TOOL ROOM SHAPERS
• 16 RAM SPEEDS • ALL-HELICAL GEAR DRIVE • SOLID TOP RAM
• HARD CHROME RAM V-WAYS
The current design of N orton-G&E Tool Room and Industrial Shapers represents the culmination of more than 100 years of successful shaper building. The features listed above have been developed arid combined with others that time and experience have proved most advantageous.
The Tool Room machines comprise 14 inch and 16 inch Plain Tool Room Shapers without front table support and guide, and a 16 inch Tool Room Shaper with an extended base and front table support and guide. These are high speed machines built especially for light tool and die and other small work.
N orton-G&E Industrial Shapers are available in sizes ranging from 16 inch to 36 inch stroke. All the machines are regularly equipped with an extension base and front table support and guide. TheseIndustrial Shapers fully meet today's most exacting requirements of speed, accuracy, and compactness, and are especially adapted for heavy tool, die and the larger general work.
A complete line of Universal Shapers equipped with swiveling tables is also available in all sizes from 14 inch to 36 inch stroke.
OLIO TOP RAM
Tlu> rnm of high-strength caAt iron, exceptionally wide and heavily rihhed, iA p;uided ond Rupported wit.bin 55•degree V•ways. Ram guideway in frame is arranged with two gibs cast separate from the framf' t,o insure close-grained iron for th<' wo.ys and io minimize wear. Alip;nment. of ram is obtained and maintained uniformly throughout the ent ire length of guideway by one adjustable gib co11trolled by a series of adjusting screws. C'ircula, tory pressure system continuously lubricn.teR ram guideways. Oil wipers protect bearing surf aces. A sheet-metal safety guard for ram is attached to the rear of frame. A hole is provided in the frame of all Industrial Rhapers so that Jong shafts can be inserted for keywaying. (Not available for Tool Room Shapers.) The 16 inch through 20-24 inch machines have holes 2½ inches in diameter, and 24 inch through 36 inch machines have 3 inch holes.
SHAPER RAM V- WAYS
Ram V-Ways are Hard Chrome on all NortonG&E Tool Room and Industrial Shapers to insure long life and to maintain accuracy. Ram V-Ways are accurately machined and the chrome directly applied by precision plating using special techniques to obtain a uniform thickness of .001 inch from one end to the other. The guideways in the high strength cast iron frame are scraped for proper bearing and lubrication. The hardness of chrome used is Rockwell C70 which is much harder than case-hardened steel, flame-hardened cast iron, or any other material suitable for ways. Chrome has proved ideal for shaper rams because it has a lower coefficient of friction and it eliminates any tendency to scratch, score, discolor or corrode.
LASTING ACCURACY
After many years of experiments, hard chrome was adopted as standard in 1953. Time has proven t hat this exclusive feature provides trouble-free operation under all field conditions. Hard chrome ram V-ways maintain accuracy, resist wear and abrasion. Unretouched photo of chromed ways with gibs removed shows that after 15 years of continuous use, there is no measurable wear of hard chrome ways and scraped surfaces. As is generally known, wear of shaper frame and ram guideways is primarily at the front and back-bell mouth-against which ordinary wedge adjustment has no effect. The hard chrome on N orton-G&E Shaper ram ways practically eliminates the need for adjustment.

TOOL HEAD
The tool head of large proportions is provided with graduations to indicate the angular position throughout 120 degrees.
The tool slide is fitted and guided within V-ways of the swivel head. A tapered wedge maintains the proper fit between the slide and swivel head guide ways.
An adjustable friction dial, non-corrosive and graduated to read in thousandths, facilitates setting t he tool.
The tool slide lock effectively prevents creeping of the tool.
The clapper box is angularly adjustable and is locked in position with a single clamping nut.
TOOL HEAD LOCK
Careful engineering of all components for maximum performance benefits is a marked characteristic of Norton-G&E Shaper design. An example is the Tool Head Lock.
A single control head lock located at the operator's side of the machine clamps the tool in any angularly adjusted position. The illustration at the left shows t hat when the split ring clamp is locked, the entire tool head is secµrely held against the front of the ram, including top and bottom where cutting stresses are concentrated. Arrows indicate large clamping area is throughout 360 degrees, giving a solid anchoring contributing to superior .operating efficiency.
RAM LOCK
All Norton-G&E shapers have Solid Top Rams. The slot has been eliminated, and the ram reinforced and stiffened with a longitudinal rib as well as heavier cross-ribbing to strengthen the entire structure.
The ram lock is adjacent to the ram positioner for convenient· operation.
The new ram lock, operating on the screw-andj amnut principle effectively eliminates any tendency to distort the ram. Cutting forces are transmitted directly by the enlarged positioning screw.
'ISES A Rin~lc>-Rcrcw vis~, ruggedly proportioned of hi~h st.rcn~th rast.-iron , with swivel and locking plate, is furnished as standard equipment with N orlon-G& E ~hapen~. The vise plate is clearly ~radnnted for 180 degrees to facilitate setting. Settings ar<> conveniently made.
A douhle-scrcw vise is optional al no extra cost.
The slnndard-Hinp;le-screw vises are offset with the jaws projecting beyond one side of the work table.
MOLDMAKER'S VISE l\,J old makers' vises of high strength cast-iron can be supplied at extra cost.

