TROWBRIDGE Fine Art
The Beauty of an Aquatintexploration, a different and subtle means of expression, writes Kelly Wenham.
The aquatint came to life at the hands of painter and printmaker Jan van de Veld in 1650 while looking for a print
prints.
The aquatint was named for the effects it creates, which look like ink or watercolour washes. The technique can be used to produce shaded areas in a printed etching that range from
-scapes where atmospheric tones create realism and drama.
It became the medium of masterpieces in the hands of the great Spanish painter Francisco Goya. After starting his etchings with brittle but assertive lines, Goya proceeded to cloak them in haunting aquatint shadows. A graphic artist of astounding ingenuity and sensitivity, Goya created four great cycles of etchings to which aquatint contributed emotional depth. In more recent years, it has been used by artists such as David Hockney.
The process begins with a copper or zinc plate being covered with rosin which resists acid. The plate must be heated to adhere the rosin particles. The artist then paints varnish or asphalt (tar) on the parts of the plate where an image is not wanted, and the plate is submerged in acid. The acid bites around each tiny grain of rosin. The deeper the bite, the more ink is held in the plate and the darker the tones will be in the print.
artist paints the acid on to the plate rather than submerging .
If the artist paints a liquid soap mixture on the plate instead of varnish to protect parts of the plate from the acid, the soap breaks down in the acid, creating irregular tones.
numbers of times so the aesthetically superior quality of an aquatint is not compromised. The plate is destroyed ensuring the edition is guaranteed.
Martin Trowbridge presents an exciting and vibrant
renowned modern artists.
Made up of fantastic limited edition abstract aquatints, each piece has earned its place in this distinctive TROWBRIDGE collection for its beautiful abstract simplicity.
This beauty is enhanced by the sympathetic use of aquatinting as the chosen medium, which is able to produce
the delicacy and detail the artist would normally have created using watercolours, oils, charcoal or pencil.
To add to the uniqueness of this archive, all the aquatints are limited edition pieces, some from editions as small as nine.
As you would expect, we have chosen to be sympathetic with our framing to keep the focus squarely on the artwork.

Godwin Hoffmann was born in Büchenbeuren, Germany, in 1945. From
1973 until his death in July 2013, he lived and worked in the Alsace region of France.
From an early age, Hoffman admired the Dutch Masters of the 19th century, van Gogh, Kandinsky, Picasso, Braque and many more who inspired his consequent disciplined and rigorous approach to form.
Hoffman began his painting career

Hoffmann’s painted work contains large chromatic stripes, often coloured and often vertical, all relying on the impact of colour to help translate their volume within an open environment. His conceptual design and minimalist attitude offer a modern take on well-composed abstract art.

Matthew TysonTyson is known for his bold use of colour
not dissimilar to the minimalist technique
in the 1950’s, accentuating the power of simplistic design in an instantly commanding way.
Using Japanese philosophies such as ‘wabi’ (simplicity and transience) and the notion of balance and counterbalance to engage the viewer, Tyson allows for personal
interpretation of any underlying message. With striking vibrancy, like that of an ocean or open space of land, the visual symmetry offers a highly pleasing contemporary composition. Tyson’s intelligent use of complimentary colours is an effective visual of positive and negative space encompassing the entirety of the print.
Tyson’s work is currently hanging in the Tate Britain in London.

Alain ClémentAlain Clément, who was born in 1941, is a
self-taught artist who began painting at 20 years old.
During his time teaching at the Fine Art Schools in Montpelier and Nîmes he established himself as an abstract painter.
Clément’s expressive abstract strokes
and energy. The simplicity allows us, as the viewer, to enjoy the full vibrancy of
his choice of colour, boldly creating that emotive energy.
His artistic style has developed over nearly 40 years and his abstract paintings sit comfortably between expression and a search for composition.
His paintings and sculptures are represented in many great public collections across the world including the Museum of Modern Art in Paris.

