Introduction

• The United NationsIndustrial DevelopmentOrganization (UNIDO) isa specialized agency inthe United Nationssystem, headquartered inViena , Austria.

Primary Objective

• The Organization'sprimary objective is thepromotion andacceleration of industrialdevelopment indeveloping countries andcountries with economiesin transition and thepromotion of internationalindustrial cooperation.

Current status

• As of 1 January 2014, 171 states are members ofUNIDO. The organization employs some 670 staff atHeadquarters and in field representations in about 80countries, and draws on the services of some 2,800international and national experts (approx. 50% fromdeveloping countries) annually, who work in projectassignments throughout the world.

• The estimated total volume of UNIDO operations forthe biennium 2012–2013 is €460 million, the value oftechnical cooperation delivery in 2012 amounted to$189.2 million.

Primary Objective

• The Organization works towards improvingthe quality of life of the world's poor bydrawing on its combined global resources andexpertise in the following three interrelatedthematic areas:

– Poverty reduction through productive activities;

– Trade capacity-building; and

– Energy and environment.

Poverty reduction through productive activities

• UNIDO's services thereforefocus on encouraging thecreation of decentemployment and income toovercome poverty. Now,Theseservices are customized fordeveloping countries andrange from industrial policyadvice to entrepreneurshipand SME development, andfrom investment andtechnology promotion to theprovision of rural energy forproductive uses.

Trade capacity-building

• UNIDO is one of the largestproviders of trade-relateddevelopment services,offering focused and neutraladvice and technicalcooperation in the areas ofcompetitiveness, industrialmodernization andupgrading, compliance withinternational tradestandards, testing methodsand metrology.

Energy and environment

• UNIDO promotessustainable patterns ofindustrial consumption andproduction to de-link theprocesses of economicgrowth and environmentaldegradation. UNIDO is aleading provider of servicesfor improved industrialenergy efficiency and thepromotion of renewablesources of energy.
