General Definition

Transportation Technology is defined as any technology that is used to transport people and/or products within a society.

All transportation can be divided into divisions or categories.

Categories of Transportation

Atmospheric (air)

Marine (sea)

Space

Terrestrial (land)

Air Transportation

Atmospheric or air transportation is concerned with vehicles that operate primarily in the earth’s atmosphere.

Lighter-than-air: Good-Year Blimp, hot-air balloons

Heavier-than-air: Passenger planes, military aircraft.

Classified as:

Marine Transportation

Marine transportation is transportation by water.

Inland waterways: Canals, rivers, lakes, coastal water; ferries, canoes, sailboards, motor boats, personal watercraft.

Transoceanic maritime travel : barges, freighters, cruise ships, aircraft carriers, submersibles.

Sub-divided into different modes:

Space Transportation

Space transportation is defined as any form of transportation that reaches beyond the atmosphere surrounding the earth.

Unmanned: Satellites (communication), space probe (Mars mission), missiles (ballistic).

Manned: Vehicular units (Apollo 13), Shuttle units (Endeavour orbiter), space station

Sub-divided into different modes:

Land Transportation

Land (or Terrestrial) transportation is defined as any transportation that is used on or under land to transport people and products/goods.

People (see next slide).

Goods: (see following slide).

Land Transportation continued

People modes - are divided into random and fixed routes.

Random Route: Car & small truck, Bus, Four-Wheeler, Snowmobile, Bicycle, etc.

Fixed Route: Railway, Subway, Elevator, moving sidewalk, etc.

Goods mode - are divided into vehicular systems and stationary systems.

Vehicular system: Railways, Truck/Tractor, cranes, etc.

Stationary systems: Pipelines, conveyors, etc.
