Tsunamis

• Watch Tsunamis 101: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_oPb_9gOdn4

What are they?

• A tsunami is a big, powerful wave created when a large amount of water is displaced (moved) suddenly by some event.

• They can be caused by undersea earthquakes, volcanoes, explosions, landslides, or anything that moves a lot of water.

Where do they form?

Tsunamis form in large bodies of water, though usually where “seaquakes” occur. They can threaten coastal areas all over the world, though the western Americas and Southeast Asia have the highest risk.

Tsunamis: Shapes and Sizes

• Tsunamis are usually rated by height or how far inland they go.

• In deep water, the waves are short but move very fast.

• In shallow water, the waves slow down, but that makes them taller.
