Cells and Tissues

Amy J. Hilbelink, Ph.D.

The 3 main parts of a cell

Plasma membrane Phospholipid framework

Cytoplasm Table 3-1, list of organelles

Nucleus Controls cell reproduction (mitosis)

Structure of plasma membrane

What is the function of the cell membrane?

Organelles – how did you do?

Ribosomes = protein synthesis ER = smooth (synthesizes lipids); rough (transports

proteins). Golgi = processes and packages from ER Mitochondria = powerhouse Lysosome = digestive system Centrioles= cell reproduction Cilia= move substances along surface Nucleus= dictates protein synthesis Nucleolus = formation of ribosomes

A question?

Do substances get through a cell membrane?

Let’s discuss how!

Passive transport processes

Active transport processes

Primary passive transport

Diffusion- dissolving tablet Osmosis – water movement from higher

volume to lower via semi-permeable membrane (dialysis)

Filtration – hydrostatic pressure (down a gradient)

None requires ATP energy!

What is this an example of ?

What is this an example of ?

What is this an example of ?

Active transport

Ion pumps = lower to higher concentration (up a concentration gradient) with ATP

Phagocytosis= “to eat” ;cell membrane forms pocket with ATP

Pinocytosis = “drink” ;similar to phagocytosis, but a pocket of protoplasm forms around material then pinches off inside cell, with ATP

Any questions”

Active vs. Passive transport?

Cell Reproduction and heredity

All human cells that reproduce, do so by a process called_________?

Stages of mitosis

4 major types of tissues

Epithelial Connective Muscular Nervous

Epithelial cell shapes

A question?

What is the most abundant tissue in the body?

Answer

Connective tissue ! Table 3-8.

Areolar connective tissue Adipose or fat Fibrous connective tissue Bone Cartilage Blood Hematopoietic tissue

Muscle Tissue

What are examples of each type? Are they voluntary or involuntary?

Skeletal Cardiac Smooth

Muscle Tissue

These are examples of each?

Skeletal Voluntary, and attached to bone

Cardiac Involuntary, and make up walls of heart

Smooth Involuntary, and found in digestive tract, blood

vessels and respiratory system.

What type of muscle tissue?

What type of muscle tissue?

What type of muscle tissue?

Nervous Tissue

Function = communication

Structures Nerve cells = neurons Glia = supporting cells Cell body = made of axon and dendrites
