Reasons for e-Learning

- Different pre-study backgrounds

- High amount of foreign students

- Cooperative students

- High teaching load

• Pre-study Bridge Course

• Supply of electronic teaching materials for individual learning

• Improvement of teaching workflow by easing in the routine activities

7

Pre-Study Bridge Course Mathematics• Since 2003

• About 700 participants (approx. 50% of the bachelor beginners)

• Presence Phase: 4 weeks, 80 hours

• Blended Learning since 2006:

• Classes of approx. 20 participants with a tutor• Tutors use eLearning tools in their classes for demonstration• Students use eLearning tools for individual learning during the

classes• E-Learning materials and tools in Net: individual learning 24/7

Bridge Course Materials: • Printed script-book, • Online content (Moodle, MathBridge)• Online training assistant MathCoach

What is MathCoach: Features

• Automatic generation of exercises

- Incl. text assignments

- Adaptive: difficulty’s level adjustment depended on user’s learning & knowledge level

• Term processing with adequate feedback

- Right – Wrong evaluation

- Controlled through intermediate steps to final result

- Automatic generation of help texts and solution reviews

III. Using the e-Learning with MathCoach

Using the e-Learning with MathCoach

How?

• Teaching in regular classes

• e-Materials and videos as compensation of absence in class

• Blended bridge course

• Distance learning via Virtual Classroom using Adobe Connect

• Pure individual learning using online materials

Prof. Dr. B. Grabowski, Dimitri Ovrutskiy, Melanie Kaspar, Hong Phuc Bui

26

Regular Classes: Combination of MathCoach with SMART technology

Prof. Dr. B. Grabowski, Dimitri Ovrutskiy, Melanie Kaspar, Hong Phuc Bui

27

MathCoach with SMART : Adwantages

• Record of the lecture with SMART: Generation of online course “by doing”

• Export to PDF, hyperlinks stay active

• Efficient preparation of courses: Progressive incorporation of interactive MathCoach exercises, home assignments, online tests, hyperlinks, etc.

• Incorporation of audio/video (drag and drop)

• Re-usable for other classes & courses

Prof. Dr. B. Grabowski, Dimitri Ovrutskiy, Melanie Kaspar, Hong Phuc Bui

28

Example of didactic concept for regular courses

• The lecturer explains theory, shows examples

• Free training with MathCoach

• All students solve test exercises with their computers

• Statistical evaluation of the results (individual, group)

• Hyperlink to home assignment in lecture’s PDF

Prof. Dr. B. Grabowski, Dimitri Ovrutskiy, Melanie Kaspar, Hong Phuc Bui

29

Online tests and statistical evaluation

• Often used as a mid-term exam

• Online test with and without repetition

• Duration of test or begin-end time

• Anonymous, semi-anonymous, not anonymous

• Several statistic evaluation measures

Prof. Dr. B. Grabowski, Dimitri Ovrutskiy, Melanie Kaspar, Hong Phuc Bui

30

Blended Learning Concept

Combination of regular classes with dedicated time for individual training using MathCoach

• In Bridge Courses

• In regular classes (e.g., cooperative students)

Prof. Dr. B. Grabowski, Dimitri Ovrutskiy, Melanie Kaspar, Hong Phuc Bui
