FACULTY OF ENGINEERING

The birth of the Civil Engineering

Department in 1956 at the University of

Malaya campus in Kuala Lumpur marks

the beginning of tertiary engineering education in

Malaysia. Expansion of the Faculty quickly ensued

with the establishment of the Mechanical Engineering

Department soon after (1956) and followed by

Electrical Engineering Department in 1959. TheChemical Engineering Department established in

1975 completes the traditional Departments within

the Faculty.

New frontiers into engineering education emerged

with the setting up of the Department of Design and

Manufacture in 1996 to be followed by the creation of

Biomedical Engineering Department in 1997.

Currently there are 6 departments offering an array of10 engineering undergraduate programmes.

From the early days, postgraduate engineering

education has been embedded in the degree of

Master of Engineering Science and PhD, which are

totally based on research. However, to cater for

demands for alternative forms of postgraduate

programme, the Faculty has totally revamped its

Master of Engineering by coursework and

dissertation beginning 2002 and latest by 2010. With

the rapid advance in knowledge and technology in

the engineering field, it is envisaged that the Master

of Engineering programmes will continue to offer new

and exciting courses in the future.