Jacques ClauzelFrench painter, Jacques Clauzel, spent
some years travelling through Africa using photographs as his medium to capture his new found love of African art.
He came back to France in 1976 and once again picked up a paintbrush exploring etching, lithography, screen-printing and aquatinting.
Clauzel uses clean ruled lines to construct simple forms without the constraint of being visually recognisable or overly personal. It is this neutral expression that assists the viewer experience, with Clauzel’s desired experience being ‘silence’. The format of his work is clean and simple, always linear with large monochrome surfaces in shades of black, white or brown.

His pieces create a sense of realism and
boost of energy. “What I hope … is that
impressions they had. Here I bring proposals to the imagination.”
The imagined, dark, silhouetted shapes of

Pierre Muckensturm
Pierre Muckensturm is a modern French artist who lives and works in Alsace
region of France.
His gestural shapes create directional movement that carries the viewer’s eye around the work in a seemingly pre-determined fashion.
The monochrome palette of the artwork
is down to Muckensturm’s fondness for the colour black and its clear translation
positive and negative spaces created within the artwork.
After working extensively with curves for many years, he has recently turned his interest to another geometric form: the black cross.

freedom of the uncomplicated lifestyle he leads.
Loste’s mountain workshop is a vast open space, the walls witness to his preferred colours of black and green with touches of deep blue. Horses and riders painted on
well as the walls. While the composition is highly disciplined and symmetric, the paint seems to be applied freely, creating an aura of energy and spontaneity.

Albert MerzAlbert Merz came to art quite late in life;
at the age of 38 he joined an art school
production.
made famous by the modern artists of the 1950’s, such as Matisse, Merz uses the juxtaposition of recognisable objects and shapes to create abstract parallels within his pieces.
The contrast of light and dark colour overlaid on one another give the illusion of depth, much like a still life painting of a classical era. Merz commonly has his shapes duelling, as if both attempting to embody the artwork as much as the other, building the objects character and the works narrative. His intention is to give balance between the two, using the aquatint process to create light, dark and a contrast

Pierre-Marie BrissonBorn in 1955, Pierre-Marie Brisson, is one of
Europe’s most talented contemporary artists.
Brisson’s artworks have often been compared to cave drawings. Their timeless appearance represents a kind of archeological dig for the artist: he cuts, scratches and pierces the multi-layered surfaces of his canvasses to reveal the images from within the strata of the materials.
The simplistic forms within the images intelligently contrast with the heavy texturing to give the impression of being equally timeless and contemporary.

Today, Brisson’s original artwork can be seen to fetch upwards of $37,000.

Martin NoëlMartin Noël was born in Berlin in 1956

Noël uses his passion for woodcuts and linocuts in his work, creating his own world by developing a variety of letters and shapes carved from the material’s surface.
Typically, his pieces focus on linear patterns and thin structures that draw the eye in to the image.
The simple modern shapes, not unlike those of Mondrian or Van Doesburg, combine complimentary and contrasting colours,
favoured by many of the last century’s painters.

Cornu’s pieces have a calligraphic, and

His extensive education means Hao possesses a creative approach not often seen in other Chinese artists. Simple and elegant, Hao’s pieces convey a graceful and tranquil mood.

Olivier Moriette
Whilst training in some of the best Paris workshops, including the Old Gallery
of the Temple and the Salon de Montrouge, Moriette perfected his printmaking techniques, while also being able to indulge his love for painting and engraving.
Moriette’s work is playful in its use of lines, colours and scale, creating landscapes that the viewer is free to interpret. Moriette describes the nature of engraving
as very specific, a process that cannot be rushed with an essential and true development.
“Even if I tried to work fast, I would not be able to skip necessary phases of reflection. When I paint, and progressively add layers, the process is similarly slow. My aim is not to work more thoroughly, but to give me time to strengthen my belief. I must let my eye work.”

Ken DenningKen Denning was born in 1957 in the town
of Sønderborg, Southern Denmark.
Dramatic landscapes, both of places visited including the Faroe Islands renowned for their awe-inspiring and rugged cliffs, and of his surrounding homeland in Denmark, preoccupy Dennings’ work.
In the nineties, Denning was experimental with his mediums, including lithography,
serigraphy, photogravure, drypoint, woodcut, and incorporating oils, acrylics and plaster to create depth in his pieces.
Acting as a window, peering through the horizontal lines and vegetation, the developed conceptual perspective offers
and lines act not as a distraction but a sophisticated compliment to the overall depth of his landscapes.