CRANK PLATE, LEVER, and LINKAGE
The crank plate, of high-strength cast iron, has the double crank gears bolted thereto.
rank pin, drop-forged steel, is adjustably mounted and guided within crank plate. A bronze bush, pressed on the pin, forms the bearing within a hardened block.
Lever arm of high-strength cast iron is fulcrumed and supported in frame with link connection to the ram.
Crank block, large in proportions, is of hardened steel and accurately ground. Lever is scraped to fit block. There is no wedge because wear in this area is not uniform and a wedge is useless, besides· being a separate loose piece to contend with. Flood lubrication and selected materials for the lever, block and pivot pins assure Jong lasting maintenance of fit.
This construction of the crank mechanism, together with the selection and combination of materials, was adopted after many years of experience with crank motions.
DOUBLE-CRANK- GEAR TRANSMISSION
Two crank gears provide maximum distribution of wear and minimum velocity. This feature successfully used for over fifty years. The gears are of alloy cast iron with high-strength and wearresisting qualities.

SINGLE-CAM FEED MECHANISM The cross feed to table is intermittently actuated by a single cam and accurately synchronized with return stroke of ram. Eighteen feed changes are available and may be selected and set by moving the feed selector within a 90-degree arc. A direct reading feed dial indicates amount of feed. A special fine-feed range is available for Industrial Shapers at extra charge. A directional feed control, common to both feed and t raverse, is located at rail and indicates direction of feed.

MECHAN ICAL CLUTCH
An adjustable non-corrosive friction dial provided for hand feed, is graduated to read in thousandths. Stroke length is quickly set with stroke-adjusting shaft and automatically locked. Direct-reading stroke dial shows length of stroke set.
SELECTIVE TRANSMISSION The built-in selective transmission gears of single helical type, are of alloy steel, heat-treated, and slidable on multiple-spline shafts. Timken bearings absorb the thrust so that the shifter mechanism is free of thrust and wear. The intermediate gears are of alloy cast iron with high-strength and wearresisting qualities. The two driving pinions are alloy steel, heat-treated.
16 SPEEDS, ALL HELICAL GEAR DRIVE A selection of 16 ram speeds arranged in geometric progression provides an exceptionally wide range of cutting speeds for all classes of shaper work.
Speeds are quickly and easily selected by only two controls located convenient to the operator.
The double crank gears and selective transmission gears are all of the single-helical type with tooth form designed to attain maximum tooth contact and smooth action.
MOTOR DRIVE The motor is mounted on a bracket bolted to the base, and connected directly to machine by multiple V-belts, completely enclosed in a demountable metal guard. Motor can be readily adjusted for belt tension.
MECHANICAL CLUTCH and BRAKE Simple and rugged design facilitates set up and provides a sensitive manual control of ram speed attractive to operators. A single handle actuates both the clutch and brake to instantly or gradually start and stop.
Constant-speed motors of 1800 rpm, ac or de, are recommended. See specifications for required hp.
Electrical equipment complies with Machine Tool Electrical Standards and, when necessary, with Joint Industry Conference Standards.
ELECTRIC CLUTCH and BRAKE An electric clutch and brake with single fingertip control provide convenient, instant, and positive starting and stopping. This feature is available as optional equipment.

