As many of you know, I started Thos. Moser Cabinetmakers in
1972 in response to an insistent calling to use my hands to
make furniture in wood. Along with my wife Mary and my four
sons, we built what now comprises a family of craftsmen some
70 strong, all united by a single commitment: to make things in
wood better than just about anyone else on the planet. This
year, on the occasion of a second papal visit to the U.S., this
time in Philadelphia, our Harpswell chair has been chosen
once again for His Holiness, so it seems we may be gaining on
our ambition.
The manifestation of our commitment to excellence is our
signature on every piece of furniture. Mine was the first, and
you will meet others throughout these pages whose signatures
you may even find on your pieces. It is indeed our craftsmen,
with his or her own signature, who hold the honor to testify to
each piece’s worthiness of 1) the gift of the natural materials
chosen, 2) the sensitive and disciplined eye of its designer, and
3) the practiced hands and countless heartbeats given to its
making. The right to deny a signature, should any piece fall
short, is as much the craftsman’s responsibility as it is to
confirm the highest standards met on behalf of the entire
family.
As we continue our evolution to enrich the lives of our
community, and to be evermore relevant, we must collaborate
with others to innovate in design, in material, in application.
We must push to make our pieces ever better; pieces to which
nothing can be added, and nothing taken away. We hope you
will see the depth of our commitment in these pages.
A FAMILY

NEW IN SHOWROOMS FALL 2015
At Thos. Moser, I consider the design process an
exercise in assigning form to a philosophy or an
established set of ideals. The furniture then is
grounded by those ideals while satisfying the
imperatives of function, comfort and delight.
My challenge is to create objects that are
respectful of wood as a precious resource,
communicative of our capabilities in craft through
thoughtful detailing, and whose existence is
evidence of our talented craftsmen’s unwavering
commitment to quality.
With Hartford, my intention was to continue
evolving the Moser aesthetic while remaining
faithful to the ideals that Tom Moser himself
established in the beginning.
As a follow up to my last collection, Cumberland,
the town where I live, Hartford takes its name
from the town of Warren Shaw. Warren is my
partner in the prototyping of new products and a
man without whom these ideas would remain just
that.

SPECIAL EDITION: CUMBERLAND DINING CHAIR WITH RUSH SEAT
When designing Cumberland last year, I considered including a rush seat but
opted at that time to wait. One year later, and with time to reflect, I came back
to the rush seat. I feel it deepens the connection of this piece to the traditions
and history of furniture making while serving as a visual commentary on our
commitment to balancing tradition with an ever evolving aesthetic.
As a form of seating hundreds of years old, rush seats are comfortable and
durable with an average lifespan of 20 to 30 years. Strands of rush are woven
into rope-like lengths in a closely spaced manner around a wooden seat frame
to create strong, lightweight and slightly flexible seating. Several different
types of fibers can be used to make a rush seat such as cattails, bull rushes,
seagrass and the fiber rush employed here.
We are proud to partner with Maine artisan Bernard Zike to offer this special
edition handmade seat for the Cumberland Dining Chair.

Reference to traditional furniture forms has long been a
practice of Thos. Moser, including Tom Moser’s Continuous
Arm Chair ™, a reference to traditional Windsor forms.
Here, the vehicle is the ladder back, a form made popular
by and typically associated with the Shakers of the 18th
and 19th centuries. Given the strong compatibility of ideals,
Tom’s early work was influenced and inspired by Shaker
furniture. My design philosophy, and that embodied by
Shaker work, is also highly compatible, and the ladder
back seemed like the right vehicle for me to express my
aesthetic perspective, through the lens of our ideals at
Thos. Moser, combining hi tech computerized machining
with lo tech hand tooling in service of uncompromising
quality.
Named after the Hancock Shaker Village, this chair offers
a contemporary take on a historic furniture form.

BY BENJAMIN KLEBBA FOR THOS. MOSER
I grew up in Michigan, the son of a craftsman who built the house I grew up in,
the furniture within it, and wooden sailboats our family would take out on Lake
Huron. I swept the floor of my dad’s shop and sanded many boards, making
Adirondack chairs to sell in the summer to make extra cash.
I now live in Portland, Oregon and own Phloem Studio, where my father and I
and a small team make contemporary furniture. I’m covered in sawdust most
days. We keep our furniture simple, with an emphasis on traditional joinery
and natural materials.
I was honored to design a chair for Thos. Moser. Tom’s spindle back chairs
were an inspiration. I wanted to make a side chair or café chair that was strong
but minimal, inspired by Danish modernism and Shaker simplicity, with
exposed joinery and turned and tapered limbs. I named the chair Portland,
after the place I call home and the other, older Portland I was happy to visit in
Maine.

BY BRIAN KANE FOR THOS. MOSER
Cooper (n): a person who makes or repairs wooden casks or barrels
To Cooper (v): to work as a cooper; to work at or do coopering
First known use: 14th century
The centuries old art of barrel making, using the technique of manipulating
staves or individual pieces of steam-bent wood, is the inspiration for
Thos. Moser’s Cooper Chair. Designed by Brian Kane, the name Cooper is
reminiscent of Brian’s longstanding connection to Napa, his second home.
Perhaps the fruits of this valley, contained in the barrels themselves,
have something to do with Brian’s interesting and innovative approach to
coopering.
