Islam and WomenBefore Islam, positions of women in the

area varied. In most cases, women could not own

property and had to follow their male guardian (husband or father).

In some cases, tribes unwanted daughters would simply be killed.

ISLAM

The Quran stated that all people, men and women, were equal in the eyes of god.

Muslims believed that women should, and can, own businesses, inherit property, and receive an education (equal to men.)

Muslim women were also allowed to refuse a marriage offer…early Arabic women were not.

The Quran believes that women must dress modestly.

ISLAM

The current day image of Muslim veiled women came through cultural diffusion.

Persian customs veiled and covered their women and even kept them in separate rooms.

This is where the veiled custom originated, not from the Muslim religion.
