INTERACTING WITH THE BBS WITHOUT OUTPOST
© Copyright 2011-2020 Santa Clara County ARES®/RACES. All rights reserved. 13
OUTPOST
• Simple text commands control the TNC– CD software = set carrier detect mode to software– MYCALL callsign = set my call sign to callsign– C callsign = connect to station callsign
• Simple text commands control the BBSmailbox– SP address = send private message to address– LA = List All messages in this area (mailbox)– R n = Read message number n
• Outpost simply automates the process of typing the commands to the TNC (to connect) and the BBS (to send/receive messages)– Watch the Outpost session window to see what it’s doing– View the Outpost transaction log later to see what it did
• Actions > View Outpost Data Directories > logs > transactionYYMMDD.log
Control with Text Commands

• Log Settings has L1 selected by default
• Select L2 for additional info
© Copyright 2011-2020 Santa Clara County ARES®/RACES. All rights reserved. 15
• Why would I want to/need to?– Outpost is not installed; no administrative access to PC– Browse the BBS to read bulletins– Gain deeper understanding of how the system works– Perform clean up, diagnostic activities to maintain BBS
• All you need is a terminal emulator program– Suggested: PuTTY (free download) https://www.putty.org/
… or just do an Internet search for “PuTTY”– But any terminal emulator will do …
• The following examples will use PuTTY– Select and copy: hightlight/select (not CTRL‐C)– Paste: Right‐click (not CTRL‐V)

FYI… Creating the Message Off‐lineJNOS Commands• The general message format is:
sp <dest_address><subject line><message line 1><message line 2>
:<message line n>/ex
• After the SP command, we know what the BBS will prompt for to complete the message.
• Create the *ENTIRE* message exchange (listed above) in notepad, highlight and copy it all, and then paste it into PuTTY at the BBS Prompt.
• For long lines in the message body, break the line at about 80 characters.• This essentially is what Outpost does.
What would you do differently when creating a message with the Send Copy Command?

READING BULLETINS ON JNOS
© Copyright 2011-2020 Santa Clara County ARES®/RACES. All rights reserved. 58
Bulletin ReviewBulletins• Bulletins are messages intended for a broad audience• The SCCo BBSs support two types of bulletins:
– Notices are a special type of bulletin specific to Santa Clara County • Only distributed to SCCo BBSs (W*XSC)• SCCo uses 3 special categories for specific content
– General Bulletins are globally compatible, used for everything else• User‐defined category (e.g.: “equake”, “ARES”) identifies content• User‐defined distribution controls how widely it is distributed (e.g.: “XSC”,
“BAY”, “NCA”, etc.).
• Regardless of the bulletin type, when configured in Outpost, Outpost will automatically download them
59© Copyright 2011-2020 Santa Clara County ARES®/RACES. All rights reserved.
SCCo RACESBulletin Board System
• SCCo ARES/RACES has three special notice categories:– xscperm
• Used for notices that do not expire• examples: standard county procedures
– xscevent• Notices posted here automatically expire after a full calendar day
• examples: Drills, public service events, incidents, other activations
– xsctest• Notices posted here automatically expire after a full calendar day• Available for testing by any user
• Advantages– Limits on‐air time required to check notices– Focuses readership so important information is not missed– Automates expiration of old news– Outpost only downloads a given notice once
SCCo Notice AreasBulletins

