energy (compressedair, pressurised water) must be avoided.
When using the valves, observe therecognised engineering principles, e.g.DIN standards, DVGW data sheets, VDIguidelines, VDMA uniform sheets etc.
In case of systems which require moni-toring, the laws, regulations, e.g. com-mercial regulations, accident preventionregulations, steam boiler regulations, ADdata sheets etc. are authoritative.Furthermore, the local accident preventionregulations also apply.
2. IdentificationAll valves must be identified in accor-dance with DIN EN 19 with the nominaldiameter (DN), nominal pressure (PN),body material, manufacturer symbol andif required, a flow direction arrow.
2.1 Field of applicationPlease refer to our offer papers for fieldof application and operating restrictions.
3. InstallationThe valves must be stored so that theyare dry and protected against soilingand damage.Only remove protective lids from theconnections just before installation. Thepassage must be cleaned before instal-lation and the sealing surfaces must bechecked as far as possible. In the caseof control valves and non-return valves, please note the flow direction.During installation, steps should betaken to ensure that the seals to theconnection flanges are well centred andthat the flanges of the connectingpipeline are oriented to each other inboth axial and parallel directions. Flange screws must be unscrewed in a“cross-over” manner. In the case of powder-coated valves, disks must be placed under the
connection screws to the pipe flangesfor protection purposes. When installing clamping valves VAGAREX, VAG AREX-L, VAG CEREX 200,VAG CEREX 200-L, VAG CEREX andVAG CEREX-L with sealing collars, noadditional flange sealing rings may beused.
When welding plastic valves, e.g. VAGBOLITA ball valves, please observe thespecial regulations, which will be sup-plied on request.
The pipes must be laid in a mannerwhich protects the valve bodies fromdamaging pipeline forces.
If any construction work needs to beperformed near or above the valves, thevalves must be protected.
In the case of underground installations, steps should be taken to ensure that thepipeline is bedded carefully on bothsides of the valve in order to prevent thepipe from sinking near the valve andcreating bending stress.Do not use the valve as a fixing point forthe pipeline. When systems are painted, the stems, stuffing boxes, connection plates forVAG-DUO® valves, position display andidentification signs may not be paintedover. If solvents are used for cleaning, stepsshould be taken to ensure that the sol-vent does not get into the stuffingboxes, stem seal or shaft seal orbetween the connection flanges to thepipelines as this could destroy the seals.
4. Commissioning and operationBefore commissioning new systems, inparticular after repair work, the pipe sys-tem must be rinsed whilst the valve isfully opened. It is important that thevalve materials are not corroded. Toclose, turn in a clockwise direction. The stems and actuators are designedso that the valve can be operated byone person with a hand lever, hand-wheel or operating key. Extensions toassist operation are not permitted andcan lead to damage to the valve causedby stress.
For valves with a 90° swing movement,e.g. disks, there is a limit stop on thehand lever or the gear unit. The valvemay break if force is used to continueturning. The function should be checked bymeans of opening and closing severaltimes. In case of pressure tests, theclosed valve should only be burdenedwith the nominal pressure.
In the case of warm pipelines, retightenthe lid screws and stuffing box nutsevenly after the pipeline has been heatedfor the first time.
When doing this, ensure first that thevalve can be opened by about two com-plete two turns.
In the case of electrically operatedvalves, steps should be taken to ensurethat the valves are switched as follows:
Soft sealing valves: “CLOSED” moment-dependent, “OPEN” path-dependent.
All other construction types: “CLOSED” and, “OPEN” path-dependent.
5. Dismantling
5.1 Safety informationBefore removing the whole valve fromthe pipeline or before repair and mainte-nance work on the valve itself, i.e.
– before unscrewing the body connec-tion screws – bonnet, lid, stuffing boxrest, closing plugs
– before dismantling actuators which aredirectly screwed on
the valve must be depressurised and, inthe case of warm pipelines, cooled sothat the evaporation temperature of themedium is undercut. In the case of poi-sonous media, the valve must also beemptied and vented.
5.2 ActuatorsIf actuators, which are supplied withexternal energy (electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic), need to be dismantled fromthe valve, please observe the safetyinformation in section 5.1 and turn offthe external energy source. The operat-ing and maintenance instructions of thevarious valve types must be observedduring operation and maintenance.
