Long Term and Short Term ObjectivesOf Hide-Working Experiments

Primary Objective: To produce a methodology for identifying archaeological tanning processes based on changes in the skin’s dermal structure. Short Term Goal:

Produce a sample collection

Mid Range Goal:

Microscopically analyse , photograph and record/describe the sample collection.

Use methodology produced to analyse archaeological samples of preserved hide items.

Long Term Goals:

To excavate and analyse a small number of samples buried at the start of the project.

To bury more samples in a greater range of environments in the UK, Europe and the US to be excavated at a later date as possible post-doc. work.
