COMMUNICATION TO AND FROM SCHOOL IN 2020
Successful communication between school and home is essential. There are several ways that you can keep updated, provide feedback and interact with the school.
1. The school’s main line of communication is through our website:
https://lakecathie-p.schools.nsw.gov.au/
The website should be the first place that you go to find information about Lake Cathie Public School or events taking place. The school newsletter is located here as well as upcoming dates and the payments portal.
2. The Sentral Parent Portal and free app has information specific to your child as well as information about school events and access to the newsletter and permission notes. Future and previous absences can also be entered along with change of details. We highly recommend that you download the app to be kept updated regularly. For information on how to access the parent portal and app please contact the school office. Log in to the parent portal https://web1.lakecathie-p.schools.nsw.edu.au/portal/login
3. The newsletter is available every fortnight and is sent to families via email but is also available on the school website and Sentral Parent Portal and Sentral for parents app. A lot of information to families is communicated through the school newsletter and we ask that you read it through every fortnight to be kept up to date on school events and programs. Back issues of the newsletter are also kept on the website and on the portal and app.
4. The school currently has a closed Facebook group that is used for sharing, celebrating and sending quick reminders or alerts to families. Please search for “Lake Cathie Public School” and request to join the group. From 2020, we ask that all families check the website or the newsletter before posting queries about school events or organisation as we endeavour to cover all of these details in the newsletter or on the website. We aim to focus our Facebook group on celebrating aspects of the school and pushing out reminders or alerts. Positive comments are always welcome and encouraged but we request that any concerns, feedback or questions specific about your child, are directed to your child’s classroom teacher, a member of the school executive or the front office.

A VERY WARM WELCOME
Lake Cathie Public School welcomed the 2020 kindergarten students to our fabulous school today. It is great to have all of our students now with 316 students enrolled from Kindergarten to Year 6. We welcome 8 new students from Year 1 – Year 6 and 44 new kindergarten students.
On Tuesday last week, we had the first 2020 “Baggy Blue” hat ceremony where every new student was presented with their new school hat in front of very proud parents. We also had the second ceremony today where our kindergarten students received their Baggy Blues.
We welcome a new staff member Mrs Bonny Abramowicz who will add to the already positive programs within our school and further develop the great reputation we have built in our community.
We welcome back Mrs Egan and Mrs McCleary and also hope Mrs Cowan is enjoying her time with her new baby, Rosie.
CLASS FORMATION
Classes were formed last Friday.
Please encourage the positive learning and social journey of your children by being supportive and respectful when they name their class for 2020 this afternoon.
Our staff have deliberated the choices for classes and teachers very carefully for your children. Primarily, choices are based on learning needs first and then on friendship groups where appropriate. We even consider if reliance on a close friend is the best learning choice for a class placement. Your reaction to their news is very important as it also supports the professional judgements we as a staff have made to cater for the needs of all of our students. Please, let us work together with mutual support as adults to positively nurture the growth of our children in our community.
Thank you for supporting your school and your dedicated staff at Lake Cathie Public School.
INTERVIEWS AND MEETINGS
Teachers will offer formal interviews twice throughout the year. Our first interview period is set for later in Term 1. Further information about interviews will be available in the coming weeks.
At times, you may need to speak with your child’s teacher. ‘Pop in’ visits to teachers may not always be suitable before or after school so appointments can be made via the front office or an email can be sent to the school. Teachers may not respond to you on the same day but will endeavour to follow up with your request within 1-3 school days. Please call the school office if your message is urgent so that teachers can follow up.
P&C MEETING – TUESDAY 11 FEBRUARY 2020, 6.30PM
Please consider making a valuable contribution to your child’s school by becoming involved in the P&C. We’d love to see you there.
The minutes are included in this newsletter from the previous meeting and any agenda items to be included in the next meeting should be forwarded to the school office before Friday 7 February, 2020.
KISS AND DROP
The area outside the library and kindergarten rooms is a designated ‘Kiss and Drop’ area. This is the side of the internal road, closest to the classrooms. The ‘Kiss and Drop’ area is a 5 minute drop off area designed to have a movement of traffic continually. If you would prefer to spend a few minutes with your child in the playground or talking to other parents, we would greatly appreciate you securing a parking spot on the south side of the long parking area or on the grass overflow near the bus bay.
* Please remember to always enter the school via the walkway near the Kindergarten rooms and toilet block.
* Please do not stop or park on the crossing as it blocks the safe crossing area for pedestrians.
* Please do not walk up through the bus bay as we insist that these areas are unsafe for pedestrians.
* Please do not drive into the staff parking area to drop off children as this area is also an unsafe area for pedestrians.
We would like to remind you of road safety. Parents and students should always use the pedestrian crossings and while driving within the school zone, please drive slowly and be aware of pedestrians.
SWIMMING CARNIVAL
Please join us on Thursday 6 February at Wauchope pool for our annual swimming carnival. Parent helpers will be greatly appreciated and the kids always love the support of their families. Permission notes have been sent home and are due back with payment by Tuesday 4 February.
ADDITIONAL BUS PASS INFORMATION
All students K-2 are entitled to a bus pass irrespective of their address. Students from Year 3 – Year 6, by the current regulations, need to live outside the 1.6km radius of the school to be entitled to free bus travel.
As our school has no safe pedestrian or bike access, parents can appeal the decision of a rejected application. Please make these details known when you make a second application. We have a photo of our school entrance, which may be required.
In the meantime, Transport NSW have instructed us that there is a grace period where students can catch the bus without a pass as long as they are wearing their uniform.
PARENT INFORMATION SESSION
Wednesday 19 February 5.00pm 1F 1W 2HB 2HC 2K (2/3K) 6.00pm 3K (2/3K) 3P 3/4A 4H 5D 5M 6W
Kindergarten session will be held on a date to be confirmed.
ABSENCES FROM SCHOOL
Attendance at school is compulsory by law. If students are absent from school, parents are required to provide an acceptable reason in writing within seven days. Rolls are official documents and will remain in school archives for a significant number of years. They are legal documents that can be subpoenaed by courts of law. Please make sure you write a note, use the Lake Cathie Sentral Parent Portal App or reply to the SMS to let the school know why your child has been absent. Verbal notification to your child’s teacher before or after school is not sufficient, especially when they may be supervising bus loading etc.

