The First Conditional

• Form: If + Present tense ... Will (‘ll) + v. infinitive

• Use: It expresses a situation that it is certain or likely to happen in the future

▫ EXAMPLES: If you run, you will catch the bus You will be late at school if you don’t get up now If Michael goes to the gym, he will get fit I won’t buy an IPhone if it’s too expensive

• Up to now, we have seen the O and the First Conditional. Which Conditional is missing?

The Second Conditional

• Form: If + v. Past Simple... Would (‘d) + v. infinitive

• Use: It expresses unreal, untrue, impossible or unlikely situations in the present

▫ EXAMPLES: If I had more time, I would travel / I would travel if I had more

time*1 If I/he were famous, I/he would meet my/his favourite music band *2 If I were you, I wouldn’t cut my hair. It looks good the way it is. *3 If David had a better sense of humour, he would have more luck

with his love relationships

*1 Note: Use a comma when the ‘if’ clause comes first. *2 Note: When you use a form of ‘be’ to state a condition, you must use ‘were’ for all

persons.*3 Note: We often give advice using ‘If I were you...’
