Process Steps in the Automotive Industry
Press Shop In the automotive industry, the press shop is where metal sheets (plates) are turned into pressed parts such as hoods, roofs, and much more. In this process step, Schmalz vacuum tube lifters are used to place pressed parts such as cross beams, roofs, and hoods into the provided transport containers. The tube lifters are equipped with special suction cups which do not deform the components and can adapt to free-form surfaces. They are able to apply extremely high lateral forces even on oiled surfaces. This ensures flexible handling of the components in a rapid and safe manner.

Body Construction Depending on the level of automation, the body in white produced during body construction is frequently manufactured with the aid of industrial robots. Schmalz vacuum tube lifters are particularly useful in the case of a minimal level of automation, but their main application in the field of body making is as an emergency strategy. In this process step, Schmalz vacuum tube lifters are used to transfer car body parts from load carriers into specific equipment or to load welding cells.

Handling without / with minimal marks The marks left by a suction cup are dictated by its design and its material. The design affects the behavior of the suction cup when lifting and depositing a workpiece – the relative movement of the sealing lip on the glass surface. The more movement occurs, the greater the risk of marks, either due to the material itself or the environmental dirt that has settled on the suction cup. Of course, the material of the suction cup also has a huge impact on the marks that it leaves. The HT1 material from Schmalz produces excellent results in this regard – mark-free and minimal chemical fingerprint.
