It is important to know that there aren’t right or wrong answers in this session but the aim is for the students to discuss and debate what it means to be free or to have that freedom limited by others, one’s own decisions or circumstances beyond one’s control.

Manyofthemworkonshipsbecausetheyneedtofeedtheirfamiliesorpayfortheirchildrentogotoschoolandwhiletheyareatseatheymisstheirfamiliesalot.

Problemswhichthechaplainsfaceinclude:notbeingabletoprovideeverythingtheywouldliketoprovidebecausetheydon’thaveenoughmoney,nothavingenoughtimetospendwithallthecrewsofalltheofships,beingtired…Whentheshipshavearrived,sometimesnotbeingwelcomedbypeopleontheship,notknowingwhattosaytotheseafarersornotunderstandingthelanguagesverywell.

Thechaplainsknowthattheyarenotaloneintheworkthattheydo.Jesussaidthat‘wheretwoorthreemeetinmyname,Iamthereamongthem’(Matthew18:20)andsothechaplainscanbecertainthatGodissupportingthemastheyservetheseafarers.
