Introduction

This is a project in homage to a book titled Twentysix Gasoline

Stations by Edward Ruscha.

Instead of gasoline stations I have chosen to photograph train

stations in London because of family ties – my grandfather

was fascinated by trains and my uncle worked for London

Underground – and my own personal interest in architecture.

A pinhole camera was used so I could capture long exposures.

The camera was an 8 inch wooden cube. I chose to use a pinhole

of this size so I could expose the images for long enough to

eliminate any people. The idea was to draw attention to the

architecture involved as it is often overlooked in daily life. I also

enjoy the manual process more than digital photography, which I

feel is extremely detached from the origins of photography.

The project reflects my stubborn nature, albeit not a particularly

admirable trait in its own right. It also shows an unhealthy

persistence and determination to follow a project through to

the end, regardless of numerous setbacks and failures. These

hindrances are visibly represented throughout the book as

incorrectly exposed photographs.

Persistence and determination are represented by the few

beautiful exposures such as Whitechapel Station, Kings Cross and

Liverpool Street. Although London Bridge is underexposed, it

has a rather interesting and haunting quality about it which shows

those happy accidents that persistent experimentation yields.