RED HEART DAY
We are supporting Wear Red Day at Lake Cathie Public School. As we have a few students very close to our hearts with significant heart conditions at our school we will raise money on Friday 14 February to support research into heart disease. Everyone is encouraged to wear RED on this day and donate gold coins to make a huge heart in our playground.
LAKE CATHIE PUBLIC SCHOOL SWIM CAPS
The school has available for purchase swim caps with the school logo. These can be purchased through the office up until Thursday 6 February (school swimming carnival), then through the uniform shop. Cost $8.00 each. Order form attached.

NON-COMPULSORY SCHOOL CONTRIBUTIONS
*Minimum suggested by the Department of Education
1 Child $45.00* 2 Children $80.00
3 Children $100.00
These vital funds help our school meet large budgeting requirements each and every year.
Thank you for your assistance in this area.
STUDENT RESOURCES
After accessing what is provided to students to assist with the wonderful programs we have in place the Learning Resource Fee for 2020 has been set at $50.00 per student.
This fee covers Learning and Support resources including but not limited to: exercise books, art supplies, photocopying, subscriptions to programs such as PM Readers, Touch Typing Tools, Ipad Apps, technology maintenance (technology used to replace text books) and robotic resources.
Kindergarten receive a stylus and headset when the Learning Resource fee is received. Kindergarten also receive all their stationery needs (except for gluesticks) These fees will be invoiced in the coming weeks.
MONEY HANDLING AT LAKE CATHIE PUBLIC SCHOOL
EFTPOS is available in the office for payments. In order to keep bank fees at a minimum, a $10.00 minimum payment has been set for both EFTPOS and Parent Online Payments (POP).
Cash will be accepted in all situations however the security of large amounts of cash in your child’s bag can be a risk.
**Any amounts being forwarded to the school under $10.00 should be placed in an envelope or a plastic zip locked bag clearly stating child’s name, amount and description of what the payment is for. This allows for the payment to be quickly processed and a receipt sent home with your child, usually the same day.
MAKE ONLINE PAYMENTS (PARENT ONLINE PAYMENTS – “POP”)
It is also possible for parents to make online payments to the school for amounts owing for students, via a secure payment page hosted by Westpac. Payments can be made using either a Visa or MasterCard credit or debit card. The payment page is accessed on the Lake Cathie Public School Website by selecting $ Make a payment.
Items that can be paid include voluntary school contributions, subject contributions, excursions, sales to students and creative and practical arts activities (these include band, drama and dance).
There is also a category called Other. This is to cover items not covered in the previous headings. Other can be used to make a complete payment of a school invoice.
When you access the $ Make a payment you must enter:
• the student’s name, and class and reference number OR
• the student’s name, and date of birth.
These details are entered each time you make a payment as student information is not held within the payment system.
This is a secure payment system hosted by Westpac to ensure that your credit / debit card details are captured in a secure manner, these details are not passed back to the school.
Details of the payments are passed daily to the school where they will be receipted against your child’s account. As a receipt has been issued from the payment page a further receipt will not be issued by the school. You have the ability to check and change any details of the payment before the payment is processed. Receipts can be emailed and / or printed.
For any enquiries regarding the Online Payment process please contact the office.

