I.  By 1914 not only Europe was at war: A.  All European colonies in Africa & Asia now join the

fight B.  Imperialism and Alliances led this conflict to become a

World War I Military Technologies

I.  During World War I the world was introduced to new industrial technologies designed for war

II.  The industrialization of the world led to new military technologies that allowed armies to become more deadly

III.  New military technologies include: A.  Machine guns, tanks, airplanes, chemical weapons,

artillery

Trench Warfare I.  By 1915 the Allies and Central powers had both

dug deep trenches for protection

II.  The area between the trenches became known as “no man’s land”

A.  Neither side controlled it B.  Full of barbed wire, causalities, shell craters

III.  Soldiers would leave their trenches and rush to the enemy lines in hopes of taking control of their trenches

III.  American banks gave loans to Allies IV.  The U.S.A. is supporting the Allies without technically

Cause #4 The Zimmerman Note (1917)

I.  British government intercepts a secret message sent from Germany to the Mexican government

II.  The Telegram stated Germany would continue unrestricted

submarine warfare on the U.S.A. III.  The telegram also proposed an alliance between Germany

and Mexico A.  If Mexico attacked the United States Germany promises to

help Mexico fight the U.S.A. B.  Germany would help Mexico get the land they lost to the

United States back C.  Americans were incredibly upset that Germany was going

behind our back to get Mexico to attack the USA

U.S.A. Declares War I.  April 2, 1917 President Wilson addresses Congress and

asks for a declaration of War against Germany A.  Unrestricted submarine warfare, Breaking of Sussex Pledge,

II.  April 6, 1917 U.S.A. officially declares war on Germany

III.  December 7, 1917 U.S.A. also declares war on Austria-Hungary

IV.  The U.S.A. is officially joining World War I on the side of the Allies
