Plane:  One of the basic undefined

terms of geometry. A plane goes on

forever in all directions (in two-

dimensions) and is "flat" (i.e., it has

no thickness).

Line Segment:  The part of a line

between two points on the line.

Sometimes referred to as a segment.

Point:  A point has no length, width, or

Endpoint:  The point at an end of

a line segment or ray.

Intersection: The point at which

two or more lines, rays, or line

segments meet or cross.

Ray:  A ray begins at a

point and goes on forever

in one direction.

Angle:  Region between

two rays or the amount of

rotation about a fixed

point.

Parallel Lines:  Two lines that

lie in the same plane and they

do not intersect (cross) and

would not ever cross if they were

extended (railroad tracks).

Perpendicular Lines:

 Two lines, rays or line

segments that meet or

cross at a right angle.

Corresponding Angles:

 Angles that have the same

relative positions in

geometric figures.

Corresponding Sides:

 Sides that have the same

relative positions in

geometric figures.

Congruent:  Having the same

size, shape and measure.

Transformation:  The

mapping, or movement, of all

the points of a figure in a plane

according to a common

operation.

Translation:  A transformation

that "slides" each point of a

figure the same distance in the

same direction.

Reflection:  A

transformation that "flips"

a figure over a mirror or

reflection line.

Reflection Line:  A line that acts

as a mirror in the form of a

perpendicular bisector so that

corresponding points are the

same distance from the mirror.

Rotation:  A transformation

that turns a figure about a fixed

point at a given angle and a

given direction.

Bisector of a line:  the straight

line or ray that divides a line

segment or angle into two

congruent segments.

Angle of Rotation:  The

number of degrees that a

figure is rotated about a

fixed point.

Coincide: To occupy

the same position in

space; correspond

exactly or be identical.

Skew: Lines not in a

plane that don’t meet.

Right Angle: An angle

that measures 90°.

Obtuse Angle: An angle

that measures more than

90° but less than 180 °.

Acute Angle: An

angle that measures

less than 90°.

Vertex: a point at which

two or more sides or

edges of a geometric

figure meet.

Dilation: a change in the

size of an object without

changing the shape.

Similar: Figures that

have the same shape.

Scale factor: the ratio of the

lengths of corresponding

sides in similar figures.

Supplementary angles – Two angles whose measures, when added together, equal 180 degrees.
