Dear Students & Parents, The transition from middle school to high school involves many things such as learning the layout of a new school, getting to know new teachers, tougher academic requirements, opportunities for athletics and extra-curriculars, more personal responsibility and freedom, and exposure to greater social opportunities. It is common for many students and their parents feel a mix of emotions about the transition to high school.
The journey to high school begins today as we begin to consider what Central High School has to offer. Over the next few weeks, we will embark on this journey by investigating what programs are offered at CHS, selecting courses for a class schedule for Grade 9, Freshmen Orientation on May 20th at CHS at 7:00pm, and getting together at a “Back to School” night program for both students and their parents in August. At any point throughout this journey, please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns (sthompson@scsd.k12.pa.us or 224-3052). During the Summer months, Mr. Carlson, CHS School Counselor, will officially take over the Class of 2018 and at that time, should questions or concerns arise, please contact him at gcarlson@scsd.k12.pa.us or 793-5320. Throughout this packet, you will find helpful information about CHS and the courses that 9th graders can schedule. On the next page you will find a few ideas to consider to make the high school experience a successful one. Together, we can make the transition to CHS a rewarding one and pave the way for academic, social, and career success! Sincerely,
Stephanie L. Thompson Stephanie L. Thompson, M.Ed. SCMS School Counselor

Make a Great First Impression!
How to develop a positive relationship with your teachers at the beginning of the year:
Come to class on time & prepared Turn in all work on time Exhibit positive behaviors & respect Ask appropriate questions
Be a strong self-advocate:
Don’t be afraid to ask your teachers questions or express concerns before or after class just not during instruction time.
Email them questions Ask for help when you need it or do not understand something Introduce yourself to your counselor, principal, and other school staff
Meeting new people:
Introduce yourself to people who sit around you in your classes Sit with different people at lunch rather than the same crowd every day Get involved in clubs Take courses that will also require involvement after school: band, chorus….. Take part in community service projects Take on leadership roles in clubs, student council, class officer positions, etc.
Handling Social Pressure:
Find friends with similar values and beliefs Be assertive – tell friends what you want/don’t want out of the relationship Make good decisions – drug and alcohol free is the way to be! Learn to handle conflict in a positive way Talk with a trusted adult about situations that make you uncomfortable (bullying, relationship
issues, etc.)
How Parents/Guardians can assist:

Central High School Nurse’s Office Theresa Martin, RN – School Nurse
My Goal as the nurse at Central High School is to support and educate students with health concerns while minimizing lost class time. Nurse’s Office Hours: Nurse’s Office hours are Monday-Friday 7:35 – 3:05. Feel free to call me at 793-5334 or email tmartin@scsd.k12.pa.us with questions or concerns. Students must have a pass to visit the nurse. The office is closed 6th period for lunch. Health Concerns: If your child has asthma, seizure disorder, migraines, diabetes, reaction to bee stings, or any food or other allergies, please contact me. If I have the information about a student’s health condition, then I am better able to care for the student and reduce the number of days of school and classes that are missed. Medications – STUDENTS ARE NOT PERMITTED TO CARRY ANY MEDICATIONS INCLUDING TYLENOL, IBUPROFEN, MIDOL, OR COLD MEDICATONS. Carrying any medication except cough drops is a violation of the medication policy and will be handed with disciplinary action. This policy is in place for the safety of all students. Please do not give your son/daughter any medication to “put in his/her pocket or purse.” Doctor’s orders can be obtained for students who need to take medication at school and the medication will be kept in the health office and administered by the nurse. The form is available on the district website and can be faxed to my office at 793-5335. COLD AND FLU SEASON Students should not come to school with a fever of 100 degrees or above, uncontrollable cough, or if he/she has been vomiting through the night. The nurse at the high school has orders for Tylenol for minor aches and pains. There are no other medications provided by the school district. Please help your child prepare for the day, if he/she has a cold, by giving them medication before they come to school. Consult with your doctor regarding what is best for your child. Many times a student will come to school with cold symptoms and congestion and then suffers with this the entire day. EMERGENCY CONTACT INFORMATION Please keep contact information updated. Many times cell phone numbers and places of employment change. Contact the attendance secretary if there are changes. If there is an emergency, we want to be able to contact parents immediately. Email addresses are very much appreciated also. Thank you and I look forward to meeting your child and assisting them with their health concerns as needed. Theresa Martin RN BSN CSN