Andrea MalärMalär sites his passion for expressive
polarities as the constant in his work; the light and shadow, the interior and exterior, the material and the spiritual, the concrete and the symbolic, all balanced and contained within a geometric shape.
This series of aquatints is an instant modern statement, with abstract, puzzle-like design. Showcasing the graphic simplicity of printmaking with the sharp angular shapes
and two-tone hues casting a depth of form; it’s as if it were an imprint of a three-dimensional sculpture.
Malär works in many different mediums
between sculpture and graphical signs. He is fascinated by the purity of the elements of his rusty metal sculptures and by the absolute simplicity of the graphic compositions of his etchings.

Her pieces are most often box or totem structure, often rippling and natural-looking contours are contained within, emerge from, and merge with the architectural center of the piece.
Her thoughtfully executed cubist forms carry through to her drawings and prints, with the character of an ancient artefact or relic and with a unique style that sees them appear almost gilded.

Jacques Bosser has said of his art; “I try to get rid of all references to obtain the prime elements and forms we have in ourselves; these are very simple: circles, spirals...they are part of the collective unconsciousness and remind us of a kind of primitive innocence.”

Henri Matisse 1954 Vintage Prints CollectionThese prints are from the 1954 edition. They are not later reproductions and should not be confused with modern posters.
Henri Matisse became one of the world's most famous painters of the 20th century completely by accident. Whilstconvalescing from appendicitis his mother gave him his first set of paints to while away his time.
'From the moment I held the box of colours in my hands, I knew this was my life. I threw myself into it like a beast that plunges towards the thing it loves,' he said.
In his final years Matisse became wheelchair bound and in 1941, with the aid of assistants, he set about creating highly original work using brightly coloured cut-out paper shapes arranged in abstract patterns. These cut paper collages, often on a large scale, were called gouaches découpés.
His Blue Nudes series features prime examples of this technique he called 'painting with scissors'; they demonstrate the ability to bring his eye for colour and geometry to a new medium of utter simplicity, but with playful and delightful power.
'Instead of drawing an outline and filling in the colour I am drawing directly in colour,' he said.
The first lithographic plates of this work were executed under Matisse's own direction in 1954.The succeeding work was completed under the meticulous supervision of his friend and publisher, Teriade.
The lithographic plates, in fifteen to twenty impressions of colour, were printed by Mourlot Frères, of Paris, and the monochrome heliogravure plates were printed by the master printer Draeger Freres.
Our 1954 Vintage Prints are Signed in Plate and a Certificate of Authenticity accompanies each one.
These images are prints published in 1954. They should be not confused with modern posters.
'Drawing is like making an expressive gesture with the advantage of permanence'.

Gaining an MA in Printmaking from the Royal College of Art in 1998 and winning several awards for her work, she has now been a printmaker for over ten years.
Using the screen printing process, the artist achieves smooth, flat and crisp images, exploring shape and form through the layering of colours, textures and painterly marks.
Her works is based around repetition, forming patterns, and using lines, stripes and hand drawn textures to add interest. Below is anextract from an Interview with E. Lawrenson from last year which illustrates beautifully the importance of observation in her life for the pieces she creates.
“I am a printmaker, using only the screen printing process at the moment. I make abstract printsinspired by anything and everything around me. I notice unusual shapes, patterns and colours then try to make some sort of order out of them back in my studio. I can take shapes and images from almost anywhere and am constantly scanning as I go about my day. Deciding what is worthy of noting, or drawing is sometimes a struggle. If I’m lacking stimulus or feel overwhelmed by all the stuff in my sketchbooks I’ll go out for a walk with my dog in the hills or by the river and absorb colours, textures and clear my head.
I have two main styles of working; one is the more hard edged geometric or linear style and the other, the more fluid abstract shapes and organic work.
I tend to focus back to nature and the rural landscape when I find myself going off on tangents. It makes me channel into an area I find calming and makes me work at a slower pace. I find the organic prints are the most beautiful. They have softer lines and curves. These also tend to be the prints with the least colours, so never seem to go wrong.”
