Topiary ‘living sculptures’

TC161012DT01

Rukuhia Homestead Landscaping owners Graeme and ValBurton with some of their Topiary Different offerings, shownfor the first time at the 2012 Waikato Home and Garden Show.

Te Awamutu Courier gar-den expert Graeme Burtonplayed a major part in thesuccess of the 2012 WaikatoHome and Garden Show.

Mr Burton and his wifeVal were exhibitors and healso presented a dailyseminar over a busy fourdays.

The couple were highlycommended for Best Site.

The Burtons were excitedto have the first showing ofRukuhia HomesteadLandscaping’s new range oflarge topiary plants.

All of their topiary arebeing marketed under theTrademark brand, TopiaryDifferent, and all plants inthe range have been person-ally grown or chosen by MrBurton.

One of his exclusive newtopiary releases isLoropetalum Shirazmatazz, which he describes as havingmagical deep shiraz colouredfoliage all year round.

Mr Burton has trained theplant up a central leader, with the side branchestrimmed to give the plant aslightly tapered look from thetop to the ground.

The second is Citrus LimeCocktail. The delightfullysmall citrus lime fruit onplants which have beenespaliered sideways on aplant trellis, just perfect forthe homeowner who doesn’thave much room for a citrustree, and who loves a gin andtonic with a small tasty sliceof lime.

Many of Mr Burton’s newtopiary range are one to threemetres tall and trained into avariety of symmetrical andabstract shapes.

He sees his new topiaryrange definitely suiting thebigger sized property, andalso the smaller urban sec-tion, where an individualspecimen could be planted asa ‘living sculpture’.

‘‘Put an outdoor spotlighton the specimen and theylook amazing at night in thegarden,’’ he says.

The Burtons have recentlyreturned from an extensivetrip to Europe, visiting manygardens with topiary, justlike the ones in the TopiaryDifferent range.

At this stage the Burtonshave only released a limitednumber of varieties, butmore will continue to comethrough.

Mr Burton thinks his newtopiary will be readilyaccepted by gardeners look-ing for something differentfrom the common topiaryproduct lines currently avail-able in plant retail shops.

Rukuhia HomesteadLandscaping doesn’t have aretail outlet, they can beviewed online or by makingan appointment with Mr Bur-ton.For the seminar series MrBurton spoke on a variety oftopiary topics, including:■ which plants make thebest topiary and the ones toavoid;■ trimming topiary tech-niques;■ matching up the containerto the plant;■ general maintenance oftopiary; and,■ selecting topiary to suitthe style of house and garden.
