Topic Outline• MUST know chemical nomenclature!!!• Acid/base Definitions and Properties (19.1)• Types of Chemical Reactions (11.2)• Balancing Equations (11.1)• Parts of a Chemical Equation (11.1)• Factors Affecting Reaction Rates (18.1)
Titration
• Titration Video
• Titrations are used to determine the concentration of an unknown acid or base
Biological Use of Acids and Bases
• How Anatacids Work
• Antacids are used to treat heartburn
Acid/Base Chemistry
• Play a large role in biological systems
• Acids – Produce protons (H1+ or H3O1+)
• Base – Produce hydroxide ions (OH1-)
Properties of Acids
• EX: Acetic Acid, Sulfuric Acid, Hydrochloric Acid, Carbonic acid
• Tart or Sour Taste• Electrolytes – conduct electricity– Strength depends on the acid
• React with metals to produce H2
Properties of Bases
• EX: Ammonia, soap, bleach, antacids• Bitter Taste• Feels slippery• Electrolytes – conduct electricity– Strength depends on the acid
• Stomach Acid and Milk of Magnesia – Magnesium hydroxide in water
Neutralization
• HCl + NaOH NaCl + H2O
• Acid + Base Water + Salt
• Neutralization Reaction – acids can cancel out bases
Strength of an Acid or Base
• The strength depends on the amount of H1+ ions in solution
• This is called pH scale
• Works by a power of 10
Indicator
• Weak acids or bases
• They change color at a certain pH
• Indicate the change from acidic to basic
• Phenolphthalein changes form colorless to deep pink as it goes acidic to basic