ANAPHYLAXIS – SEVERE ALLERGIC REACTION
At Lake Cathie Public School we would ask families not to bring nuts or nut products to the school site or to school activities. We have already identified a number of our students who are allergic to nuts and nut products, some who have an anaphylactic reaction.
While this is an acceptable harm minimisation strategy, it is never possible to guarantee a school site is completely nut free.
We have auto injector adrenaline devices (Epi pens) readily accessible when the need arises. Students who have a known anaphylactic reaction to allergens are required to provide an Anaphylaxis plan from their doctor as well as providing the school with an up-to-date adrenaline auto- injector pen. These will follow students on any excursions or sporting event outside the school.
ASTHMA
If your child suffers from Asthma, the school requires an Asthma Action Plan from your GP. This is a legal requirement to stay with an up-to-date Asthma inhaler or equivalent that will be available in the Sick Bay in case of emergency.
A REMINDER TO PARENTS TO NOTIFY THE SCHOOL ABOUT YOUR CHILD’S HEALTH
We welcome information from parents about your child’s health, even if you are not requesting specific support from our school. Our school asks for medical information when you enrol your child. It is also important that you let us know if your child’s health care needs change or if a new health condition develops.
Information about allergies, medical conditions such as asthma and diabetes and other health care related issues (including prior conditions and medical procedures in the last 12 months) should be provided to the school by parents. Please provide this information in writing to the principal. This will greatly assist our school in planning to support your child’s ongoing health and wellbeing.
Please also remember to notify staff in the school office of any changes to your contact details or to the contact details of other people nominated as emergency contacts.
We appreciate your assistance in this regard and assure you that any information you provide the school will be stored securely and will only be used or disclosed in order to support your son or daughter’s health needs or as otherwise required by law.
VOLUNTEER TUTOR PROGRAM
We are looking for people interested to volunteer as a tutor to assist the learning of a child at our school once per week for about 30-40 minutes. Working with Children Checks for volunteers will need to be completed but this is not an onerous task.
SCHOOL BAND
If your child is in Year 3, 4, 5 or 6 and is interested in learning a musical instrument, please ask at the office for an information note. A small audition process will take place to assess the suitability of various instruments for each child. Please note that band is a very worthwhile extra-curricular activity which will attract additional financial responsibilities of families. Learning music through band is a great way to develop as part of a team as well as developing greater self-confidence. It is also a cost effective way compared to individual lessons outside of school. (Individual music lessons outside of school are also very effective in developing lifelong skills and a love of music)

KINDER COLOUR DAYS
This term the Kindergarten children will be involved in a number of colour days each Friday. We would like to invite parents and grandparents to come up to support this program each week as we would love to share all the cool, colourful, creative, crafty and crazy activities with the children.
The children will thoroughly enjoy each and every activity from Art and Craft through to Science and Sport.
A gold coin donation each week, will be used to purchase needed equipment. A detailed note will come home with the Kindy children soon.
We hope that the parents and grandparents embrace this fun series of Colour Days and we look forward to working with you throughout the year.

AUSSIE FIVE FAIR RULES
Lake Cathie Public School use a positive behaviour system called the Aussie Five Fair Rules. It is a system based on the premise of explicitly teaching positive and acceptable behaviour through visual and orally reinforced strategies.
All of the five positive rules are supported by posters and songs, allowing teachers a simple and clear message to teach the children about positive and acceptable behaviour. Teachers use these fair rules as a language that children understand and develop over time. Right from Kindergarten, our students will learn the messages from the Five Fair Rules program to enable them to stay in control and where appropriate, learn from their mistakes in a positive and comfortable peer situation.
The first of the Five Fair Rules we have chosen to teach is: “I can raise my hand and wait.” You may even hear the children singing the songs they have learnt.
UNIFORM SHOP TIMES
Tuesday 8.30 – 9.15am Thursday 2.30 – 3.00pm
PRE-LOVED UNIFORMS
If your child is moving off to High School or has outgrown their uniform and you don’t have younger children for hand-me-downs, please consider donating to the P&C so that a second hand clothing pool can be established. Uniform pool clothing will be prepared for sale at a nominal price to help families who may benefit from a little community “spirit” assistance with uniforms.