CROSSRAIL, RAIL CLAMP,
WORK TABLE, and SLIDE
The work table construction provides an unusually wide slide arranged with a single narrow guide in the rail. Static load tests show 50 per cent less deflection than conventional designs under similar conditions.
Alignment of work table is uniformly maintained throughout t he entire length of guideway by a single adjustable gib and tapered wedge.
Table front support is standard on all shapers except the 14" and 16" Plain T ool Room. An adjustable stress block provides a positive lock t hat WI LL NOT DISTURB alignment of table.
A handwheel can be furnished in place of the standard hand crank used for positioning the table horizontally. Projections have been eliminated to insure safety for t he operator. The handwheel, available at extra cost, is quickly and easily engaged or disengaged.
Vertical travel of crossrail is controlled by narrow guide on frame to prevent "bureau-drawing." Clamping of crossrail to frame is solid metal-to-metal without distortion.
The cross slide is rigidly bolted to table and provides 60 per cent greater bearing for t he compressive weight of t he work than conventional overhang design. Tensile stresses are taken by steel bolts. H orizontal movement is controlled by a narrow single guide like a keyway and avoids tendency to cock as in other designs wit h wide guide.
CIRCULATORY PRESSURE
LUBRICATION
When main motor starts, a circulatory pressure system automatically and continuously supplies oil to ram guideways, linkage system, and to all bearings, including main crank-gear bearing. Cascade lubrication is provided for entire transmission.
Ram ways are continuously lubricated from four pressure lines terminating at reservoirs located at four corners of ram guideways. Lever guideway for crank block and oscillating pivot bearings for linkage system are lubricated directly from the pump. The entire crossrail unit is automatically lubricated from the circulatory pressure system.
The lubricant reservoir is contained within the base of the machine. A dip stick indicates proper oil level. The oil pressure gage furnished with red warning area indicates when to change element of cartridge type filter.
A flexible chip shield between front frame guideways protects the lubrication system and internal mechanism from chips.
ATTACHMENTS FOR SHAPERS OWER DOWNFEED to TOOL HEAD
The powrr <lownfeed which automatically feeds tool downward on the rctum stroke of ram is si rnple and effective in operation. Eight feed changes from .0025" to .020" for Tool Room RhnperR and from .004" to .032" for Industrial Rhnper~ are indicated by a direct-read:,1g dial nnd are obtained by i-et.ting the feed selector within a small arc.
A ram, adjustably Recured to the frame, actuates lhc feed . A safety is provided should t he opern1,ing lever override the cam. A,1 adjustable nut., in c·onjunction with a safety clutch, provides a posit.ive stop for any predetermined drpth of cut. The safety cl utch also indicates low limit of vert.ical feed travel.
Th<' powC'r downfced attachment reduces vertical t ravel of 1 hC' tool slide J ¾" on Tool Room Shapers, and l" oo Industrial Shnpers.
AUTOMATIC TOOL LIFTER The automatic tool lifter is especially effective for finishing and when using cemented carbide tools. As its designation indicates, it automatically lifts the cutting tool clear of the work on the return stroke and positively seats the tool in its cutting position on the forward stroke.
The tool lifter is self adjusting for normal angular and vertical positions. The tool can be lifted by hand without affecting its operation . When not required, t he tool lifter can be quickly disconnected.
TABLE FRONT HAND FEED This item of auxiliary equipment has been developed to simplify operation of Norton-G&E Shapers, when shaping irregular surfaces.
When both cross and vertical feeds are required to shape irregular surfaces, the front hand cross-feed control offers the most natural dualfeeding posit ion and the clearest vision of the work. This front feed control is available independently of the regular hand feed at the rail, and can be applied to both the box and universal tables.
For maximum production of contour work see Hydraulic Follower Mechanism (Page 12).

'OR SHAPERS
A complete line of Universal Shapers from J 4 inch to 36 inch stroke is available to serve the requirements of small tool room, miscellaneous, and heavy die work.
These Universal Shapers are developing and satisfying a. constantly expanding field of shaper work. Convenience of controls and sturdiness of structure particularly adapt this type of machine to economically shape a wide range of variable flat and compound angular surfaces.
The Universal shapers embody the same compactness of construction and concentration of controls that are available in the Tool Room and Industrial Shapers equipped with box tables.
UNIVERSAL TABLE
The Universal Shapers have tables with two working surfaces, one solid for shaping flat and plain angular work, and the other a tilting work surface used in combination for compound angular work.
The main trunnion is extremely large in proportions, and is integral with work slide. This work slide, combined with the cross rail construction reduces table deflection 50 per cent.
Controls for rotating and tilting the work surfaces are operated from the front of table.
The work table is rotatably adjustable 360 degrees. A large dial plate, graduated in degrees, indicates the angular setting.
Table front support with guide and positive lock is furnished on all machines except Plain Tool Room _Shapers.
The tilting work surface is angularly adjustable 15 degrees in each direction in the plane of the table axis. Graduations in degrees indicate angular setting. A solid semi-cylindrical seat within table permits metal-to-metal clamping of tilting work surface without deflecting table.
The entire semi-cylindrical seat for the tilting work surface is guarded to prevent ingress of chips and dirt.
T-slots in tilting work surface are always above chip guards when set at maximum angles.

TWO MACHINES IN ONE
A N orton-G&E shaper equipped with a hydraulic follower attachment is two machines in one. It is a conventional shaper with all of its advantages as a versatile utility and production machine, and it also offers the opportunity to automatize and to simplify a wide range of machining operations at low cost.
A shaper with a tracer attachment increases productivity by automatically duplicating intricate forms. It offers a method for reducing costs and performs without the services of a 'highly\ skilled operator making human effort and diligence less important. Parts are finished at speeds beyond human capacity with accuracies that in many instances eliminate hand finishing.
The components comprising the hydraulic tracer attachment are incorporated into the general design of the shaper to gain the utmost of the accuracy the follower attachment affords, and at the same
t ime to preserve the advantages of the conventional machine. The simple turning of a valve converts the shaper from tracing to conventional operation.
The hydr~ulic follower attachment units include a hydraulic power unit with pump, motor, oil reservoir, and relief valves; hydraulic and electrical controls; tracer mounting bracket; compound slide and tracing valve; adjustable template mounting bracket; hoses and fittings and rise and fall control hydraulic cylinder mounted in special base.
The follower attachment can be applied to all size shapers arranged with either box table or a universal table. The universal table can be employed to an advantage by angularly adjusting the table to level off a severe rise or fall on the template.
The amount of controlled rise or fall motion of the table is variable, dependent on the cylinder furnished to meet requirements. Consult us for recommendations and specifications.
