Web of Science - searchSearching for: “CCR5 inhibitor” and human in the Web of Science will retrieve 39 records where the terms occur in the title, abstract or keywords

10

All Database – Search

The same search in the All Database search will retrieve 64 records an additional 25 results.

However, 16 of the additional 25 are actually in the Web of Science but can only be located because of specialized indexing in the other resources

11

All Database – additional results

e.g. this record from the Web of Science only contains one of the terms, and could not be found by searching the Web of Science on its own

12

All Database – additional results

This record was located because of the additional indexing available in BIOSIS Previews

APPLIED USES OF THE CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM

Search for: - “embryonic stem cell” 7,746 results

There is a huge amount of research on Stem Cells, but if you are only interested in the legal implications of Stem Cell research you could:

Refine by: - Government & Law = 171 results

18

Applied uses of the classification system

In this example the MeSH term “Government Regulation” was mapped to the category “Government & Law”The original Web of Science journal categories for the journal Stem Cells are: Cell Biology, Hematology, Biotechnology & Applied Microbiology and Oncology

ISI WEB OF KNOWLEDGE – ADDITIONAL RESOURCES

Conference Proceedings Citation Index Derwent Innovations Index

• Proceedings literature is an essential component of international scholarly communication.

• New theories, solutions, and indications of emerging and developing concepts are typically presented first within papers delivered at scientific and scholarly meetings and conferences.

• Particularly benefits researchers in the following fields: Engineering, Computer Science, Physical Sciences where some crucial research is not covered in journals

Conference Proceedings Citation Index

Conference Proceedings Citation Index

• The CPCI files are fully integrated into Web of Science• > 130,000 conference covered• 12,000 conference per year• Coverage since 1990

• Countries in Central & Eastern Europe which stated subscribing CPCI in 2008/09:– Bulgaria– Czech Republic– Slovakia– Romania

Conference proceedings are now available as two additional indexes in the Web of Science

This content is fully integrated allowing a researcher to link from a conference proceeding to the journal literature it cites.

Times Cited counts in Web of Science now include citations from both journals and conference proceedings.

The number in parentheses represents citations only from Web of Science journals.

The Conference Proceedings Citation Index can add significant content to Web of Science in particular fields.

Derwent Innovations Index

– 16.3 million inventions accounting for over 33 million patents

– Coverage of 41 world patent-issuing authorities

– Coverage depth back to 1966, updated weekly

– Over 1.5 million patent documents added each year

– Provides both general key-term and cited patent searching

– Detailed classification systems

– IPC, Derwent Class Codes, Derwent Manual Codes

– Drawings, application & Publication history etc

– Citations

Regional Expansion

AUTHOR ADDRESS ENHANCEMENTS

In Addition to Full Author Names - author names and addresses are now linked in the same way as the original document

FUNDING ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Web of Science records now contain funding acknowledgement data from August 2008 forward

Search for finding information by Funding Agency or Grant Number

Example: Use Analyze Results to determine which institutions have received the most NIH funding

Embedded in the Web of Science record

The funding acknowledgements are embedded in the Web of Science full records, so you can take advantage of all the features of the Web of Science

REGIONAL JOURNAL EXPANSION

• Since late 2007, Thomson Reuters has implemented a new policy regarding the coverage of Regional Journals.

• A Regional Journal is one that is focused on a specific geographic region, they are often covering the regions aspects of a particular field such as Economy, Law, Climate or Clinical Medicine

• We have NOT relaxed our selection criteria in any way but we are now recognizing that these journals may not be well cited because of their regional context, but are still of value for our customers.

REGIONAL COVERAGE

• 1,500 journals added from non Western Europe / NA countries

• Currently 23 journals from Slovenia (up from 5 in 2004)

• Current coverage in the region:– Croatia = 53– Austria = 41– Serbia = 15– Czech Republic = 52– Slovakia = 26– Italy = 169

ResearcherID

ResearcherID – For Researchers, Students, Librarians and Administrators

A Global Community Where Researchers ConnectIndividual identification touches all aspects of scholarship. ResearcherID is a tool for individuals, departments, institutions, governments, funding agencies, societies, and publishers.

Include Joint Affiliation and Past Institution Information

Create multiple publication lists (including citation metrics)

There are three ways to add publications to ResearcherID:

-Search the ISI Web of Knowledge

- Adding files stored in EndNote Web and EndNote Desktop

-Uploading an RIS (tagged) file.

Our resources are based on the Web of Science, the gold standard for research evaluation used by universities and governments around the world. The Web of Science is the best resource available because it has:

o Authoritative and trustworthy contento Consistent, 25+ years of archive and a well understood collectiono Multidisciplinary, with no emphasis on any subject area

Thomson Reuters presents not just citation and record counts, but meaning behind the numbers. Global averages and percentiles enable our customers to benchmark and make comparisons and ultimately make the right decisions.

Research Analytics: Source and Foundation

CHALLENGES OF RESEARCH EVALUATION USING CITATION METRICS

• Citation behavior is very different for different disciplines– Life Sciences = many articles, highly cited, quickly tail off– Mathematics = low citations, continue to be cited for many years

How can I account for these differences?

• Older material is cited more, so how can I account for the different ages of publications that I wish to compare?– How can I better compare the performance of a researcher with a long

publication history to a researcher with a short publication history?

• Citation distribution is very uneven– Only a small number of publications are highly cited– Most publications have little or no citations

45

Thomson Reuters generates metrics for each and every document in the dataset. This provides context and meaning to the citation counts of each paper.

Total citation counts, mean and median citations, 2nd generation total citation counts and mean 2nd

generation citation counts

Mean Actual / Expected Citation Ratio.

Mean Percentil e

We generate summary metrics based on totals and averages of all the articles in the dataset

InCites: Citation Report

Summary MetricsCitation Frequency Graphics

A number of graphics provide at-a-glance summary information on the collective Citation Frequency of the source articles dataset.

Metrics associated with most of the displayed graphics are built around baselines, enabling an immediate gauge of comparative positive/negative citation performance.

InCites: Citation Report

InCites: Citation Report

The reports are interactive. Click on the various data points will generate a new

report based on that entity

InCites: Citation Report

This is a useful tool for making direct comparisons of entities such as 2 individual authors. The normalized data and multiple indicators make for a comprehensive and accurate evaluation. The graphical summaries provide

instant understanding

InCites: Citation Report

The Institutional Ranking is a useful tool for evaluating the performance of collaborations. In this case we are looking at data from the National

Research Council of Canada, and we can see performance metrics around collaborating institutions and identify if they are contributing or

detracting from your research performance. By providing a suite of metrics around each entity it provides a more comprehensive and

accurate view

Are these collaborators contributing to our performance?

We can make direct comparisons at a glance
