Use the Present Continuous tenses effectively

Present Continuous tense

Verb Form:I + am + verb+ ingHe+ is + verb + ingShe + is + verb + ingThey + are+ verb + ingWe + are+ verb + ingPrem and Vidya+ are+ verb + ingThe motor and the engine +are + verb + ing

Present Continuous tense

Examples:1.I am reading a book.2.He is reading a book.3.She is reading a book.4.They are reading a book.5.We are reading a book.6.Prem and Vidya are reading a book.

Functions

1. To denote an action that is happening right now:

The phone is ringing.He is talking to his friend.She is cooking rice.They are working on the issue.We are playing football.I am watching Television.

2. To denote a future schedule:I am going to Delhi next month.I am meeting the client at 10 am

tomorrow.He is attending a seminar in Mumbai

next week.They are moving to Hyderabad next

year.The Government is announcing new

taxes this year.We are boarding the flight tomorrow

at 5 pm.

3. To denote happenings in the recent present , not necessarily at this very moment.

John is preparing well for his exam.I am researching on the topic.She is thinking of moving to Canada.He is working on a tough issue.The opposition is facing a tough situation.

The Indian use of the “ing” verb

Indians tend to use the present continuous tense instead of the simple present tense:

I am wanting to learn English.I want to learn English.I am having a bike.I have a bike.He is living in Bangalore.He lives in Bangalore.

Use of present continuous tense

I am needing a break.I need a break.He is wishing for as new house.He wishes for a new house.She is knowing the answer.She knows the answer.They are having many friends.They have many friends.

Questions

Are you leaving now?Is it working?Is John coming tonight?Are the students writing the test ?Are you taking your medication regularly?

Is Alice studying?

Negative questions

Are you not going to the party?Are you not staying with your parents ?

Is he not studying?Am I not singing well?

Verbs that do not take the “ing” form
