Time to Support PGES

Think and Share

Let’s say a new teacher’s

management skills result in a loss of instructional time. To solve the

problem you ask him/her to observe a teacher highly effective in this area.

What would you expect this new teacher to see and hear?

Think, Share, List

Visualize the master teacher and their classroom observed.

Share the behaviors you and the new teacher will see and hear.

As a group list the most significant behaviors.

For Your Consideration

What can we learn as administrators about creating time for supporting teaching/learning from the “teaching” behaviors we listed?

Time to facilitate effective teaching and

professional growth is a result as well as a

support of leadership and the productivity of the

culture.

COMMIT

Commitment saves time by clearly focusing the work on what’s most important. People get done what

really matters to you.

What matters most to you? How do people know?

COLLABORATE

We often talk about delegation as a time management skill. While this may be true, it often implies pushing off less

important tasks to create time for yourself. Collaboration means engaging

every member of the organization in getting what matters done. Time is truly saved when we work together to achieve

the goals of the school.

How do you collaborate?

COORDINATE

Just as a great teacher coordinates activities to save time, we save time when we organize our work and the work of others in ways that increase

productivity.

How do you organize to make the most of not only your time but the

time of others.

COMBINE

Highly effective teachers and principals make connections to help to reduce the disjointedness of work that wastes time. They also think

about ways that one action or communication can reinforce

related goals or ideas.

How do you use combining accomplish several things at once?

COMMUNICATE

Lacking and/or ineffective communication wastes huge

amounts of time.

How do you make sure your communications are clear, concise

and focused on the real work of your school?
