PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

French history has been defined by conflict. France has left its mark, and has been indelibly marked, by the conflicts and struggles that have defined our times. From the Revolution and Napoleonic Wars, which unleashed new conceptions of nationalism and war, to the catastrophe of the World Wars where these ideas were put into devastating effect, French thinkers, leaders, and soldiers have been instrumental to the creation of the modern world.

This course will examine the legacy of conflict in French history and society. In addition to readings, it will feature a tour of Revolutionary and Napoleonic sites, a visit to Verdun, the D-Day landing beaches, and major cultural sites.

Highlights include: Notre Dame de Paris, Eiffel Tower, Père Lachaise Cemetery, Champs-Élysées, Montmartre and Sacre Coeur, Louvre, Versailles, American Cemetery in Normandy, and Mont St.-Michel.

The history of France is, by large measure, our history. Our language, our conflicts, and the ideas at the heart of our own Revolution are largely of l’origin français. Join us in the summer of 2016 as we explore this fascinating history in what promises to be the trip of a lifetime.

This course will also be cross-listed with the foreign languages department and will also feature an optional French language component.