General Bulletins OverviewBulletins• Bulletins are messages that are intended for broad readership• Bulletins content varies from amber alerts and earthquake
reports to jokes and recipes• Bulletin sender controls how widely the bulletin is distributed
– Can be as narrow as “local” (this BBS only)– Can be as wide as “ww” (worldwide)!
• In JNOS, bulletins are sorted into shared areas (mailboxes) for easier reading
61© Copyright 2011-2020 Santa Clara County ARES®/RACES. All rights reserved.
General Bulletins – Why Do They Matter? Bulletins• Standard way to distribute information between BBSs of all
types throughout the world• Use them for fun or for emergency communications• Use them for distributing information to broader areas:
– Santa Clara County– San Francisco Bay area– Northern California– All California– And wider …
• Example:– During the 2009 cable cut, information about anticipated service
restoration times were distributed via bulletins by a ham who had information from the telecom carrier
62© Copyright 2011-2020 Santa Clara County ARES®/RACES. All rights reserved.
• Address format: category@distribution• Distribution
– A six‐character or shorter keyword which defines how widely the bulletin will be distributed
– Sender picks from a pre‐defined list– Acceptable distributions:
• local Local BBS only• xsc XSC Operational Area (Santa Clara County)• bay San Francisco and Monterey Bay area• nca No. California (generally north of the Tahachapi Mountains)• ca California• wusa Western USA (generally, West of the Mississippi River)• usa United States of America• noam North America (Canada, USA, Mexico, …)• ww worldwide
General Bulletin AddressesBulletins
63© Copyright 2011-2020 Santa Clara County ARES®/RACES. All rights reserved.
• Address format: category@distribution• Category:
– A six‐character or shorter description of the main topic of the bulletin. – Sender picks the category based on the contents of the bulletin– Example categories:
• amber – Amber alerts• equake – Earthquake reports• flood – Flood reports• swpc – Space Weather Prediction Center• mtv, cup, sjc, etc. – City bulletins• humor or humour – Jokes, stories, etc.
– Any category works on our SCCo BBSs because we sort bulletins by distribution, not category

bulletin retrieval as follows:– First, explore bulletin areas manually
– NEVER retrieve General Bulletins without filters… lots of bulletins will tie up the channel!
– Then, in Outpost, go to Settings > BBS, Retrieving Tab
– Under Custom Retrieval, add the Area command, and the List Filtered (L>) Command, like “L> equake”.
– You can add more List Filtered commands under one Area command.
– Multiple combinations of Area / Filtered List commands can be defined.
– When done, either remove these commands or create a copy of this BBS for your personal use.

72© Copyright 2011-2020 Santa Clara County ARES®/RACES. All rights reserved.
Submitted for your approval…• You just got to the EOC (not yours) to take over as
Packet Operator. This is great… Your first MAC assignment!• As you enter, the last shift Packet Op rushes past you saying…
“there’s a stack of ICS213’s on the desk to be sent!”• At least you won’t be bored.
• Over your shoulder, you hear him yell back… “Oh yeah, I could never get Outpost to work since IT installed the latest version… and they just left.”
• The PC is running; you click the Outpost icon… Error; you’ve seen this before… the dreaded permissions problem
• OK, deep breaths. You know what to do, right?

No Outpost, now what?

either with Outpost or standalone for form‐based messages– Found in C:\PackItForms\Outpost\SCCo– Look for the file browse.cmd
Manual PackItForm messagesHow to create messages1. Develop your manual Message ID List2. Manually run PackItForms with the browse.cmd3. Fill in the form as usual. Don’t forget the message ID4. Recover the formatted message text5. Save the message first6. Use PuTTY to Send PackItForm

– Use the ‘M’ suffix to indicate this is a Manual message and not conflict with Outpost’s numbering
• When you use one, cross it out.
2. Manually run PackItForms• Find and run the browse.cmd. This will load the manual
PackItForm page (found in C:\PackItForms\Outpost\SCCo)
• From here, you can either create a new message or load a received message

– You have copy for your records.– You can save all your messages before sending them.– Avoids having to re‐enter the message is something goes wrong.
• Where you save the message is up to you. But:– If this is your PC, save them anywhere as long as you can find them again.– If this is a shared/single‐login PC, agree on a common location.– If this is a shared/multi‐login PC, create a directory on the C: Drive.
• Suggestions:– Create your directory structure as follows, such as:
• C:\MyMessages• C:\MyMessages\Pending• C:\MyMessages\Sent• C:\MyMessages\Received
– This ensures everyone can always get them regardless of the login.

• You’ve been dispatched by the Town of Testina EOC to provide communications for a shelter.– You were assigned a tactical call prior to the class (this will be one of
your city’s extra tactical calls) – Operating instructions will be distributed to the XSCEVENT notice area
• You arrive at the “shelter”, start setting up, and discover that Outpost on the PC they handed to you does not work! Looks like you need to do all packet operations manually
• Let’s get to work …
