What is an intranet manager?

‘“If you are about to begin your first intranet project, you need to gather together people

of diverse skills: computer geeks, artists, diplomats, and negotiators …if you will be successful” That is as true today as it was

perceptive in 1996.’

Martin White, Intranet Focus, quoting David Strom from a 1996 Forbes article in http://www.intranetfocus.com/archives/2686

What is an intranet manager?

“the intranet manager role boasts a broad skill base and the intranet team an

impressive set of competencies including governance, stakeholder management,

content, technology, training, user experience (UX) and adoption.”

Elizabeth Marsh, ‘‘Becoming a digital workplace leader: the big shift from intranet management’http://digitalworkplacegroup.com/resources/download-reports/becoming-a-digital-workplace-leader

What is the context for the

role?

Things keep changing

Passive• Flat HTML sites• Information to be

consumed

Interactive• Multimedia• Advent of user

generated content• Web 2.0

Collaborative• social media • collaboration

tools • digital workplace

First external, then internal

The future of intranets?

“Don’t think of intranet in the middle of your digital workplace…think of how to enable the

flow between people and content”

The future of intranets is “Intelligent assistance”

Sam Marshall, Clearbox Consulting, from ‘If work was so great we’d do it for free’ https://www.slideshare.net/slideshow/embed_code/key/KTNy7PYJxDiYc7

See also article by David Lavenda http://www.cmswire.com/digital-workplace/the-future-of-work-will-look-a-lot-like-todays-customer-experience/ which references virtual assistants as part of the digital workplace.

“As digital workplace practice matures, it can be expected that momentum will build, with intranet roles and teams changing in scope accordingly.”Elizabeth Marsh, ‘‘Becoming a digital workplace leader: the big shift from intranet management’http://digitalworkplacegroup.com/resources/download-reports/becoming-a-digital-workplace-leader

Reality check?

It’s not going to be easy to get there.

It’s a ‘long game’

But it’s an opportunity
