The Hudson River School is an integral part of the cultural history of Springfield. Artists draw inspiration from the beautiful Pioneer Valley landscape. Today, projects like Art & Sole have helped to energize the down-town area. Artist live/work spaces respond to the growing need of exposure to art.

Art AgricultureThis project draws upon the rich agricultural heritage of the valley in addition to explor-ing its conjunction with stimulating local business. Developed out of a response to the need for sustainable urban habits, this program will serve to strengthen and edu-cate the community.

IndustryThis approach grows from Springfield long assiciation with production. The pace of advancements in modern technology calls for a place an educational facility for ma-chinists, which would also fuction as a small business resource, seeking to engage the creative citizenry through FabLab.

David Hockney Meredith MonkBorn in Bradford, England. 1937.Hockney, a renowned painter, printmaker, and photographer among other trades, greatly influenced the pop art movement in the 1960’s. Some of his best known works are done by a method of collaging photographs of a subject or landscape from different perspectives, creating an effect comparable to cubism.

An American singer, composer, director/choreographer, Monk is a pioneer in progressive vocal techniques has pushed the bounds of performing arts throughout her career. Over the course of her 45 year career, she is acclaimed by audiences and critics alike and has been described as a “Magician of the voice,”

A folding concrete slab runs throughout the structure and is present in each space as a wall, floor, or ceiling, separating the spaces; public from private, loud from quiet, and living from work.

Amherst, MA

The program for this center includes a large display space for art, administrative and conference rooms, and a library which includes a study for visiting artists. The building is organized on two axes based on privacy and noise (see opposite). The V-shaped plan opens toward the green space on the Northwest corner of the site. At the center is a courtyard for gatherings and outdoor exhibits.Large sliding partition walls in the display space can be moved to section off an area for smaller exhibits or film screenings.

A place to think, question, and repose. This public space for reflection is a loop that can be entered at any of the 3 spaces, providing flexibility to suit each individual. Light and geometry guide the inhabitant through the site while allowing each person to advance at their own pace. Inspiration was drawn from the Salt Flats while crossing Utah. The vastness of the space sets the viewer away from any distractions causing them to first look outward at the landscape, and then inward towards the self. This vista creates sense of scale, as well as a feeling

of solitude.

Daydream Space

Box ProjectFirst, a series of elongated rectangular forms were arranged within the bounds of a 1 foot cube. I then materielized the space around these forms, creating a mass which could then be added to or subracted from. In this project, light and contrast lead the way to a final viewing platform. Views between spaces give the inhabitant incentive to move forward while encouraging

social interaction.

Body Study

The transition from lying to standing is one of the most recurrent movements to human beings. Every night we rest and every morning we rise. An exercise in diagramming, this project required the analysis of a movement of the human body, and to then take our

findings and translate them into form.

MasonryThe following stone projects were built by myself and 2 other masons during the summer of 2011 while working for Treefrog Landscapes. Under their guidance I learned how to complete stonework from preliminary sitework to coursing and capping. All work is dry which means that the structural integrity of the projects relies on drainage and meticulous placement of each locally quarried Goshen stone.
