From the Desk of Rabbi Bruce Benson Ah. We've made it to summer. and yet, there's no rest for the weary... So much to do. The planning for next season is already in full swing. Our Ohel Moed students just had their end of year party and get some time off. Our teachers have already begun to plan with me for next year and there are plans for some very ex-citing things! If you happen to know Jewish families looking for a temple or religious instruction for their kids, please let them know we exist... I'm anxiously getting ready to leave with a number of congregants for a remarkable trip to Eastern Europe to visit mul-tiple Holocaust sites including Auschwitz, Dachau, the Warsaw ghetto (where we will be celebrating Shabbat) and other places as well. We will be bringing back films of these most unique and extraordinary services and visits and will look forward to sharing them with you. In an effort to reach out to the broader community, we will be holding a few Shabbat services elsewhere over the summer. On Friday July 19, we will hold Shabbat services at the Aycock celebration center at Tradition. Please join us there as we reach out to the new and relocated members of our community and encourage them to feel comfortable enough to join us here in membership. Please make every effort to attend to share our spirit with those who perhaps will consider joining our fam-ily. We will do the same thing again in August, but please don't wait. Adult Ed is looking at a wonderful schedule for next year’s offerings as well as the continued Torah study classes led by Dr. Larry Giltman. We can, and will, grow and become an even more alive and vibrant community in the coming year. In the current world we live in, hate, division and unkindness abound from all sides. Much of this hate is again aimed towards the Jews. In spite of this we MUST act as Jews have for centuries: with kindness, mercy, understanding and peace but certainly with an eye towards enhanced security. It IS for us to see ourselves in the plight of others and to do our part to not stand in the way. Let us work at strengthening our commitment to living as Jews as the Torah says: " you were also strangers in a strange land. Never forget". We now, in America, have the ability to pay back the kindnesses shown to us over centuries and remember, even if it wasn't fully kindness, at least they stayed out of the way for us to raise ourselves up. It is our job as Jews. I hope to see each of you over the summer and to be able to share stories of our visit to some of the many sites that are locked into our collective memory as Jews. Have a wonderful summer. Rabbi B.

The President‟s Communication Corner ……………… June seems to be an “in-between” month. We are in-between the end of the school year and prepara-
tions for the High Holidays. (Yes, preparations begin during the summer.)
We wish our Ohel Moed students and teachers a happy and safe vacation. Thank you to Rhoda Can-
tor and Maddie Prince, our instructors, for their dedication and to Debra Roth for coordinating the extracur-
ricular activities for the students and youth group. The smiles on the students and their parents speak for
themselves.
The Board of Directors is transitioning from one set of members to the next with Dorothy Janin, Sue
Schwartz, and Ruth Siegel stepping down at the end of this month. The time they have given is greatly ap-
preciated, and their thoughts and ideas are always welcome.
So as this (fiscal) year ends, we take a breath and prepare to “hit the ground running” ready to plan
for the next school year and the High Holidays.
June may be an “in-between” month, but it is not a “do nothing” month. There is still plenty to do.
So look through the Shofar and check your emails to keep updated about our TBEI happenings.
~Tobi

BROTHERHOOD NEWS:
The Brotherhood's two major events in May, the Yom HaShoah memorial candle/prayer distribution and the Mother's Day luncheon, were quite successful; congre-gants who participated expressed appreciation, and both events also raised money for Brotherhood activities. The 2019-2020 Brotherhood board takes office on July 1, and we want to thank departing board member Rich Levine for his service. We also have one at-large position on the Brotherhood board still open; if any Brotherhood members are interested in serving in this important capacity, please contact Ellis Bromberg (ellisbromberg@gmail.com) as soon as possible. The board will be meet-ing through the summer to consider some new activities for the group in the coming year, and the next Brotherhood general meeting will be in September. Enjoy your summer! -Ellis Bromberg , Acting President

Our Monthly TBEI Library Book Review……………….by Sheilah Korinow
We have a book in our library which combines art and stories. Put these two
together and you have both a beautiful and meaningful book. It's name is The
Jewish Spirit - a Celebration in Stories and Art, edited by Ellen Frankel.
The very first thing you should do is read the Introduction. It talks about
stories - that they "transport us to the outer reaches of our imagination,
mark out the beginning and end of human time, explain the world to us, and
reassure us with visions of justice and order. Stories dam the rushing flow of our lives so that they
seem to us inextricably linked chains of lakes, rivers, and waterfalls, rather than untidy bogs." The
Introduction also tells us that "A people's tales are its memory, its conscience, the imaginative
channel to its place in the world." We might ask; What characterizes a Jewish tale? Not language
and not place, "but its special point of view, a paradoxical blend of resignation and optimism."
Read the rest of the Introduction to find out special techniques Jewish storytellers use to tell their
tales, what Jewish stories speak about, the types of tales - oral and then written down, and those
that originally appear as a written tale. The Jewish Spirit is the first collection of Jewish stories or-
ganized according to phases of the life cycle - such as stories about families, marriage, the com-
munity, anti-Semitism, and wisdom and old age. You will notice the multicultural nature of the
stories. This book also includes some of the classics of the modern short story from authors such
as : Sholem Aleichem, Franz Kafka, Theodor Herzl, S.Y. Agnon, and Bernard Malamud to name
only a few.
The wide range of art is discussed in the Introduction. We are told that the art pieces in the book
do not illustrate or explain the stories, but tell their own stories.
The Table of Contents divides the stories into seven topics: Beginnings, Coming of Age, Family,
Marriage, Community, In the Heart of Wisdom, and the End of Days. It is life - from the begin-
ning until the end.
What are some examples in this book? One story is an Iraqi folktale, "The Clever Wife" who
thinks of a way to survive her husband's rule and outsmarts him in the end. From Traditional
Midrash, there is "The Most Precious Thing in the World" - a heartwarming and meaningful story
that you will enjoy. Then there is a story by Martin Buber called "The Bird's Nest." which makes
us think a little bit about patience and what may happen without it. I could go on and on, but there
are so many stories - 58 in all, you'll have to check them out for yourself. Most stories are short -
only one to three pages, and each one is an easy read. It's hoped that you will sit and think after
each one! As the editor wrote: "How magical are stories!"
For those of you who enjoy looking at art, you're in for a treat. Even though each piece does not
specifically relate to the story on pages surrounding it, somehow the editor finds a way to make it
feel like it belongs there. Because of the variety of art pieces that appear in the book, it is a wel-
come change of having art all of one style. Enjoy the assortment!
I happen to enjoy both artwork and stories. Some of you might just like only one. You need not
like both to enjoy this book. However, appreciating both is like hitting the jackpot!
What does this book hold for us? Ms. Frankel wrote that these tales "teach each generation how
to live and what to believe, whom to trust and whom to fear, when to laugh and why to cling to
fast to hope." I know you will value this book and all that it holds.
In order to check this book out, go to the file cabinet located to the right side of the room in the
corner as soon as you enter. Then, on top of the cabinet you will find the book with a slip of paper
between its pages. Fill it out and place the slip of paper in the small wooden box on top of that
cabinet. When you return the book, just leave it on top of the file cabinet where you originally
found it.
