• The Apartheid: A system of racial segregation that was enforced by South Africa’s racist government during the 1940s-1990s

• Separated people into 4 racial groups—black South Africans forced to live in places that lacked good resources

• Created separate buildings, schools, and other public areas• Arrested and imprisoned millions of people for not following

the laws

Coloreds

• Multiracial: A person who represents more than one race

• In South Africa, some whites and blacks married each other and had mixed kids

• Multiracial kids in South Africa were called “colored”—they weren’t discriminated as much as people who were 100% black, but they still were

Nelson Mandela

• Nelson Mandela: A South African anti-apartheid leader who became the first black president of South Africa

• Was imprisoned for 27 years for his role in the African National Congress

• Was eventually released and elected president when Apartheid ended and blacks were given the right to vote

African National Congress

• African National Congress (ANC): The leading anti-Apartheid group that fought for equal rights for blacks

• Led by Nelson Mandela• Many ANC leaders were arrested and imprisoned during

Apartheid• Eventually became a political party during the 1990s