UNIFORMS
Most of our students look great in their full school uniforms. The staff also look great and have embraced our corporate style uniform. Please remember that our policy guidelines, endorsed by our P & C, state that black polishable leather shoes are to be worn. On sports days our students may wear coloured sports shoes appropriate for sports activities.

For every deposit made at school, no matter how big or small, students will receive a cool Dollarmites token. Once students have individually collected 10 tokens they can redeem them for an exclusive School Banking reward item in recognition of their continued savings behaviour.
TEN TIPS FOR PARENTS OF CHILDREN STARTING SCHOOL
1. Provide information about your child’s immunisation status
Your child will be coming into contact with lots of other children and infections can spread very easily.
Immunisation records need to be presented for Kindergarten enrolment.
Under the Public Health (Amendment) Act 1992, children who have not been immunised may be sent home during an outbreak of a vaccine-preventable disease.
2. Learn the names of the important people at the school
Learning the names of staff will help you communicate with your child about their day at school. It is also important that you have a relationship with your child’s teacher and principal to ensure you are up to date with your child’s progress.
3. Give all information about your child to the school especially medical and special needs
You know your child best. Your child’s kindergarten teacher will have many students to get to know. Help the teacher understand your child better and faster by sharing information and insights. This will also ensure that your child gets any essential attention.
4. Provide emergency contact numbers
The school might need to contact you urgently. Provide alternative numbers and contacts in case the school is unable to reach you.
5. Make the school aware of any special family circumstances
Any changes to your child’s family situation can impact on their emotional and academic well-being. Inform your child’s teacher and principal about any changed circumstances so that the child can be supported if necessary. Examples of special circumstances
include the birth of a sibling, divorce or the death of a loved one.
6. Establish routines with your child and stick to them
Prepare your child for a more structured day. Make a daily routine that includes mealtime, talking time, and reading time.
7. Make sure your child is road/travel safe
Children should know to cross the road only at marked crossings. Please set a good example. Take particular care when you drop off and collect your child from school.
8. Become familiar with school activities - develop a relationship with the school
Parents/caregivers set an example. If you are positive and encouraging towards school, your child will be too. Both the students and teachers will appreciate your involvement and assistance in activities ranging from sports and excursions to music and drama presentations.
9. Educate your child about ‘stranger danger’
Teach your child not to talk to strangers. They should not accept gifts or lifts from someone that they do not know.
10. Label equipment and clothing
Replacing lost clothing and equipment is expensive and inconvenient. You should clearly mark every item with your child’s name.
Bus Pass Applications
Applications for 2020 School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS) travel entitlements are now open. If your application is rejected due to living within the walking distance radius, please contact the school office on 6584 8060 for assistance.

ETHICS CLASSES AT
LAKE CATHIE PUBLIC SCHOOL
Ethics classes are available as an option in NSW public primary schools during the Special Religious Education/Special Education in Ethics (SRE/SEE or ‘scripture’) timeslot. Primary Ethics is the charity authorised by the Department of Education to create curriculum and train volunteers to deliver ethics classes.
Ethics classes are discussion based, covering a range of age-appropriate topics. Children learn to express their own views as well as to listen carefully to, and consider, the views of others. Classes are delivered by trained volunteers using approved lesson materials.
Ethics classes at LCPS will ontinue in 2020 if there is sufficient interest and the required number of volunteers to deliver the program. For more information on the curriculum and volunteering, please visit primaryethics.com.au or contact the school office on 6584 8060

Minutes of previous meeting reviewed
Minutes accepted – Kim McNiff Seconded – Roger Bussell
President’s Report
• It has been a busy few weeks sorting the volunteer’s night which was changed due to the fires. Not sure what the turn up will be but hopefully tonight is still a success.
• An email was sent to Camden Haven P&C about providing a BBQ for the Christmas concert as suggested at the last meeting, but unable to make contact. It was a great night and no pressure for families to have to help at a BBQ or arrive earlier than needed. The Christmas concert was a fantastic performance. Thank you to all the teachers and staff for making it happen.
• Bec will give a speech at the end of year final assembly. It will be kept brief and be more of a thank you for all families who have supported and donated gifts for our raffles.
• Looking forward to the build next year and will be putting our thinking caps on for future fundraising ideas to help raise money for the school.

