Suicide Prevention
By: Barbie Cowles
Why would people
think of suicide as an
option to solve a prob-
lem? Sometimes peo-
ple think of this as an
option because they
are suffering from de-
pression or other rea-
sons that cause them a
great deal of pain.
Some young people
may be overwhelmed
by problems, such as
drug or alcohol abuse
or possibly family vio-
lence. Whatever the
cause may be, there
are people who can
help you find a solu-
tion. While you may
not be able to find that
solution, you can help
the person find some-
one who can!
Recognizing the
warning signs:
*A sudden worsening
in school performance
*An obsession with
death or violence that
was never there
*Depression
You need to under-
stand that suicide is a
very serious matter
and after it happens
and someone is gone
you can’t bring them
back. They will not be
in your lives any more.
If you think or possibly
know that someone is
even considering this
action, talk to them or
get them to talk to
someone who can help.
Let’s Put a Stop to Bullying
By: Tiffany Ballard
Did you know that thousands of kids a year wake up scared to go to school? That’s because people have been picked on or have been through name calling and they don’t know how to stand up for themselves. Some people think that fighting is a way to solve a bully problem. I have news for you - it is not. All it does is cause stress problems for you that can cause health issues later on in life. Here are some tips to putting a stop to bullying.
The middle school level is where you are going to see a lot of bully-ing. The main issue here at the middle school is name calling. Name calling can really led to things like the pressure to cause a fight or students get so mad that they are not paying attention in class and failing their class. If name calling does start, stay away from those students or if you hear somebody calling someone else a name, then tell them not to do it.
Here are some ways to stop bully-
ing. Use the “Ha-Ha-So Strategy.”
H-help
A-assert yourself
H-humor
A-avoid
S-self talk
O-own it
So don’t be afraid to go and talk to someone, but make sure you are not putting you self in danger or any body else.

In years past, Mrs. Marion has always taught Reading and Drama. But, this year she is teach-ing all new class, Drama.
You are probably thinking, How is Drama different from Reading and Drama? Mrs. Marion answers this question for us,
“Drama is different from Reading and Drama because in Drama we move around a lot and we use in-terpersonal skills. Also, in Reading and Drama we use a book’s crite-ria, in Drama, we don’t use a
case in mid- December, and we will be doing a major production in April of 2011.”
When I asked her what kind of criteria they were working on, she said, “Right now we are going over the technical elements of Drama. “As in, the different types of jobs in Drama other than being on stage as an actor.”
The Drama students will con-tinue learning about Drama, so if you’re interested……….. JOIN!

Chorus is one of those classes that if
you don’t know what to do in your
afternoons, and you can sing, you
should come and join the fun. During
6th period, Ms. Kelli Wilson teaches
this marvelous class.
Ms. Wilson has informed me that
this class is not just another music
class. It is a performance based
class that builds on musical abilities
and talents, rather than just con-
tent. Also, she has informed me that
they’re working on the following
songs: “We Are the World,” Christ-
mas selections, and “Jackson Five”
songs.
They will be performing songs on
December 6th, which
will be open to the
public and to students
at Barren County Mid-
dle School. They hope
to have a concert in
the spring that will be
open to the public as
well. They will be per-
forming traditional Christmas songs
to Barren County Middle School.
Chorus will not be competing this
year because it is the first year that
we have offered this
class. Chorus will com-
pete in a few years. So
if you know elementary
students who can sing,
tell them to keep prac-
ticing so they can be in
the BCMS chorus.

Grandparents Day by Taylor Littrell On September 10, 2010, Barren

annual grandparent’s day. There
was a huge turn out. 148 grand-
parents came to celebrate. The
school provided punch, cookies,
nuts, M & M’s, and water for the
grandparents and their grand-
children to enjoy. The students
took free pictures with their

quoted, "When you first step on the mat at a competition, all you practice has paid off. The butterfly feeling is in your stomach and you give everything you’ve got in those 2 minutes. It is wonderful!" Shelby England quoted, “The most wonderful thing is doing stunts!”
Cheering also has regulations. You have to have at least a C average on your report card or above. The cheer-leaders also have demerits. If you get an office referral, you are kicked off.
We wish the cheerleaders the best of luck at their competitions.
Our Barren County Cheerleaders are doing a marvelous job at keeping our school in peppy spirits. We asked Ms. Wren, one of the coaches, what is in a normal everyday practice? She com-mented, “In a normal practice we stretch, practice new routines, practice competition routines, stunts, game related things, tumbling, and more.” The cheerleaders will have at least one competition a month starting in Octo-ber. Some new things they are doing are competition routines, full downs, liberties and improving school spirit.
We asked some cheerleaders what the most exciting part of cheer is. Casey Talley, an Eighth grader at BCMS

The softball team had a great season this year. They ended with a record of 13-10-1. Great job ladies! The team grew a lot mentally and physically through out the season. They focused a lot on things that will make them better players in the future. Some of these in-clude fundamentals of hit-ting, throwing, catching, bunting, and all of the fine
details of softball.
Each and every one of the girls worked hard on those aspects and improved every game. Coach Gillon says, “We had a fine group of players, but more impor-tantly a fine group of young ladies who will be success-ful in all their future en-deavors.”
“The Barren County Middle School dance team is Drama free, if there is any drama, we can solve it!” The first BCMS dance team competi-tion is October 17, 2010, in Lexington KY. Good luck all BCMS Dancers!!!
Each month we will have two Dancers of the months, one 7th grade the other 8th grade. This months Dancers are: 7th grade-Hannah Morgan and 8th grade-Shelby Lowe
Another Dance Team member I interviewed was Mariah Hughes, a 7th grader here at Barren County Middle School. I asked Mariah what she thought about the Dance Team. She said “I think the Dance Team is awesome! And all the girls are super nice!”
I think we’ll do great this year at competitions and our captains are great! They really make you work. A big thanks to our Coach Tiffany Heers!
