NEW DELHI, May 6:There is a proposal to offer

e-tourist visas to Chinesenationals but no final decisionhas been taken as yet, theGovernment said today.

“There is such a proposal butno final decision has been takenas yet,” Minister of State forHome Affairs Kiren Rijiju toldthe Rajya Sabha while respond-ing to a question by KahkashanPerween (JD-U).

Responding to questions bymembers, Rijiju said the visaregime was non-reciprocal andthe main purpose was toenhance the number of visitors.

When the Minister wasasked by a member whether any

intelligence report relating to theproposal, Rijiju said normallysuch information is not dis-cussed in public domain.

He said that China was amongthe prior reference category coun-tries where, apart from businessvisitors and tourists, otherChinese nationals require permis-sion from the Union HomeMinistry.

Congress leader AnandSharma said that as per a circularissued for Visa-On-Arrival, 72hours before the person has totravel, he or she has to file it elec-tronically and must have the con-firmation before boarding a flight.

He said there were instanceswhere either the airlines haverefused to accept that and thereare instances when upon arrivalpeople have been turned back.Recently, an eminent Indian’sgrandson who came fromAustralia with this Visa-On-Arrival facility was detained atthe airport for 10 hours and puton a flight back, Sharma said.

The Minister admitted therewere instances where due tomisunderstanding of the wholesubject, such incidents did occurand it is not Visa-On-Arrival perse, it is electronic Visa whichneeds to be cleared before heboards the aircraft.(PTI)
