UNDERSTANDING THE CLASSROOM MANAGEMENTVIA ICT EXPERTISE REQUISITES FOR TEACHERS

Session II: Trust on their learning attributes.

Learning to Learn:

"A generation ago, teachers could expect that what they taught would last their students a lifetime. Today, because of rapid economic and social change, schools have to prepare students for jobs that have not yet been created, technologies that have not yet been invented and problems that we don't yet know all arise."

Teachers’ don’t ONLY be KNOWLEDGE SMART

Be Street Smart too !

A Learning Atmosphere

Take advantage of the first days of class Establish an environment in which

achieving specified learning goals takes priority over other concerns

It is much easier to establish this environment from the beginning rather than later

A Case Study:

For example, if two students are talking in the back of the room and your first step in the plan is to give your students a verbal warning, don't stop your instruction to begin yelling at the students. Instead, have a set policy that simply saying a student's name is enough of a clue for them to get back on task. Another technique is to ask one of them a question.

Solution/ Strategy:

Meet disruptions that arise in your class with in kind measures. In other words, don't elevate disruptions above their current level. Your discipline plan should provide for this, however, sometimes your own personal issues can get in the way.

5 steps

1. Take advantage of the new school year or term to set the stage for cooperation

2. Be particularly prepared and organized3. Minimize transition time4. Utilize a communication style that

establishing non-threatening, comfortable environment

5. Clearly establish expectations for conduct

Beginning a new year

Take advantage of initial uncertainty Ride your “fences” PLAN for a favorable beginning

Classroom/lab organization Ongoing routines

Use learning activities with easy-to-follow, uncomplicated directions

Use a disclosure statement

Teachers to manage a class need to be:

Used to clearly communicate expectations to students and parents

Refer back to the guidelines throughout the term

Essential Elements of Digital Literacy

Cultural – Look at the context in which the literacy is situated

Cognitive – How do we think when we are using a device (vs when we are not)?

Constructive – We should aim to use technology in a constructive (vs a passive) way

Communicative – We should be using technology to enhance our communications

Essential Elements of Digital Literacy

Confident – You need to be confident to jump in feet first and explore/use/master/learn technology

Creative – Using technology in the classroom requires some creativity and risk taking – don’t stick to the basics when you can test out a new idea or use for technology

Critical – You need the ability to look at the technologies you’re using (and what you’re using them for) with a critical eye

Civic- We should be using the technologies available to us for greater good (which can be widely defined)
