1 GMDSS REQUIREMENTS
JotronGMDSSproductsaremanufacturedandapprovedtobecompliantwithrelevantIMO/SOLAS(SafetyofLifeatSea)Regulationsandrequirements.TheSOLASGMDSSregulationsarestructuredsuchthatallGMDSSships are required to carry a minimum set of equipment, with (basically) more equipment being required thefurthertheshiptravelsfromland.GMDSSrequirementforSART(SearchandRescueLocatingDevice)accordingtoSOLAS:

1.1 GENERAL DESCRIPTION
TronSART20isemergencyequipmentconsistingof:1.TronSART20radartransponder.2.Mountingropeforliferafts/lifeboats.
The9GHzradartranspondertypeTronSART20isdevelopedbyJotronAStomeettherulesandregulationsforuseonvesselsandliferaftsinthemaritimeservice.TronSART20meetsthespecificationsfor9GHzradartranspondersforuseinsearchandrescueoperationsatsea.
TheoperatingrangeoftheTronSART20isupto30nauticalmiles,dependingontheheightoftheelectronicunitandtheradarheightofthesearchandres-cueunit(seaorairborne).Witharadarheightof20mandtheTronSART20placed at 1m above sea level, the range will be up to 10 nautical miles. TronSART20isbuoyant,howevertoobtainmaximumperformancethetranspondershouldbeplaced inaverticalpositionandashighupaspossible inordertoachievemaximumcoverage.Severalmountingbracketsandmountingaidsareavailabletoensurecorrectmountinganduseoftheradartransponder.
The purpose of the Tron SART20 is to perform a secondary alarm when se-archandrescueunitsaresearchingforaliferaft/lifeboatindistress.TheTronSART20willhelptheunitstopinpointexactlywherethedistressedboatislo-catedinalargerarea.Thisisdonewiththehelpoftheradaronthesearchingshiporhelicopter.
WhentheTronSART20isinterrogated(hit)byaradarsignal,itwillimmediatelystart to transmit a number of sweeps covering the complete maritime 3 cmradarband.Thesesweepsaredetectedontheradarscreenandareusedtonavigatedirectlytowardsthedistressedliferaft,fordetailsonradardisplayseechapter5.3.Maximumdistancetoashipwillnormallybeabout10nmandap-proximately30nmtoahelicopter,dependentonthehelicoptersaltitude.Thetransponderwillnotgiveanyalarmsfurtherawaythanthis.
The primary alarm will usually be an Emergency Position Indicating RadioBeacon(EPIRB)ordistresscallonVHF/HF-manualorviadigitalselcall.
TheTronSART20shouldbeactivatedimmediatelyafteractivationoftheEPIRBorbyinstructionfromtherescuecontrolcentre.

Thebatteriesof theTronSART20will lastat least96hours instandbyafteractivationandthenminimum8hoursofcontinuousoperation.
Althoughthetransponderdoesnotsendanyalarmviasatellite,VHForotherradiocommunication,theuseshouldbelimitedtoshorttestsandemergencysituations.Thisistosavebatterycapacityincaseofasituationwherethetran-sponderisneeded.
1.2 Tron SART20 featuresWatertight:TronSART20iswatertighttoadepthofminimum1meter.Buoyant:TronSART20isbuoyantincasethetransponderisaccidentallydroppedintothewater.ToincreasecoveragetheSART20shouldalwaysbeheldormountedashighaspossible.Rugged design:TheTronSART20willwithstandadropfrom20metersintothewater.Itisre-sistanttoseawater,oilandsunlight.Handling:TronSART20isdesignedforeasyoperation,withabriefoperatinginstructionprintedontheunit.Itcomesstandardwitha10meterropeandashacklehooktobeusedforhangingtheSART20ontheinsideofaliferaft.Indicators:TronSART20isequippedwithanLEDandabuiltinbuzzertoindicateoperation.TheLEDwillnormallygiveaflasheach4secondstoshowthattheTronSART20isactivated.
WhenasearchandrescueunitisapproachingthebuzzerwillsoundeachtimetheSART20ishitbytheradar.AcontinuoussoundfromthebuzzermeansthattheshiporhelicopterisclosetotheTronSART20andtheradarishittingtheTronSART20continuously.
Battery unit.The battery module is to be replaced every5.year. A battery expiry label on the TronSART20 housing displays the expiry date. Anewbatterycomescompletewithcableandconnector.

5 OPERATION
TronSART20shouldbeinstalledaccordingtochapter1and4,andinadistresssituation,theTronSART20shouldbecarriedfromit´sstoragepositiontotheliferaft/lifeboat
5.1 ACTIVATING TRON SART201.Breaksealatswitch.2.Pulllockingpinandmakesurethattheswitchentersthe“ON”position.An audible“BEEP”willbeheardandtheindicatorledwillstarttoflashevery4sec3.Place(orhold)thetransponderinaverticalpositionashighaspossible. 5.3 TEST OF TRON SART20
TestoftheTronSART20isdoneusingtheshipsown3cmX-bandradar.Theradardisplaywillshowdifferentpatternsdependingontherangetothetrans-ponder.SeeFigure5.3a,bandcfordetailsoftheradardisplay.Notethattheexamplesshownaretypicalandwillvarywiththeradarperformance(height,poweroutputandsensitivity).
Withthetransponderlocatedclosetotheradarthesignalswillappearasringsontheradardisplay.Theringsmaybebrokeninsomesectors,dependingonshipconstructionandotherobstacles,anddoesnot indicateanerror in thetransponder.Placing it furtherawaywill reducethesignals to 12dotson theradardisplay,showingthedirectiontothetransponder.
ModernradarsoftenhavespecialfunctionthatwilloptimizereceptionofradarSART,eitherinTESTorON.IftheRadarhassuchfunction,theRadarisdetunedoutofbesttuningcondition,anderasesorweakensallnormalradarechoes,butSARTechoesarenoterasedbecauseSARTfrequenciesscansoveralltheX-bandfrom9.2to9.5GHz.Whenthisfunctionisselectedontheradar,atext”SART”isshownatthebottomofthedisplay.Note!MakesurethattheSARTfeatureisturnedoffwhenSARTdetectionisnolongernecessary

Providedthattheunit(s)returnedforrepairisunderwarranty,man-hourcostand material cost will be covered by Jotron. This is not valid if the customerhastriedtorepair,modifyorrebuildtheunit,oriftheunithasbeenexposedtoenvironmentalconditionsoutsidethespecificationsfortheunit.Iftheunitisinneedofrepair,pleasereturnitcarriagepaidtotheagentthatyoupurchaseditfrom.Additionalcostsnotrelatedtorepair/replacementoftheunitwillnotbecovered.