• Thank you to all the executives and the committee for all your support over 2019. Without your support we don’t have a P&C so thank you and hope to see you all in 2020.
Treasurer’s Report
• Roger presented the account balances – Canteen $6344.34 – Main $2242.65 – Savings $19355.18 Total account balances $27942.17
• Payments $347.82 for the Canteen display board and $250 to the Canteen for kindy orientation.
• Jock – clarified the monies from the savings account that are required. Rachel has sent a request for the remainder of the trivia night monies. Ipads have been ordered and will be paid for from trivia night monies.
• $16,000 to transfer out of the savings account and about $5500 for the oven. • Roger has been having troubles with the current Auditor. They have not been
returning calls or answering emails. They are also located in Kempsey which is difficult. It’s not possible to operate with people who don’t get back to you. Roger requested consideration be given to finding an alternative Auditor. Motion: Roger Bussell Seconded: Bec Bouldin
Principal’s Report
• Jock requested canteen support on Presentation day. It was requested Kylie be paid to do preparation on Wednesday. Motion: Katy Haste Seconded: Roger Bussell
• Hand sanitiser dispensers. Should not be using these in schools. There is the possibility of children burning themselves with the product. The school will be providing pump soap dispensers on sinks in classrooms rather than sanitisers.
• $1000 was raised at our Christmas concert last night. These funds will be given to the RFS. A request has been made for a member to attend our Presentation day where a cheque will be presented.
• Swimming caps have been ordered. An executive decision was made and one design was ordered. Both the school and P&C logos are included, one on either side.
• Jock thanked everyone for what has been a really busy year. A very successful year. The Christmas concert last night was a representation of great things happening in our school.
• Love the comradery of this group and the togetherness and spirit of what we are here for.
• Jock will be receiving $2000 from Lions Club tonight which will be used to purchase additional sporting strip. Will look at a different cut for sporting tops as some of the young girls are feeling a little uncomfortable with the cut of the current ones.
• A full set of images should be received by Friday of the new buildings for consideration. 9 months for first phase. 18 months altogether.
Canteen Report • Last day of canteen will be Thursday of next week (12 December). The canteen will be closed Friday for cleaning, as students will be at the reward day activities.
• Monday 16th will be a meal deal only day. Nothing else available to order. Recess will not be available. Free fruit will be held on Monday rather than Wednesday.
• The new oven will arrive during the holidays. The oven trolley will be collected last week of school to be cut down. Installation of the oven and other works will be done on a Monday or Wednesday so Adrian can be available to assist. Kylie to coordinate with Jock as to installation etc.

Fundraising Information
• Kim McNiff reported there have been two major fundraisers for the term. • ‘The Other Chef’ jam and relish packs have been hugely successful. 209
packs ordered with approximately one third of students ordering. $2090 profit for the school. A post will be put on Facebook when the packs arrive. Hopefully the packs will arrive on Friday after Presentation day.
• Christmas Raffle – As at 26 November $917 dollars has been raised. • Thanks to Katy Haste for wrapping all the hampers. 12 have been made up
so far. • Office staff will draw the winners on Presentation day and hampers can then
be collected from the office. • Consideration and discussion will be held on where monies raised will be
spent to benefit school programs.
General Business
• No general business items were raised.
Upcoming Meetings:
Next Meetings: Tuesday 11 Feb Wednesday 11 March followed by the Annual General Meeting
Slow down to 40km/hour when bus lights flashDid you know that by law you must slow down to 40km/h when bus lights are flashing?
As our students start the 2020 school year, the NSW Government and Busways is reminding parents, teachers and other motorists about this law which is designed to keep our kids safe.
Lights begin to flash when the bus stops and the doors open, and they keep flashing for 20 seconds after the doors close. Children are most at risk in the minutes after they get off the bus as the can be unpredictable in their movements.
Drivers should look out for children who are crossing the road or waiting to cross. Lights flash on buses to warn motorists that buses are picking up and dropping off children. By law, a driver must not overtake or pass a bus with flashing lights at more than 40km/h.
Drivers caught driving over the 40km/hr requirement face speeding fines and a loss of demerit points, depending on the speed they’re travelling. If they remain at 60km/h in a 60km zone, they could face fines of up to $275 and a loss of three demerit points.
As young children are still developing skills around road safety, drivers should take care around bus stops where children might want to walk across the road.Motorists can help reduce the risk of a crash and keep children safe by:
Slowing down to 40km/h when bus lights are flashing,Looking out for children crossing the road near bus stops, in school zones or along bus routes, andGiving way to buses when they merge back into traffic. Visit the Centre for Road Safety website to learn more about the Bus Flashing Lights Campaign.
